  • In today's video, I work on a Cub Cadet push mower that's running slowly, sputtering and blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. Watch me diagnose, and fix this mower with $0 in parts.

Great fix. I have one of these engines that is really hard to pull start, and it almost feels like it wants to yank the rope out of your hands, like it has a sheared key or off time. If I do a quick torquey pull, it always starts first time, but I cant figure out why its so hard to pull with an engine so small. These are ideal for seniors, but they cant pull fast and hard enough so I haven't put it up for sale.. Ive already went through it twice, checking the key and valve clearance...everything seems great! Maybe this little guy has a compressions release and I possibly have adjusted it on the hump? Ill upload a video of it if your up for giving it a look?

I don't hear of it happening often with push mowers, but it is possible the compression release is not working on your machine.
