  • Mount Claude (1036m) is located in the Cethana region in Northern Tasmania. To get to the summit, first locate the service road at the Round Mt Lookout on Olivers Road and follow the signs. There is a locked boom gate so you will need to walk the steep road for about 1km until you reach the communications towers. There are nice views to be had along the way of the Cradle Mt Lake St Clair National Park and the surrounding areas.
Continue to follow the walking track until the impressive stone face of Mount Claude looms ahead. The turn off to the summit is not sign posted so you'll need to keep an eye out but it's located just before the track winds it's way north of Mt Claude and on to Mt Vandyke. Once you locate the turn off, follow the pink ribbons and cairns. I believe there are two ways to reach the summit, one being a standard rock climb, the other being via a small cave. Neither route is particularly clear so I would recommend doing some research.

To get to the other end of the cave you will need to pull yourself up on the supplied rope. However, there are few, if any, footholds so this requires some degree of fitness as you'll be relying mostly on arm strength. There is an alternative tunnel off to the side if you don't mind a tight squeeze.
Once out of the cave, it's a short climb to the summit with great views of Mt Roland, the Great Western Tiers and the Cradle Mt Lake St Clair National Park.
This is a reasonably challenging walk requiring a good fitness level and is probably suited more to the adventurous bush walker looking for something a bit different to the usual rock climbing experience.
