    I on a whim bought the battery and installed it. All I got was the motor spinning. Watched your video and exposed the starter and gears. blew out the dirt. Hit it with some WD40 pressed the blue button and golly gee the engine cranked. Watching the video was helpful in knowing to remove the gas tank for better exposure. Thanks for the help. $18 from Amazon and I got electric start mower. Course it always starts with just one slight pull of the cord but hey.

    Good, you put the patch on the "inside" of the catcher material - that's the side with air-pressure and grass-weight pressing on it?? Outside patches have a greater tendency to get blown or knocked off. In my view, patches are best when they have rounded edges, not corners <= small surface areas of corners have a tendency of lifting-off? Brant should have either sniped-off non-bonded corners or added more glue & again waited for setup.

    You had oil contaminated by fuel - as shown at the beginning of your video, this would make the oil thinner and more likely to splash out the crankcase vent. Changing the oil is likely the real repair here- and the oil burning was caused initially by the bad seat and needle in the old carburetor. Thanks for sharing your repair.

    I think I have solved this one. John Deere have replaced the Briggs and Stratton needle and seat from the B&S original. The JD one is white plastic, the B&S one is brass. They may have a different material for the tip. What happens, I think, is that the JD substitute is too light, so it is more prone to sticking closed. I discovered with numerous stoppages that all I had to do was loosen the float bowl and reattach, and this would clear the problem for a while. Order a replacement needle direct from Briggs and Stratton, not JD or their dealers. That will ensure you get the brass one. I have never had a repeat of the problem since I installed the brass needle. Either the JD substitute has too sticky a tip, or is too light, or both. And the B&S needle is cheaper! And that's for the thorough analysis, which I followed to isolate the problem!

    Bad fuel shut off valve sticking closed and or needle valve sticking closed because of fuels. Best to install inline fuel shutoff valve right after the tank if mounted high on mower. Turn off fuel allow mower to run out of gas. Turn on fuel before starting again and that should resolve the problem. As long as you keep the fuel from sitting in the carb and bowl.

    Mine does it every winter. The first year I took the carb apart and with the float and needle valve out of it I tried to blow through it and it was plugged solid. I took a piece of wire and poked it through the hole where the needle valve goes and didn't see much, but tried to blow again on the inlet and it was open. Ran all summer. Next year same thing. I looked closer the second time and found that there was a little bit of varnish from the gas going bad over the winter. Now I just plan on cleaning it every year and no problems.

    Great fix. I have one of these engines that is really hard to pull start, and it almost feels like it wants to yank the rope out of your hands, like it has a sheared key or off time. If I do a quick torquey pull, it always starts first time, but I cant figure out why its so hard to pull with an engine so small. These are ideal for seniors, but they cant pull fast and hard enough so I haven't put it up for sale.. Ive already went through it twice, checking the key and valve clearance...everything seems great! Maybe this little guy has a compressions release and I possibly have adjusted it on the hump? Ill upload a video of it if your up for giving it a look?

    • @brantsmallenginerepairs

    The problem with the little gray one is you need it on a level area to start with. You need to clean off all the crummy grass with a wire wheel too. If not you are wasting your time. The bearings are a good idea but with the grass on it you are starting with a very unbalanced blade to start with. I like my balancer because you can take the 90 degree rod and check for bent blades too. I took four magnets off because off the width of the blades. I do all kinds of blades. Get the excess grass of and you won't hear and vibration or noise. Blades now are stamped out so fast that if that blade move on little bit during stamping its trash. Grab a brand new blade and put it on the balancer and see.

    At about 5:57 you talk about tying the handle down to get the right tension. I don't get it. The cable itself moves inside the housing. How does that do anything?

    • @brantsmallenginerepairs
      @brantsmallenginerepairs Місяць тому

      You want max tension on the cable in one direction and max tension on the sheathing in the other direction. If you don't do this the handle will not have the appropriate amount of movement to engage the drive system properly. If you wish, mess around with this and you'll see what I mean. Cheers

    I’ve got a Toro Personal Pacer mower with the 6.75 hp B&S engine. The electric start will spin the motor but not quite fast enought to start it. It has a new 12V 7.2AH battery, fully charged, new float this year, new magneto a year ago, and valves adjusted to spec. I can spin the engine by rotating the blade by hand and with a compression tester installed, it's reading 0 psi which makes sense if the compression release mechanism is working properly. You can give it one tug on the pull start it will fire up and run perfectly. I've got an old Sears battery charger (2, 10 & 50 amp) with small connectors that I can fit on the battery. At the 10 amp setting, it's just enough extra juice to spin the motor a bit faster and start it. Today, I pulled the electric starter and added a bit of oil on the bearings. I can spin it by hand and there's very little resistance. Reinstalled and it made no difference. I'm strumped.

    • @brantsmallenginerepairs
      @brantsmallenginerepairs Місяць тому

      Couple of thoughts. Your compression tester must be bad if it's reading 0 but the engine will run. With a compression release, you should still read probably 40-80psi. Use a multimeter to check the voltage of your battery. It should be higher than 13V. If not then fully charge it. Make sure all connections are tight and there is no corrosion. Make sure the connections are not reversed. Is it the proper battery for the mower? Not only does it have to be 12V, it has to have the proper Amperage. Too low and it will not spin fast enough. Hope you figure it out. Cheers

    Nice work. I just did mine but ended up putting a new carb on it. Had to pull the whole engine off to get at everything. Given the amount of work I opted for a new carb. Dont ever remember it running so good.

    my wife rolled my craftsman riding mower yesterday. thankfully she is ok, but the mower rolled carb side down. by the time i got there, oil was coming out of the air filter. I righted the machine and pulled it to my shop. I plan to clean the carb and air filter and top off the oil before trying to start it. Anything else I should do before trying to crank it?

      I think if you let the oil settle and do the items you stated, you should be OK. Machine might smoke a bit at first but it should clear up. Glad everyone is OK

    Blade holder projections that fit in the blade completely worn down. So blade only being held in place by center nut. The key in the blade holder is intact. Flywheel key also intact. So my neighbor is looking for a new blade holder and blade. Air filter a mess along with oil and fuel line. And he keeps hitting rocks.

      Definitely replace the blade adapter if it is only held on by the bolt. Sounds like a project!

    So that's why the blade is very loose and motor won't start?

    • @brantsmallenginerepairs

      Sheared flywheel keys are caused by the blade hitting something big and causing a sudden storage. If the blade is loose and won't start, yes check your flywheel key. Cheers

    Any ideas on an old toro gts5? Self propel stopped working altogether. Paid the only place in my town $150 to "fix" it. Now the self propel works for the first like 5-10 feet and then stops again.

      I would start with making sure it is the correct belt and that the belt is in good condition. Also, you might be able to adjust the drive cable to increase the tension on the belt. Sounds like belt slippage.

    I have an old lawnmower and it’s 38 years old and the piston rings are rubbish because I have the oil at the right level and all this white smoke coming out and there is only a little bit of oil left when I’m done the lawn

      Might be time for an upgrade. Unless you're using the smoke to keep the bugs away. :)
