Fossil Bluff (featuring the Table Cape Lighthouse walk)
Fossil Bluff is located a few minutes drive from the township of Wynyard in Tasmania's NW Coast. Some remarkable species have been unearthed here from microscopic plankton to an extinct whale. In this video we walked for probably about 500 meters towards Table Cape. We were actually looking for some circular depressions which once formed the foundations of temporary shelters made by the Tommeginer people, however we were unable to locate them. Nevertheless, the area features some unique scenery and is worth a look but you'll need to come at low tide and be aware that you can get marooned here if you don't time your walk well!
From Fossil Bluff, it's a short drive to the top of Table Cape which features a great look out with extensive views over the NW Coast and has a short walk from the lookout to Table Cape Lighthouse. The best time to visit Table Cape is in October while the Tulip Festival is on to see the vibrant colours of the tulips in bloom.

The Tarkine Drive
Переглядів 40221 день тому
A great day out in the Tarkine wilderness in NW Tasmania. The Tarkine Drive is located just south of Edith Creek and takes around 2 hours to complete, driving through mostly dense rain forest. You can easily fill in a whole day or two exploring this area so give yourself time to enjoy the sights. In this trip we visit Lake Chisholm, the Milkshake Hills and Wes Beckett Falls. Lake Chisholm is on...
Waratah Treasures

A search for one of Tasmania's hidden beauties in Guildford, near Waratah in North West Tasmania. Our main objective on this trip was to find Twyford Creek Falls, a lovely, photogenic waterfall that isn't generally listed on any maps. Our guide for the day, Michael Hyland, had a bit of an idea where they might be and also showed us some of the other places around Guildford before we headed into...
Anniversary Bay (featuring Lee Archer Cave and Wet Cave).

During a brief window of calm in the midst of some wild weather, Dad and I visit the Rocky Cape National Park / Tangdimmaa to see Anniversary Bay and the nearby caves. Being my old childhood stomping ground, I am very fond of this area and always look forward to wandering around the hills of this somewhat overlooked national park in Tasmania's North West Coast. The walk we did in this video sta...
Tamar Island

Dawn till dusk at the Tamar Island Wetlands on a particularly cold winter's day. The Tamar Island Wetlands walk is located on the West Tamar Highway about 20 minutes from Launceston's CBD. The walk out to the island is flat, wheelchair-friendly and will take around 30 minutes each way. There are toilets and a BBQ on the island, making it a great place for families and is also popular with jogge...
The Balfour Track

A wintery walk through the Tarkine rain forest in NW Tasmania. On this trip we did the Tarkine Drive which is a loop road (C218) starting near Edith Creek. Trowutta Arch is quite other-worldly and well worth a visit. The walk takes around 15 minutes each way and is pretty easy. Other highlights are the Milkshake Hills walk, Beckett Falls (currently closed in 2024) and Sumac Lookout. The entire ...

Philosopher Falls

A day of waterfall sight-seeing and fungi hunting in the Waratah region, NW Tasmania. Philosopher Falls is named after James "Philosopher" Smith who is credited with discovering tin at Waratah which led to the beginning of Tasmania's mining boom. It is located a few kilometers west of Waratah. The track is well maintained, clearly marked and takes around 30-45 minutes each way. Despite a steep ...

A great couple of days spent on the Tarkine / takanya coastline in North West Tasmania exploring the wild splendour that the area offers. On day 1 we visited Arthur River, Lady Kathleen Beach and Couta Rocks, camping the night at Camp Elsewhere at Temma. There are a number of campsites in the area which come with a small fee ($6 for where we stayed) that can be paid at the Parks and Wildlife of...
Mount Arthur

An early Autumn walk to the summit of Mt Arthur in NE Tasmania. Mt Arthur (1,188m) is located near Lilydale, about 30 minutes north of Launceston. On this occasion I went with my brother-in-law Harry and his son Otto who, for a treat on his 10th birthday, was given the day off school to come mountain climbing. I had done this walk about twenty years ago and thought I had a rough idea of what to...
Ringtail Falls Circuit (featuring Waratah)

A day out in the unique Tasmanian town of Waratah. Now with a population of around 250 people, Waratah was once the central hub for the nearby Mt Bischoff tin mine which was at one point the richest tin mine in the Southern Hemisphere and evidence of that mining history still abounds throughout the town. Apart from that, it's just an interesting place to visit with Waratah Falls in the middle o...
The Sphinx Bluff Track

A steep climb in the summer heat to the South Eastern section of the Ben Lomond National Park. The Sphinx Bluff Track (also known as the Bent Bluff track) is found on Rossarden Road about half a kilometer past Craggy Peaks cabins. The first section is on an old 4WD track which eventually narrows into a bush track. The track is relatively easy to navigate with plenty of ribbons and cairns showin...
Mother Cummings Head (via Cummings Cliff Track)

A fantastic day walking to the summit of Mother Cummings Head via a little-known short cut. The Cummings Cliff Track is accessed from Scotts Road (turn off from Meander Falls Road - you will need a 4WD vehicle). The tracks starts where the road ends, a little way past the lookout. We weren't sure what to expect with this track as there was very little information and it doesn't seem to be that ...
The Kelly Basin Track (featuring Queenstown and Nelson Falls)

A lovely (if not a bit wet and cold) couple of days spent in Tassie's rugged West Coast. The Kelly Basin track (also known at the Bird River track) is accessed by following Mt Jukes Road from Queenstown and then turning off onto Kelly Basin Road. The last 5km is very narrow and not reccomended for 2WD drive cars. From the carpark at Bird River Bridge, it's a roughly 7km walk to the site of Pill...
The Castra Circuit

A great day out in Nietta, Northern Tasmania, at the Castra Circuit. One of Tasmania's lesser known short walks, the Castra Circuit is found on Gaunts Road, Nietta. It is a 3km circuit (not 4 as I incorrectly said in the video) that features a number of waterfalls and some very impressive native forest. There's no car park, just pull over onto the side of the road when you see a sign. Starting ...
