  • There's a lot of history before Marvel Comics became Marvel Comics. The publisher rode the popularity of the 1940s super-hero golden age as Timely Comics, reinvented itself as a publisher of sci-fi, horror and suspense in the 1950s as Atlas Comics, and again rebranded itself as Marvel just in time to usher in a new era with Fantastic Four #1. Through the decades, it has seen great success, sued for bankruptcy, then clawed its way back to become a media juggernaut. This is the history of Marvel Comics.

What I remember most about Marvel Comics in the 1960's was one got a sense the whole group was one universe much more than DC. Before being influenced by Marvel most of DC characters each existed in their own world and rarely overlapped even the team-up books seemed separate from the characters regular series. My first long term exposure to Marvel Comics was actually the Marvel Superhero cartoon show, broadcast from New York with a live action host, Captain Universe, in a generic superhero costume. I was12 at the time.

I’ve read that, when DC started to worry about Marvel, meetings were held to discuss Marvel’s “secret sauce”, but they just didn’t get it, considering everything from the kind of font, style of covers or the use of certain colors, instead of Lee’s charisma, Kirby’s style and a cohesive continuity

    Awesome video!
I started reading comics around 2005/2006 and the first comic I've read was the X-Men, followed by Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, Daredevil, Wolverine, Avengers, and many comics from the silver and golden age that I called oldies😂
It's sad how marvel keeps missing the mark since it literally has such great potential to be popular again. Especially with the ability to read comics online.

Though Marvel Comics is currently dealing with the struggles involving bad comic runs, being Zeb Wells Spider-Man, other comic issues such as Spectacular Spider-Men, Incredible Hulk Age of Monsters and Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man have gained a lot of comic fans wanting to read comics again.
But I think the New Ultimate Universe will change this.

Absolutely. I’m withholding judgment on Hickman’s run, because as great as he is, he surrounds himself with mediocrity, as in the Krakoa era X-Men. But yes, Marvel always has some gems hidden among the duds.

Why doesn’t Marvel never do any MAX series anymore?
