Modding the Drop Sense75

This is the drop sense75. It is my first 75% keyboard. It is an aluminum chassis, gasket mounted, south-facing keyboard with customizable plate, weight, and knob options.
I chose the nightfall edition which comes with white on black DCX keycaps and holy panda X switches. As for the extras, I chose to get a carbon fiber plate and brass weight.
After trying the keyboard out in it’s stock form for a week or so, I also decided to swap out their stabilizers for Durok v2 stabilizers in clear. The phantom stabilizers were fine, but I prefer screw in stabilizers that have a slightly higher tolerances, to reduce wobble.
Taking apart this keyboard was extremely simple. With just some screws on the bottom, the Chassis was apart, and the keyboard assembly was entirely removed. The first thing I did was replace the weight in the bottom of the case with the much heavier brass weight.
After taking off the keycaps and pulling the switches, I was able to unscrew the plate from the PCB and start rebuilding the keyboard.
I started with the stabilizers by removing the old ones, and replacing them with freshly lubed and assembled Durok v2 stabilizers. After that I thought that it would be best to press the switches in while mounted in the chassis, which ended up being a mistake. If you are using the Carbin Fibre plate I definitely would suggest to mount the switches while the keyboard is out of the chassis, as the gasket mounting and flexibility of the carbon plate kept many of my F-keys from mounting correctly, damaging the pins. It took me a little while to straiten them back out and mount them. Sadly, I don’t have the video of me putting on the included tape mod, as my SSD ran out of space, but I used the included tape mod. Having it perfectly cut out for you and easy to apply is a really nice feature.
There is a tiny bit of case ping, but it’s not distracting enough for me to care. I really like what drop has done with this keyboard. Allowing for barebones kits, modular components and added extras, like the switch foam option that is now available, is really great for customization and repairability. However, people that buy keyboards like this generally have more than one keyboard, so including an option for a case even at an extra cost would be a great addition.
Hopefully, The next video I post is going to be a Nintendo and alien themed novelkeys NK87, as the first game I ever played was Jim Power: lost dimension in 3D on the Super Nintendo. Due to a missing resistor on the PCB I had to take it in to get repaired, but I am really excited to show you guys it when it’s done.
If you guys liked this video, please hit that sub button, show me some love, and I’ll see you guys in the next one.

man, why did you have to speed up through the opening of the case :( There's no other video showing how to open this keyboard, and i dont wanna damage it idk if you'll read this since this is a 3 year old video, but could you answer these questions: 1. Do i have to take the switches out to open it, or can i just leave them? (im not lubing them this time) 2. Do the rubber feet become unusable, or can they be put back without issue, and would i have to use some sort of adhesive for them? 3.-im gonna use the same foam as in this video you mentioned needing to cut it in strips since it bulges, but i dont see why it would bulge as 1 piece and not as strips 4. Would the tape mod be bad for the board? you didn't do it in the video this keyboard is my favorite and i just dont wanna fuck it up :(

    • @ireakhavok

Okay so to answer all your questions. 1) I believe you need to take off at least the keycpas, not all the switches. There are some screws hidden on the plate if I remember right. You can just leave the plate and the switches and PCB as one unit. 2)No I didn't need any extra adhesive. One did fall off after a year, but I put it right back. 3) so there are little ridges that can cause the PCB to flex and put pressure on the sockets. Technically you can do it with one piece and just crush the cells of foam in that area - The point of it is that you just want to take up the empty space of the case 4) I personally don't like the tape mod unless it was a purpose built sheet like in the case of the DROP Sense75. This board was great quality. I do suggest modding the board, it sounded way better.

The other I would suggest for you to look at is the Novelkeys NK87. Ultimately, get any of the three of those, and you're killing it. I do also know the KBD8X works through the KVM and the NK87 does not. So keep that in mind, that some PCB's don't talk nice through KVM's

NOTHING is fully waterproof, if they say it is then they are lying. Need a video of dropping it in the toilet then flush it and see if it works after, thats why its meant to be waterproof really, because a lot of people drop smartphones in the bog... :)

I owned a samsung a few years ago and loved it. Great phones for sure, but I do have to say that I don't believe that Google is advertising them as waterproof, even if they meet the standards. I use mine to check my email in the shower pretty much every morning, so I'd agree that it is 100% waterproof. Maybe the issue was that it was dropped into a toilet bowl at the same time? Feel sorry for your buddy, but I haven't had a problem with mine. I love my phone. I hope that he had insurance!!!

I did buy the HyperX Pudding Black keycaps. The letters are barely visible. Your keycaps are very bright in the video. Also on the black Razer keycaps the lightning on the letters is terable on this keyboard. Is this because of the color of the keycaps? I need BIG FET BRIGHT letters.

    • @ireakhavok
      @ireakhavok 10 місяців тому

so, yes. The Black keycaps will absorb instead of reflect the light, like the white keycaps. I would definitely suggest getting the white pudding keycaps if you need some bright letters. you could also look up some switches like the Durock Blue Lotus that use a form of fibre optics to "pipe" the light to the keycap.

@@fvheel so for your keyboard, which is North facing, the window will be at the back, by the legends. The keyswitch is rotated 180 degrees. some other boards will use south facing sockets, which puts the light at the front. I'm assuming that you have the Mountain Everest, yes?

What was the point of downloading the via app at all? I was following along but you didn't really do anything with the app. You just downloaded a firmware from the via website and loaded it into GMK Toolbox. The metal guide rods that hold the modules or the two halves together are extremely sturdy. You can easily pick up the board without it flexing when it's together. I feel like the build quality could only be surpassed by a metal frame. As for a plastic case it's one of the best plastic cases in regards to quality that I've seen. @ireakhavok Рік тому

So they just updated to Agent 2.0, which was literally extremely easy to upgrade the firmware, just a FYI. But this is still one area that it could improve. The layers are the only thing that control the RGB, currently, except for brightness. you can adjust the brightness of alpha's separately from other keys, then you can also adjust the brightness of the LED that displays the type of layout. Not much! I don't mind that much, but he did say some years ago that he would be implementing more control over it. I do not know when, so this may be something we can bring up in either his monthly blogs or directly reach out to them and ask, to see if it's on the roadmap.

Honestly he is just catching up on production as of a month or two ago, and he is always very vocal on any updates he is working on, and to my knowledge he is not making current updates to it. If he does eventually make updates to it, it would be minor and you could update your case or build with the new components. There were some big changes to the V2 of the build, and I honestly don't see new changes coming any time soon. You can also reach out to him directly or on his website and he could address any of your concerns personally. I am VERY happy with this keyboard. If I were you, I wouldn't wait. but if there is something that you really want to see, reach out and let him know, now would be the time to do so.
