  • An early Autumn walk to the summit of Mt Arthur in NE Tasmania. Mt Arthur (1,188m) is located near Lilydale, about 30 minutes north of Launceston.
On this occasion I went with my brother-in-law Harry and his son Otto who, for a treat on his 10th birthday, was given the day off school to come mountain climbing. I had done this walk about twenty years ago and thought I had a rough idea of what to expect and I must admit I didn't do a lot of research before tackling this one (or any at all for that matter) so consequently none of us really knew where we were going. I was surprised to find that the track was quite a bit further than I remembered and was also overgrown in places which led to us losing the track after Livingstone's Cabin. We did find it eventually and we made our way to the summit, albiet taking quite a lot longer than the estimated time of 4-5 hours.
The track is just over 8km from start to finish and is found along Mountain Rd (about 1km after the road turns noticeably rougher). Keep an eye to the right as you go up, it is easy to miss. From there the track climbs steeply for around 2 hours, starting in an attractive, mossy forest before eventually plateauing out into rockier terrain with more prickly low-lying scrub. For this reason, it's not recommended that you wear shorts (like we all did), otherwise your legs will get pretty scratched up. Stay on the lookout for markers, they are not always easy to spot.
