Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad in HO scale, primarily circa 1952. A channel to keep a record of my work and share with anyone interested.
Layout Update 7 7 24
Layout update for 7/7/24. 0-8-0 #256 is a Proto 2000 model I re-lettered and added LED lights and TCS V4 sound to with Scale Sound System Speakers. We take a look at new trackage in the diesel servicing area including ready tracks, fuel delivery tracks, along with a misc set out track. A neat turnout control button I first saw on Peter Lee's channel, link below along with the button.

Follow along the full length of the railroad as we run a coal train northbound from North Bessemer, PA to Conneaut, OH. We'll see Union 0-10-2 and B&LE 0-8-0 switchers while double headed 2-8-0's lead our train across the road. We pass south bound ore trains lead by 2-10-4's and ABBA F sets. The mainline was just completed, so join me as we continue to build the Bessemer & Lake Erie in HO scale.

You power complex looks amazing. I would love to run it for you!!!
Love what you are doing Ray!
thanks great up date
Loving how the layout is coming along! The big tonnages in the transition era are always fascinating. Would you be interested in 3D printed outside clasp trucks for those hoppers? I've designed and printed some for the Carbon County Railway out here in Utah, which was another U.S. Steel road.
@coreybonsall I got some from ..... I forget who. They're nice. But I'll pass, the ones with the kits are close ish, and I have hundreds to do.... thanks for watching!
Awesome work, Ray. Does one of your earlier videos show the entire track plan?
Yep. It's changed a little, things slid around a little.... but nothing huge. ua-cam.com/video/0gXkIA4uTuY/v-deo.htmlsi=3pEjVBFFBmQYYaw4
Thank you for sharing.👍
Can you tell me more about the kadee power trucks you put in your new 0-8-0? I have one of those too and it has pickup issues.
Sure. Just remove the stock tucks (the chains come out by gently prying up the pin with an xacto) and putting the trucks in. Each truck grabs one rail. You'll need to drill a hole to pass the wire through and patch it in to the power from the harness. I'm also running a keep alive. yankeedabbler.com/products/590-kadee-bettendorf-aar-electrical-pickup-caboose-truck-ho-scale-part-380-590
What was that steam locomotive chassis from and why is it sitting there?
A project I set aside for a bit. (Literally and figuratively apparently) it was a prr decapod I'm reworking into the chasis of a 2-10-4. I'll get back to that one of these days soon.
You have done a lot over the weekend. Can't wait to see it finished.nice!
Who knows if I'll ever be finished. But I'm having a lot of fun trying.
Always look forward to your updates, Ray. Peter does amazing work!
I'm loving the Sydney project. Peter makes Tuesdays worth doing.
That shops area looks great! Love that 0-8-0, those just look powerful...
All business for sure!
Wow, from a sketch on a paper napkin at dinner, to a working circuit + video in 26 hr.
Thanks for the help! I enjoy these little puzzles.
I love that older proto 2000 steam engines are still finding places on DCC layouts, its a wonderful sight
Yeah I love proto's, I have a 0-6-0 with tcs planning to get a 0-8-0 love this thanks!
@@RTtrains thats awesome!
I have the 2 0-8-0's, an 0-6-0, and 3 2-10-2's, all with TCS. They are all great runners and pullers and look good too. Absolutely love them.
@@bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061 awesome
Big fan, always somehow end up watching these within an hour of uploading, it seems this time im so early (16 seconds) the audio hasnt made it to the video yet 😂
The video does in deed have audio now 👌
Lol yeah there's a weird point when you first upload like that. Thanks for watching!
Great job, from a 70's die maker to a tool maker !!!!
Looks great Ray! I have a 3 section transfer table on my Greenville shops module and that extra bracing to flatten out the table is absolutely necessary!
@@dmirble thanks! It's good to know I'm not being ridiculous!
Hello Ray, Question for your engine shop design. What about sand coming in hoppers for the engines along with sanding towers ? Sorry if it's a dumb question.... I'm working on a engine shop area too. I Like seeing different ways guys design their areas. Thanks.....
@andygerber4624 in my last vid I show sand coal and ash service on the steam side. I'm working this stuff out for the diesel side now. Fueling track is in, along with a place to spot tank cars.
This is an interesting project you're working on with the transfer table. I'm not familiar with transfer tables, but I think my favorite railway, the Pacific Electric had one. I wish you lots of success in completing your layout. I hope to see it when it's done. 👍
@everettthepetractionguy4222 thank you!
Stupid question Ray - what is the operational purpose of a transfer table? I can see a use for them in a tight space where you need to switch cars to other tracks without the space for leads and switches. Is that their primary use case or are there others?
@admiralseabass8993 not a stupid question. You're pretty much right on. It's a space saving way - and possibly cheaper than building a huge amount of turnouts. Typically you find them around shops where things get pulled into or out of various maintenence bays. At former GE Transportation (now wabtec) we had transfer tables both at the erie and ft worth plants. In a lot of ways they serve the same function as a turntable - but without the obvious ability to turn an engine around - which became a non issue in the diesel days. Linear buildings fit more places easier and are a more efficient use of space than roundhouses. Hope that helps.
You have got to be so stoked to have this helper take this train over that grade w no problems. I just congratulate u on such an insane railroad. Everyone watching, I'm sure are just drooling over this. Shaking my head in amazement. Thank you, Ray.
This is so ama,ing to see! I remember when you were stressing on that bridge. Now to see those beautiful trains run across bridge! A lot of work. Congratulations !
@@patricknoveski6409 thank you!
That G E sounds amazing. Classic u boat, and horn. How fun to be at this stage. So cool, Ray.
I was watching some 40's video of that exact engine # 304. Such a unique switcher. The 304 you modeled is so precise it blows my mind.
IMPRESSIVE
@@TheNorthwestWind thank you!
Well THAT was a lot of fun Ray - really enjoyed it from beginning to end.🤗 Actually, you could've continued for another half-hour! Love your layout and the saga of these adventures. Thank you for sharing. . . . . . . . 🚂Lawrence
great vid and project. it's going to look great. installed one three or four years ago. worked great for a yearish then indexing stopped functioning. tried the manufacture for replacement electronics and/or repair support, no luck. eventually removed OEM electronics installed a DCC decoder. table operates but no indexing function.
Well done Ray I learn so much from you. Thank you
Glad to be of help!
THANKS ,GREAT project, waything to see it finish
I just subscribed. Seeing that lashup of 4-5 Bessemer units hauling pulling those hoppers with some painted blue, just takes me back. That's very cool for sure.
Thanks for the sub!
Great build,Ray! I got to visit Greenville many decades ago. You certainly are capturing the feel of things as I remember. Thanks for posting
Thanks! That's what I'm after, so that's great to hear!
It might be a touch overkill, but it'll definitely run reliably for a long time to come. I've worked with the original release of that kit and if I recall correctly it was lacking in overall engineering. I think some of the short comings have been corrected in later runs. Fantastic job!!! I love your layout
😅 overkill is how I roll. Thanks for watching!
Running smooth as silk❗ Like the addition of the strengthening structure you built. It's unfortunate that the gear-mesh is very audible, but that is part of life's compromises - like selective compression; However, the audio of the loco(s) drown that out somewhat. All told it is a VERY impressive built 👍👍
It could be quieter for sure. I haven't looked at the mechanism in the bridge at all yet, might be able to help it a little.
Nice job Ray! That engine facility will be very impressive!
@@mapruitt thanks Mark!
Thank you for sharing. Very nice.👍
Thanks!
That traverser looks fantastic. I have only seen one in real life at Didcot (GWR)
Very cool!
Pretty cool! Are you plan on doing any operations on here because this would be perfect for a traintrax system to be put on when the layout is at this stage.
I've done one ops session already and planning the next. I'm not familiar with the system you mentioned. Got a link?
Dude, I was just about to write what an incredibly tight screw pattern you have. 😀I hope I live long enough to see this railroad with scenery.
Lolol me too! I'll get to scenery, last layout had ok scenery - but it's realistically a few years out.
Hi
HI skipper!
If there’s one thing that I want to try and do is to try and re-create the Bessemer in O scale unfortunately, there is very few Bessemer items
Champ made a whole bunch of decals....you might be able to find some at auctions ....MTH made RTR stuff.....a lot of BLE
@@user-lq4mo8dw1p good idea

Love those multi colored hoppers! The realism is killer! 90s era, is the time! Lol! Thank you for sharing
While it's not what I'm going after, the 90s were kind of the end of mainline interesting equipment with variety. We didn't know how good we had it.
Thank you for sharing.👍
You're welcome!
Must be a lot of satisfaction to building your own turnouts.
It is. Just.... time consuming. I literally subscribed to your channel yesterday. Love it. Can't wait to see that oil refinery progress.
@@bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061 Thanks! I'll be following along with yours as well!
Another great update, Ray! I agree with you completely about the Fast Tracks turnouts. They perform better than anything on the market. Interesting about cutting your own ties. Weren't you 3-D printing them for awhile?
Thanks Mark! Yes, I was printing them. But I can laser them much faster, cheaper, and without the mess. The end result takes paint better. I'm printing smokebox doors these days. That staging yard under Casper made my back hurt just watching you, well done!!
@@bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061 LOL! Thanks!
I always look forward to your updates, Ray. Great track work!
Thanks!
The nand built switches are awesome, you achieved a lot of reliability, super job!
Thank you!
Lookin' good Ray.🤗 The changes that you are making in Engine Service really make sense, and the diesel shops could also make a nice screen in front of the branch line. I love 2-10-2s, but that 0-8-0 is really nice - especially the way you play Rachmaninoff on the chimes!🚂Lawrence
Agreed on the view block. The shop buildings are big, so, you won't see behind them till you walk over. Inside that little loop of track climbing the grade is going to be a typical western pa farm.
Nice job Ray. Nice job. And those hand laid turnouts? Awesome. I tried hand laying turnouts one time and failed miserably. Even had all the Fast Track tools. So now I have been slowly changing out my Atlas Code 83 #6's for the new Walther's #6's. Really like them. Keep up the great work.
I see the new walthers has the solid points. I bet they're nice, long as the frogs are repeatably good. If I didn't need so many, I'd consider going this route. Thank you for the kind words!
That bicentennial car is spiftacular and I did a similar thing in my layout but in reverse got 80/90s train running on my layout set in present day!!!!
Awesome. It's too cool of a car to ignore.
Well done Ray.
Thank you sir. Still following your build, some awesome stuff gong on
Thank you. You motivated me
