  • The Quaile Falls track is located near Cradle Mountain and takes in two main waterfalls, the picturesque Upper Quaile Falls and Quaile Falls which is one of the highest in Tasmania.
To locate the track turn off Cradle Mountain Road onto Dove River Road. There is no sign post so it would be best to do your research so you know exactly where the turn off is - plus it's not really suitable for 2WD vehicles. Follow this road for approximately 2km until you reach a junction and then turn left. About another 100 meters on, you should spot a sign on a tree marking the start of the track.
I believe the area is private property although there are no sign posts and it appears to be open to the public.
The track itself is an old logging trail and the walk to Upper Quaile Falls is mostly flat and easy to navigate apart from a few logs to climb over. A plaque on a tree indicates the turn off to the Upper Quaile Falls which is located nearby. While not that high, these falls are very photogenic and a worthy destination in their own right.
The walk from here to the main falls descends down through myrtle forest for about 20 minutes until you reach the top of the falls where you can peer down to the forest 90 metres below or enjoy the views to Dove River Canyon. To get a photo of the falls you will need to make your way to the base. On the day of making this video, I would have been going there on my own and apparently it's a bit dicey and the track is easy to lose so that didn't seem like such a good idea!
This was shot in late January after a fairly dry patch. You can expect larger flows during the wetter months although this might make the walk to the base quite difficult.
