AudioThing Type A Vintage Enhancer // Walkthrough, Demo, Review (AUv3, VST3, VST2, AAX, CLAP)
Type A just became available for iOS. Links for purchasing the app as well as for supporting my work, can be found below. Here is my affiliate link to buy on Plugin Boutique, this costs you nothing to use, but helps me, thank you for the support. The price is currently only $29 there, which is substantially cheaper than on the AudioThing website:
www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Effects/42-Enhancer/3968-Type-A?a_aid=65c7016dea38b
This video is a walkthrough of Type A by AudioThing, a vintage enhancer based on the famous ‘Dolby A Trick’ used to add presence and air to recordings. Note that at the time of writing I have giveaways on my Patreon for copies of this for iOS, as well as for almost any AudioThing desktop app. You can join at www.patreon.com/Gavinski - there’s also a free tier where I occasionally post stuff, anyone can join that, but the paid tiers are where the real party is - you get so much in return for your support.
If you are ever buying desktop plugins available on Plugin Boutique, not just this one, it would be fantastic if you use my link, it costs you nothing, but I get a little kickback, thank you so much! If you regularly buy apps there, perhaps bookmark this link in your browser, every little bit helps:
🟧 My General Plugin Boutique Link:
www.pluginboutique.com/?a_aid=65c7016dea38b
I made this video on an iPad, inside the host app AUM. This is a great host to run your other iOS music production apps inside, and you can watch my walkthrough on it here: ua-cam.com/video/lHMFYZy-VP0/v-deo.html
Type A iOS version link:

I make next to nothing from UA-cam (it works out at around £2.50 at the moment per 1000 views - yes, it is brutally low, and views are tiny in this small iOS music niche). If you are a dev, asking if I am interested in doing a sponsored video is a good way to ensure I can keep doing this work for the long term, and if you are a dev or a viewer, Patreon & Buy Me a Coffee are good ways to help me keep this channel going. Links below.
I have giveaways, exclusive vids, preset packs, samples, field recordings, AUM sessions, etc., on my Patreon. The top Patreon tier even has lots of desktop plugin giveaways. You can get a warm glow from supporting me while getting nice things in return. Everyone who’s a member there thinks it is wonderful and that joining is a no-brainer.
🟡 Check it out at patreon.com/Gavinski
One-off donations are also very gratefully received. Donations and Patreon memberships are really the only chance I have of getting compensated fairly for my work here, so I really appreciate donations. You can also book one to one consultations with me on Buy Me A Coffee:

AudioThing SR-88 Memory Rhythm Drum Machine // Now on iOS! // Walkthrough & Review
Thats fkkin beautiful, man An overall calming sensation with a chaotic energy of the arp and a sprinkling of dissonance with some of the echos piling together (maybe some additional audio mangling via delay on top? Trying to disect too many things at once xD) lightly wrinkling the smooth flow Fascinating Greatful for the vid!
StepPolyArp is really powerful. Great sounds
Thanks man! Yes, SPA is great, a lot of thought put into it, it's one of the greats among iOS music apps for sure
@GavinskisTutorials I always learned in NYC if you need to get buzzed into a Spa then it most likely is run by some of twitter followers. hahah. I hope all is well my friend. My social media hiatus has been magical for my creative output. Hope to come back strong this fall with some heavy madness for the world!!!
@IwatoHyena great to hear! Looking forward to a catchup
Sounds nice. I specially like the sound of ridgewalk but read it was quite buggy, have you run into any issues?
I ran into tons of issues when I first got it. I my opinion the app was very badly beta tested. It's much better now but I have still had the occasional crash. I think recent problems have been related to a knob in the traversal section. Overall, it's reasonably stable now and I don't think you'd regret getting it.
@@GavinskisTutorials I see, I’m glad the dev was responsive, maybe he could do testflight betas with the community, plenty of people are up to testing new toys and reporting bugs.
@mpfmax0 yes - I think the test flight group must have been too small
I really like the off kilter but pleasing granular music box vibes of this demo, and I hope you enjoy it too. I have a 25-minute long spoken video on my Patreon which explains the workflow in this video, and recommends other apps that could be used for similar results if you don’t have the apps used here: 🟪 www.patreon.com/posts/my-latest-demo-110457466 This Patreon post contains the AUM session file used here: 🟪 www.patreon.com/posts/aum-session-for-110458613 Note that if you don’t want to subscribe to my Patreon, the vid and the AUM session are both available separately on my Patreon store as one-off purchases. Nice one! This hasn't really made it into regular use for me, maybe I should revisit it though.
Just a little short. 😉 I could dive in for longer. 🤿🧜♂️🐠
Yes definitely!
This is so good. It reminds me that I want to start setting up experimentation sessions for AUM juat so I can experiment and not think I have to make a "song" out of everything.
Oh definitely, I love the freedom of short-form doodles.
Sounds a bit like coffee percolating at the end ☕️
Lol
Great job on your Shorts mate. They are meditative, short, and memorable. Cheers!
Thnx!

Just got PaulXStretch and cannot find anything on how to use it. Went to Google and it sent me to your site but the comments have been turned off so no way to see your detailed instructions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Currently 14.99.
Not too shabby at that price
Lovely stuff. Oscillators, pitch shifters and loopers. ❤
Thanks Roland!
Frequency shifter btw - not pitch shifter!

Spectral Frequency-Shifting Drone Music made on iPad. You can check out my vid on 20+ great apps for making drone music on iPad / iPhone here: ua-cam.com/video/vQpwoFBhHo8/v-deo.html Be aware that although the JAX Frequency Shifter used in this demo sounds really great, it makes a clicking noise when you pass the mid-way mark on the Frequency dial. I find that problematic, ymmv! Made inside #AUM
Thanks, G 😊 I watched this video when I first got Riffer a few years ago… hadn’t played with it for a while and needed a refresher to get going again. Checked UA-cam and there you were, ready to help me out once again. Much appreciated 😎
♥ Thank you for the kind words
Such a nice and creative sequencer 👌🏻 and so sad to see that it seems to have not “survived” the developer’s Life Like Rules 😕 As even your relatively simple, but spot on usability improvements weren’t implemented and also his other apps seem to be quite behind on updates, I was wondering if you know if he’s still actively developing? 🤷🏼♂️
Hi Maik! He is still developing, yes, I think so, though his last app came out about 2 years ago, 'Phonolyth Cascade'. Not sure he'll make more apps, fingers crossed, but I expect he'll maintain the ones he brought out already. Hope so anyway
“REIMAGINING” 🌌🪐
If you're on iOS and like reimagined traditional fx, check out my vid on Ringotron if you haven't - best reworking of a well established fx, in this case ring mod, I've come across in years!
What is it about GSDSP's modulation?!
Ha, it's just so damn powerful. Thank god they have the great presets to show them off too, though, as it is hard to master so many modulation possibilities
I was looking for this solution!!! Thanks a lot! 🙏🙏🙏
My pleasure!
What daw are you using? It looks so elegant.
It is fantastic yes! This is the host app called AUM. Dev's name is Kymatica / J. Liljedahl. I have a walkthrough vid on it here on my channel, "Almost Everything You Need to Know About AUM" . It has no piano roll, I use a 3rd party one where necessary, like Atom2.
I’ve been enjoying the Pianoteq demo on my desktop the last few days. I think I’m gonna have to spring for it before this sale ends on the 15th. Then comes the hard part… which instruments to pick.
That’s extremely hard yes. I don’t think there are any easy choices, depends on your own taste, and different ones will be right for different moods and pieces. I found that I really love this Steingräber. For a felt piano the Grotrian is one of my faves. Some of the free pianos and harpsichords are beautiful too btw. I love the Hohner collection, especially the clavinet and pianet. Also the kalimba. And the harps. Need I go on, loool. At least the demo is incredibly generous.
Good demo bro.
I dig this! Sweet run through as always my man. Always appreciate the work you put in 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks man, and thanks for your Patreon support!
@@GavinskisTutorials No worries at all. Glad i can support in some kind of way for all the vids you do for the ios music community.
has Igor made any improvements you mentioned?
Not sure, been too long since I made this, can't remember exactly what I suggested now. I got into Bestcutter for a while after making this, I learned to 'tame it', but overall I found it far too much work for the results, have barely touched it since
@@GavinskisTutorials thanks for your detailed reply
Super interested in the circuit design of a lot of these old school “enhancers” in general - maximizers, stuff like the unit this app models (apparently extremely well, much to the chagrin of my impulse control.)
Haha, yeah, there hasn't been that much interest in this particular release, but when you hear how good it sounds, you get interested!
Looks like another killer “secret sauce” type app. Audiothing killing it as always 🔥
Literally couldn't have given less of a damn about this when I went to check it out, lol, but it is indeed great, great secret sauce, and I reckon I'll be using it on all kinds of things!
@@GavinskisTutorials same here, it’s up there with Spatializer, Woot, ReAmp, and Bark Filter for adding a little of that special sauce to a track.
@HotStrange absolutely. I'd add Medusa to that list too!
Sounds really great
It really does. Thnx for the comment Pia
Luv your tutorials
Thnx!
Thanks Gavin! Even though I don’t use vocals much, this app is definitely worth it to me. It gives me that “presence” I’m so often looking for with instruments.
Great to see you here Cara. Oh, this is good on all kinds of things - check the little demo I put on twitter and Insta an hour ago, yes, really enjoying this, it's much more magical than I expected!
Great presentation as always, Gavinski. Just a quick question though: my own personal takeaway from this demo is that I'm struggling to understand what this app would do that others apps that provide EQ and compression don't already do, without the need for me to buy yet another plugin. If I understand this thing correctly, it's basically a hybrid compressor/EQ. If that's correct, then why couldn't I achieve comparable effects just from lining up, say, Fabfilters Pro-C and Pro-Q on the channel strip? In asking this question, I don't mean to sound like a cynic or naysayer or anything like that, but it seems to me that devs keep releasing newly repackaged versions of things that already exist in spades, so unless the new thing offers some "secret sauce" that's not available elsewhere, then it's hard to feel compelled to buy - even if the iOS version is cheap. Was wondering if you have any thoughts on all that? Thanks, cheers from Canada
Hi Frank, I totally get you and I had the same first thoughts. I played around with a bunch of compressors and eqs earlier, some enhancers etc and couldn't get anything wet up that sounded quite as good as this. Mind you, I am more the creative type when it comes to all this stuff, and not really any kind of mixing / mastering specialist. But looking at the reviews on gearspace, ppl are genuinely raving about this. Do you have desktop? If so maybe try the demo? Really a pity ios demos are not standard, I think it's ridiculous and cruel, tbh, that people are expected to buy stuff without demos
thanks for the run through mate. v nice 🙌
Cheers man, good to see you here!
I especially like how it sounded on the vocals. I'll have to grab this one while it's on sale. Thank you for the great demo!
Cheers Cory, been playing around with this more since making the video, and really liking what it does to loads of different things. Really seems to be one of those 'secret sauce' plugins
Thats a cool app i like it. Killer tutorial too. Excellant
Thnx Mirek!
If I don’t win it I’ll definitely buy it
Genuinely a great sound
Knocked it out of the park Gav thanks
Thnx Dr!
This is based on mods of the Dolby Type A machine from 1965, which were used as enhancers, and were a vital part of the secret sauce on John Lennon’s vocals! My 8-minute spoken walkthrough with background info and lots of demos is here: ua-cam.com/video/STd8cgMkNjU/v-deo.html I have giveaways for 4 copies of this for iOS as well as a copy of almost any AudioThing plugin on my Patreon: www.patreon.com/Gavinski As I don’t have many paying followers, only 30+, and fewer than half usually enter such giveaways, chances of winning on Patreon are very high. If you are a fan of my channel, I would be so grateful if you could support me there, starting from only $5 per month. If buying this or any desktop plugin available on Plugin Boutique, please use my link: www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Effects/42-Enhancer/3968-Type-A?a_aid=65c7016dea38b This costs you nothing, but I get a small commission, and this is currently actually cheaper on Plugin Boutique than on AudioThing’s site! These kinds of support are truly vital, people, as I earn only around £2.50 per 1000 views from UA-cam, despite having been doing this 4+ years and being one of the most respected channels in the space. Thanks for reading and for your support, whatever forms it takes 🙏 Gav
Gosh, it still amazes me what you can do in software, and what you can do on an iPad in software, for such a low price. Very impressive. Thx Gav.
Thanks for taking the time to comment Greg, hope you’re well brother!
