This is a channel about comic book appreciation. Comics as a medium have always struggled with some lousy reputation and stigmas that, though diminished over time, have never really disappeared. Yes, comics are superheroes and we will discuss them in length, but a medium is not a single genre. We will also explore other aspects of comics, from its early history to European traditions, the underground movement, the coming of graphic novels, and the many different genres that make up the industry today.
In this channel, I hope to provide a bigger picture and the best starting points for new readers, while attempting to expand the horizons of seasoned readers, not only in regards to new characters and series they might want to explore but also in providing a new way to look at classic, well-known stories. Comics are an amazing, often unappreciated art form, and I hope to show viewers why they have been a part of my life for decades now.

What started as a short story in an anthology series - and was almost a DC character - has grown through the years into one of the best and most popular comic franchises outside of Marvel and DC. The adventures of Hellboy have expanded to include stories of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and solo stories of Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, Witchfinder, and a whole Universe of other ...

Along with the original Jessica Drew to Julia Carpenter and Mattie Franklin, all who used the name Spider-Woman, this video also includes MC2's May Parker, the alternate Spider-Gwen, Silk, and even the occasional comics starring Mary Jane Watson. These are the essential comics featuring Spider-Women. Top Ten ranks as fol...

Some characters take a while to resonate with readers and find the right writer that can make them great. Spider-Man is not one of these characters. From his very first appearance, he grew into one of the most recognizable superheroes in comics and the very symbol of Marvel. He has enjoyed many great runs by many great creative teams, and despite going through some dark periods - I'm looking at...

The 50 Best DC Super-Villain Teams
Переглядів 476Місяць тому
We have ranked heroes, villains, and superhero teams, which leaves us one final topic on this series. DC doesn't have as much success as Marvel with its super-villain teams, it seems. Many appear as small variations of each other with little to distinguish between them, and most fall into the archetype of a mere dark reflection of the heroes. Still, there are great stories to be read and great ...
Essential Doom Patrol Comics
Переглядів 5392 місяці тому
A team of super-hero outcasts tagged as the weirdest superteam of all time, the Doom Patrol served as the main inspiration for Marvel's X-Men while being themselves heavily based on the Fantastic Four. Their 1960s run fizzled out, the 1970s revival was a dud and the late 1980s series wasn't going so well and faced cancellation when a young writer fresh from England named Grant Morrison turned i...

The quintessential superhero sidekick has gone through many incarnations in his 80-plus years of existence. Dick Grayson has outgrown the role to become Nightwing, Jason Todd has suffered a tragic end only to make his way back to the fold, Tim Drake has shown that the role of Robin is more than comic relief, Stephanie Brown made her mark if only briefly, and Damian Wayne has turned the dynamic ...

EC Comics lasted for a little more than a decade and came to an end almost 70 years ago. Yet, in those few years, it shone a light onto an entire generation of comic artists, it battled government censorship, it produced some of the best crime, horror, and sci-fi comics ever seen, and it changed the way authors are acknowledged and how publishers interact with their readers. Ever thought of ranking superhero mantles/legacy characters?
@@lukelay3823 I did a Best Revamps that included several legacy characters. But I might do something more specific soon. I’m toying with the idea of a series of character rankings - wizards, soldiers, monsters, sidekicks, the list is vast…

Essencial Supergirl?
@@rogeriopaixaopeceguini8350 Coming in two weeks, followed by Every Superman Run.
Marvel should make a MAX Omnibus from the horror based characters: Blade, Man-Thing, Zombie, Hellstrom, Werewolf by Night etc.
pheNOMANal video. Straight, to the point, well researched. liked and subbed.
This list is ridiculous. Most of the cartoonists here are great artists, but some comic geniuses are missing, especially French, South American and Italian. Alberto Breccia and Sergio Toppi are not here! In general there are too many American cartoonists, many of whom are considered great only because their characters are famous. I'm sorry to say it, but this list was made by very ignorant people.
Batman year 1?
@@a.potato9464 Yeah, I didn’t include it because it was published in the monthly series, and at the same time I thought a four-issue story didn’t qualify as a “run”. Otherwise it would be a top 3, for sure. Funny enough, the original plan was for Year One to be a limited series, but DC opted to publish it in the Batman monthly series as a way to bring new readers to the title.
@@comicbelief I didn't know it ran within detective comics well thanks for the clarification
Is Schism collected on any sort of Omnibus or large book for that nature?
@@godzillagus8358 I don’t believe so. Even Prelude to Schism and the tie-ins to Generation Hope are separate collections. I thought it might be part of the Wolverine & the X-Men series omnibus, or the Avengers vs X-Men omnibus, but a quick search shows this is not the case.
@@comicbelief then do I understand correctly that Schism fits in between Wolverine & the X-Men Omnibus and AvX Omnibus? Curious choice to leave it out. I can only speculate why since I'm so behind in the timeline. Many thx for the response 🙂
@@godzillagus8358 Actually, Schism fits before both. It’s the event that launches the Wolverine & the X-Men series, then only a few months later we get Avengers vs X-Men. Schism impacts on both series and should be read before them. But since Schism had a prelude series, and they also gave AvX its own prelude (an unnecessary cash-grab about Cable), I guess putting them all together would seem unwieldy.
Ngl, came for the archetypes, had an impromptu blues session instead 😂. Song is a banger
I work with comics every day. What exactly is the "top ten" supposed to denote? Kamandi is a top ten but Avengers 1 and X-Men 1 aren't? How? In what world? (With respect, cool vid.)
@@frightmikesart Fair point. I tried to judge not the Avengers or X-Men as a whole, but Kirby’s specific run. For the Avengers, that was only 8 issues, for the X-Men it was 17. One can argue that the Avengers only became great after the issue 16 shake up, while the X-Men took more than a decade to become great. When I think of Lee and Kirby, I think of Fantastic Four, Thor, Captain America…
@@comicbelief Wow, that's very interesting and an unusual perspective but I respect it. I feel like all Kirby is great Kirby, regardless of his span on a particular series. Do you have a video like this for Ditko, Kubert, Wood, Buscema Bros, Romita? Those would be cool to do, I feel.
@@frightmikesart I make more videos on writers than artists. Either because they appeal more to me or because I find words easier to judge than art. I did a video on Alex Ross a while back, and I did one on George Perez, which I’m yet to upload. More to come, certainly
@@comicbelief Oh I'll definitely check both those out, legends. Cool
Im just a Jim Steranko , Michael Golden fan representing. Throw in some Clairmont and Perez and im good!
For me spiderman definatly has the best rogues gallary in all of comics
Near Mint Condition, morgrig and your channel are the HOLY TRINITY of reading orders!! Your work in particular is of the greatest for newcomers; very comprehensive. Thanks for your work!!
No Frank Bellamy? Maybe next time? And no inclusion of Kevin O'Neil? I was in an exhibition and my work was just round the corner from Bellamy. Yikes! The Bellamy estate specified that his work should be behind glass and bolted to the wall! Bolland and O'Neil were there too, not bolted to the wall. This was back in 1982. What happened to me? I ended up being a sole bloody carer. So much for my career! Pissed off? You bet!
Can't believe that so many of the MCU movies are from the newer/later books. And so many of the older/former books and storylines were ignored.
@@paracyntrix that’s not entirely true. Most often, the movies heavily update classic storylines to the restrictions of the MCU. Or take classic elements - like Stark’s alcoholism - and include them while not making them a centerpiece. What Marvel does is connect the movies to recent stories by title or main villain, but use older stories for the actual plot. The first Iron Man is a story from the 80s. Winter Soldier is from 2005. The fight against Thanos is from 1991. I’ve made videos about it. One for each MCU phase. Check them out.
Will you make video for Manga publisher like Viz, Kodansha?
Could you follow up on the Godzilla comics, please?
Would you consider doing a Valiant or Boom Studios video?, I love your work, btw🖤
@@williammaldonado0909 I consider everything. There will be videos on Valiant, Boom, Dynamite, also each Image Comics studio… it’s all a matter of time management 😉
Yay! I love Hellboy! Also, I hope you do a Superman and Wonder Woman starting points videos soon
@@tributestosfiction Superman is already done. Just trying to mix things up a little before another “every run ever” type of video. It will probably take most of August.
@@comicbelief No Problem man. Variety is always important
@@tributestosfiction Superman should be the last of these multiple video series for a while. For the rest of the year, I hope to rotate videos on genres (crime, horror, sci-fi, and so on), videos on countries (Italy, Spain, France, Belgium), on writers and artists (golden age, silver age, etc) and some superhero essentials for good measure. Should be fun.
@comicbelief No problem. I Like how you don't just focus only on Marvel/DC comics and introduce people to the independents. Although, I still would like to see WW starting points in edition to Superman (just to complete DC's big 5), ultimately, it's your channel and I'm glad your running it the way you are
@@tributestosfiction oh, it will come soon. Promise.
Kinda shocked you didn't rate The Crooked Man higher
@@motorcycledude101 I love it too, like the Wolves of St August, but I tried to consider the entire collection, and it’s hard not to rank larger series higher because they move the plot forward. I tried to give every notable short story its own entry, but the video would never end.
@@comicbelief Fair enough! Keep up the videos man, I recommend my friends to watch your videos when they ask for reading orders and good starting points for specific characters.
Correction Avengers annual 7 and marvel two in one featured the cosmic cube, not the infinity gems
@@marshalltimmons7451 I believe you are thinking of Avengers #125, which concludes a Captain Marvel story where Thanos has the cube. The Final Threat introduces the infinity stones for the first time.
