I have been living in Shanghai since 2018, and didn't go back to my contry during the COVID. And I can say that China is safer than my country....I usually come late from my lab at 4am or even 5am. I Think the country is safe because of many reasons, the most significant one is the widespread of CCTV cameras.

It's not just the cameras it's the law enforcement. In China the police are quick in action and good at damage control. And they won't let a criminal walk free three days after arrest.

In European and American countries, a large number of cameras are also installed. For example, some stores in the United States install cameras to protect their own safety, but even if they capture the front face of the robber and submit it to the police, the case cannot be solved. The UK has the highest number of cameras per capita, but it still cannot solve the problem of street robbery. The main reason for China's security is that its law enforcement agencies are conscientiously fulfilling their responsibility to protect citizens, and the government has invested a large amount of funds in social security issues.
Nice job Aiden👍👍. Between 2006 and 2019 I spent a total of, give and take, 2 years in Shanghai comming and going, living on the Puxi side former French concession and working on the Pudong side. I have spent many a late nights / early mornings walking home from bars and clubs, never ever have I experienced any kind of problem, not even heard of problems or incidents from colleagues, foreign or chinese. Rather I know of colleagues who, when they were not in the best of state, were helped by strangers (chinese) who made sure that they got back to their hotel .... wallet intact and mobile in pocket when they woke up in their hotelbed, not really knowing how they got there. So Shanghai was safe already before all the CCTVs were up. It is not so much the cameras, it is more a system and mentality thing that makes Shanghai and most of China safe I suppose.
Personally, I feel safer in the city because of that fundamental "strength in numbers" idea. If there's always neighbors and community members walking around day or night, its much harder to commit crimes in public. But any place will be a hotbed of unrest if it does not take care of people with housing, healthcare and making sure they can have a good job

Some foreign visitors planned extended stay maybe asked to have facial pictures registered at local police, and then recognized in the entire country. Yes, police is watching and it was said no dead corner anywhere. Safety at night for women was a unplanned benefit.

Yes, being a tourist or new in China is super inconvenient now because of the digital payment. It would be fine if it was like normal digital payment like Apple / google / Samsung pay but Alipay and wechat pay are very restrictive and require a lot more to get going.
Really? I had a super easy time connecting my American bank account to my Alipay and WeChat. Every payment went through so smoothly the entire month I was in China. I love Alipay in particular. I found it very user friendly and loved not having to carry cash around.
Alipay doesn't work everywhere and some places require CN bank account linked. Wechat is OK if you first sign up, but if you don't use it for a while, something goes wrong with the account, someone tries to hack your account etc they will ban your sim forever, no options to get the account back. Have to get a new sim, do a new sign up etc. Super inconvenient. People always say that cash is accepted everywhere but it isn't the reality. Plenty of places will at the least say no change if you use cash, and at the worst just refuse.

Jakarta Indonesia consider safe for Travelers, but care must be taken of pick pocket (not just in Indonesia, pick pocket is every where in the world for the past few years now 😀). So stay safe and enjoy the trips.
I think from experience, HongKong actually got more creepy old men than Mainland China.... on my last trip to HK, I noticed the local old men love scanning women from head to toe.... but guys in Europe/US aren't like that.... they do stare but with a smile/nod!! much more natural....

There are some LGBT Chinese video bloggers on UA-cam, they are from mainland China. China is a traditional place, the state media or public media do not report on LGBT groups, most of them keep a low profile, they have their own clubs or social places, especially in big cities. Schools are not allowed to teach LGBT values. However, there are LGBT celebrities, TV hosts, etc. in China. Most LGBT celebrities will focus on their careers and will not perform LGBT shows in public places such as TV or theaters.

I just came back from Southern China and love China trip. Great work and huge improvement but long way to go in terms of civility. The people are nice and need to learn more on the art of Living. These are the things that I think needs some major improvement in China and they are: 1. No need to use speaker in every store to draw customers. It turn them off. 2. Public Washroom - There are some clean public washroom even in subway stations but generally dirty and smell urine. Some cleaners are not doing their jobs and need increase the Hygiene standard 10 folds. The people using the bathroom are also contributing to the mess in the toilets. Not a bad idea to propose paying a small fee to Toilet if guarantee cleanliness...just like in Germany. Washroom is much cleaner. 3. Many Men 40+ years old spit publicly and 99.9% of women don't spit. Major improvement compare to 25 years ago. When the Chinese men about to spit, they make a huge clear throat clack belt level 10 noise Publicly. They don't feel anything is wrong.... OMG. Very disgusting. In many of conversation among foreigners that have visited China, they think that spitting is a part of Chinese culture and clearly it is not. No foreigners will ever criticize or give a constructive criticism on this uncivilized behavior. I'll tell you why....As long as this uncivilized behavior and manners are still around in Chinse society, don't ever think about equality with the western values and cultures. All I am saying is.... If you go to 3rd world country, you don't see people spiting loudly. Only in China. At the end of the day, what is the difference between a smelly Body Odor from Indian and Chinese spit loudly publicly? no difference. 4. The China government on the provincial have been doing an amazing job on building the new pavement sidewalk for pedestrian and ebike. The cleaning crews on the street are diligent and are doing a good job in Southern cities in China. However, the citizens are ruining it. Many still litter. I understand there are a lot of village people migrated to the cities and they tried to make a living. I get that. Often time these illegal peddlers parking their old cards on the pedestrian sidewalk or e-bike lane. What made it worst is that the E-Scoters are invading the pedestrian sidewalk and now the pedestrian and e-bike are sharing the same lane. The new pedestrian sidewalk pavement cracks all over the place. It is true no one got hit by the e-bike. All I am saying is.....China can promote Tourism but this campaign will not going to be successful. Safety issues for pedestrian is poor. The tourists have to put their faith in the foreign land and counting strangers don't hit their children and love ones. This is truly unacceptable. Where is the Police? Missing in Action and no where to be found.
I am an American Ex-Pat, that is currently living in Guangxi province. The biggest problem that I see are the pedestrians and many people that are driving E-bikes. There seems to be very little sense of self preservation! There doesn't seem to be any concern whether it is clear or safe for a pedestrian to step off a curb to cross an E-bike path. In fact, most of the pedestrians will not even bother to look in either direction before the start to cross. It happened to me one day, that while I was driving, an elderly man stepped off the curb when I was just 5 or 6 meters from him. I did every thing I could to stop in time. I just managed to stop about .5 meters before I would have hit him. He turned to me and said "You almost hit me!" Never did he think it would have been his fault for not looking before he crossed. And no matter what the circumstances were...it would have been my fault.

You never feel relax walking at sidewalk. Walking on the pedestrian sidewalk and sharing with e-bike reminds me a bilateral agreement between China and other nations. It stated........mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation.

In the US even in small areas not big cities I wouldn’t really walk around at 10 pm without being with someone or in a group.

You can still pay with cash almost everywhere in China. When you register with Alipay, only your passport ID is requested.

I went to China this May. It's super easy and extremely convenient.

People spit in public places in some developing countries. I won't name these countries but I have seen them doing it.
