How was the January book you picked something I am actively planning on reading and already own?? So excited

There aren't many books compared to what you've read so you've done really well. I'm not a fan of the series, but Fury of the Gods would be top of the list because it's nice to get a series finished. Wind and Truth would be good, too, but it's about 4000 hours on audiobook and that's a lot at this time of year. My personal fave of these is Best Served Cold (surprise). It's about a motley crew on a revenge mission in Styria. Some of the characters feature a bit in The First Law, but most of them are new. It's not really a festive season book, so maybe one for next year. I hope you and Kirsten enjoy your buddy read. The Poison Song was the weakest of the series, for me, particularly the way some things wrapped up, but you might have a different take. I didn't make any plans so I can't get called out :) but I might try making some next year.

Wonderful video Dann! I am determined to read some Grimdark Fantasy next year and Abercrombie seems a great place to start. The Girl In The Bog sounds intriguing! Unpopular opinion- Frankenstein is just mediocre for me. I would recommend starting with The Color Out Of Space or The Shadow Over Innsmouth with Lovecraft, both excellent tales. Kick in the butt- read Lovecraft! 🤣 Hope you have a happy December Danni! 📚

I want to give a word of caution regarding Ship of Magic, since we seem to have quite similar reading tastes (albeit not a complete one to one, as I don't like Brando Sando, grim dark or horror). I have been stuck 140 pages into that book since November 2020 because I cannot stand any of the characters that I met in that book. As a huge fan of pirate stories (One Piece, Pirates of the Caribbean and Treasure Planet all being some of my favorite stories in their respective media), I was super hyped to read a very character focused pirate story with a female protagonist and magic ships. But then Hobb went out of her way to write one of the most unlikable female protagonists I have ever met (think Janel from Chorus of Dragons, but worse, imo). Super arrogant, vastly hypocritical and very dumb, all while being presented as this martyr of a character that we are supposed to love and root for. I am additionally miffed at Hobb because she _can_ write really cool and deep and flawed female characters - Lady Patience is easily my favorite character in the Farseer trilogy. To add insult to the injury, Hobb decided to create a pirate captain without a single drop of charisma. What even is the point of having an uncharismatic pirate captain in a story?? Sacrilege, I say! And then there's a creepy religious kid. There's also supposed to be at least two more perspectives, but I haven't gotten to them yet - that of a young girl that most of the reading community agrees that she is very annoying and of a ship, which is supposed to be the coolest one. If the mystery presented in Assassin's Quest (which is actually my favorite book in the Farseer trilogy - unpopular opinion, I know 😆, minus the disturbing choices Hobb made at the end) wasn't so intriguing and the mystery fan in me wasn't begging me to figure it out, I would have dnf-ed this series oh so long ago... Sorry for an essay of a reply 😅but I thought it might be useful to let you know, as a fellow character driven reader, what is waiting for you in that series 😊

Hope you enjoy Teller of Small Fortunes! Sadly the cat doesn't talk and plays a fairly minor role, but it was still fun to have a cat in there. Ooh I've got Daughters' War on my TBR in December! I've heard it's way darker than Blacktongue Thief so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. Hopefully you enjoy it when you get to it! I'm trying to cram a bunch of my 24 in 2024 in December, I definitely need to make some changes to that next year so I actually get to more of them. 😅

That's a really good list, and we have few books or authors in common. I'll have to try The Invisible Li bray next year. I made a gut instinct list and then overthought it (what a surprise!) and worked out the average rating I gave each series. Gentleman Bastards only just made it and The Ninth Rain drops out of my instinctive top 10 because the third book in each series was a relative let down. ASOIAF and HP both started before 2000 so I won't include them. The audiobook narrator sells a lot of these series. Anyway, here's my list - 10. Gentleman Bastards 9. The Locked Tomb 8. Raven's Shadow 7. The Licanius Trilogy 6. Superpowereds 5. Stormlight 4. Rook and Rose 3. Book of the Ancestor 2. The Kingkiller Chronicle 1. The First Law I'm going to petition the Supreme Court to overturn your one author-one series rule so I can put the Age of Madness at 2 :)

I hit some goals last year, but kind of forgot about others. So my strategy this year, is that I cleared two shelves and put all my goal books there - it's right by my desk so I see them all the time and won't be able to forget.
