Woodwork Project: Christmas Gift Box - Hand Tools Only
This video shows how I built a simple wooden gift box using hand tools only.
The materials are very cheap and only a handful of tools are required. The joints are build rather than cut so it's a great project for a beginner.
In the video I refer to some other projects:

Woodwork Project: Making a picture frame with reinforced miter corners

In this video my daughter Stix joins me in the workshop to make a picture frame for the Yellena James print she bought as a gift for her Mum. We go through the following. - Calculating the sizes required - Cutting the boards to length both by hand and with a machine saw - Cutting the 45° miter both by hand and with a machine saw - Adding a bevel feature to the frame with a plane - Adding a moul...
Woodwork Tools: Introducing the 78 Rebate/Rabbet Plane
Переглядів 15 тис.5 років тому
A bit different to my usual projects, in this video I take a look at the 78 style rebate or rabbet plane. I'm going to be using a rebate plane in upcoming projects and so thought a video introducing it might be worthwhile. I recently bought a second hand Record 078 from a flea market and so in this video I clean it up, sharpen the cutting iron and make some test cuts. This video may be useful t...
Woodwork Project: Three Pot Planter from Reclaimed Hardwood

In the project a make a garden planter for three plant pots using some wood I salvaged from an old garden table. I use dovetail joins to join the edges and use some simple carving to add a design to the end. I use a band saw, chop saw, trim router and thicknesser machine in the project, but most of the work is done using hand tools. I use the machines more than usual in the project as I had rec...
Woodwork Project: Wood and Resin Coaster Holder

However, in this video I show a method for making them without requiring a lather. www.adventuresintshirts.com
Woodwork Project: Make an alternative to a clamp when you don't have enough

This video shows a quick and easy method for making an alternative to a clamp, using simple wedges to apply pressure. This video is probably most for those who new to woodworking, those with more experience no doubt have used this method, one like it or have their own solution. However, if you need to clamp up a job for gluing and you either don't have any clamps of the right size, or you just ...

Woodwork Project: Jig for Mitered Corner Boxes - Using Hand Tools Only
Переглядів 54 тис.6 років тому
Hand Tool Woodworking. I recently set myself a challenge to build a mitered corner box using hand tools only. The hardest problem in that kind of project is cutting accurate 45' angles along the length of a board, so I designed this jig to help. The reason behind all of this is the recognition that a new woodworker with a limited number of tools is often prevented from trying out some more adve...

Woodwork Project: Coasters from Scrap Wood and Resin
Переглядів 76 тис.6 років тому
This project is a little different as it doesn't feature much in the way of fine woodworking, but I hope you'll enjoy it none the less. I rarely throw away anything that I think might come in useful and so I have various tubs and boxes of odd scraps of wood stashed around the work shop. In this project I make use of some of the scraps by making a set of coasters. I make a sleeve by constructing...
Woodwork Project: Wooden Crates that last!

How to make wooden crates This video shows how I made a couple of robust stackable storage crates from some cheap construction timber. The whole project cost less than £12 ($17 US) for materials. If I have to shoot a really long board (5-6 feet) would you think say, making the two side pieces hollow triangles work out?

    • @adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905
      @adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905 5 днів тому

      That's an interesting thought. If the material you use for the sides is rigid enough, it might work, although you would lose some depth due to the workpiece not being able to sit flush with the faces of the sides. I think some experimentation may be required.

      @@adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905 I am trying to find a way that will work with 5-6 feet long miter/bevel. somehow if a way is found to put the piece between the rails and the triangles that should let a much longer board be slide in. i could add further triangles to make a strong supported long jig

      @@adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905 I do like however that in your jig its the blade / plane / cutter thats angled instead of the workpiece being angled. I feel one should be able to extend the cutter to a longer length with much less wood and support than if we had to support the workpiece itself at the inclined plane. The workpiece I can support on some framing whose only purpose is to hold it up at a level height, and somehow we need to find a way to slide the setup along the piece, perhaps with some long piece of wood acting as a rail.

    Really enjoy your videos and your voice is excellent for voiceovers. Perhaps sell your services. Excellent idea of making a garden box with dovetails. Gives it a little more longevity. Dovetails can be corrected if you take out too much material. Luthiers or instrument repair techs do this on a neck re-set, if the guitar/violin has a dovetails. They often find the maker or former repair tech has already tried to make good a bad fit. Your video has made me rethink a garden planter idea I have. Thanks

      @adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905 5 днів тому

      I will 'correct' things from time to time on my fine work, we all make mistakes, but I think it's best to work with the assumption that taking off too much material should be avoided in general. Luthiers tend to be exceptionally skilled and I never fail to be impressed by them

    I just cleaned up one of these today, missing the fence unfortunately but the basic plane is totally sound after a hundred years and some light oiling really brought it back to life :) I figure I'll just use an external fence and we're all good.

    • @adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905
      @adventuresint-shirtswoodwo3905 Рік тому

      Hi Trevor. Good luck with your woodworking journey. I don't have the exact dimensions to hand, but i would stress that I built this with bits and pieces I had to hand. Thinly really important things are to cut accurate 45' at the end of the side pieces, to ensure the front is bang on 90' to the sides and to make sure the from rails are parallel. I use lollipop/popsicle sticks in a lot of projects like this as the are factory engineered to dimensions with enough accuracy for woodworking. SO they are great for making spacers etc.

    Being obsessively enamored with all things of Japanese design, I’ve made several of these boxes in the past but still always watch because I always pick up something that helps with future builds. No different here, as the positioning of the second lid cross piece has always been the most tedious part for me as I can’t stand the slightest gaps at that step. Your registration block will solve that in the future. Thanks for that and the chuckle I got at the end with the realization that someone else repurposes their old sweat socks.
