The Castra Circuit

A great day out in Nietta, Northern Tasmania, at the Castra Circuit.
One of Tasmania's lesser known short walks, the Castra Circuit is found on Gaunts Road, Nietta. It is a 3km circuit (not 4 as I incorrectly said in the video) that features a number of waterfalls and some very impressive native forest. There's no car park, just pull over onto the side of the road when you see a sign. Starting from Silver Falls, the track follows Nietta Creek gradually downhill through some beautiful native forest. Where Nietta Creek meets Castra Rivuluet, the circuit track turns right (continuing on the Nietta Creek track will take to you "Secret Place" which looks nice but not featured in this video). The "bridge" is just a few planks of wood at the time of writing this so during heavy rains you could expect to get wet feet although the day we went, it wasn't too hard to get across.
From here, cross the river and walk a short way up a side track to see Castra Cascades. The track then leaves Castra Rivulet and heads upward over a ridge. There are some massive trees here that are worth checking out. Eventually you will get to the turn off to Castra Falls which is a very steep and quite slippery side track. A rope is provided but someone with mobility issues might want to give this one a miss - although it's well worth the effort if you can muster the energy. Step Falls is a little further on and definitely one of the highlights.
The track ends about 20 metres down the road from where you start. Overall Dad and I managed to find our way around without too much trouble despite the track being fairly rough. I wasn't really sure what I was getting Dad into so I was pleasantly relieved that the track wasn't too difficult and we had a really great day. Give yourself 3 hours to make the most of it and add another hour if you want to visit Secret Place.

Putting the Leven canyon up front makes its magnificence a bit hard to beat, but those were some really cute waterfalls on a well-rounded circuit.

Yeah there's some huge trees up on that ridge and that was the biggest burl I've ever seen.
