  • A overview of how i hand laid my yard ladders at XB (North Bessemer) on my HO Bessemer & Lake Erie RR. I used Micro Engineering code 70 rail, fast tracks paper templates and filing tools - on laser cut ties I make myself. There are many videos of how to do this on the web by guys that are bigger pro's than me. Hope this inspires somone to think if I can do it, they can do it!

    It's just like you said, Ray. There are excellent videos out there that teach the step-by-step process... BUT (

    Looks great Ray! Thanks for explaining what a frog was, I was about to google it.

    Dear Ray, awesome and beautiful yard ladder! Love the way you’ve explained your methodology. Am still doing the jigs, definitely will look at the quick stick geometry. Also, am fiddling with Templot for special switch, turnout, crossover, diamond geometry. On soldering, heat sinks, heat sinks, heat sinks. Nevertheless, starting at one end will also do the job. Great video. Cheerio

      Thank you! When I do the back half I play with heat sinks some more, you make a good point. The jigs are a great way to gain skill. If im just building a single switch, I still go to the jig, it's s just too easy to get good results.

    Thanks for taking me from scared shitless to do this to maybe with the jigs I won’t screw it up too bad, lol.

    Thanks for posting these videos. To film and edit these must take a great amount of time on your part. Plus working, and constructing the model railroad. Guess Betty had the day off, because she did not make an appearance😄

      Sleeping on the job.
      You're welcome. It's a little work making these, but I definitely don't go all out on production quality like some people. Happy to help spread knowledge, big lack of skills in the world.

    I also would like to thank you for doing these videos. I am learning quite a bit and look forward to learning more with each new one. I will be starting a layout within a year if all goes right so between you and a few other guys I am confident that I will make a pile of mistakes but should be able to work through them.

    Link to my laser files here, my only ask is to give me a mention if you use them, share them back if you improve them. drive.google.com/drive/folders/18hVUmhN_0oHyfJTbMJL9U0hx7Jc7UsDN?usp=sharing

    Thanks for putting this together, it's inspirational for the rest of us to give it a go. Off the cuff style is fine, don't bother with any production, maybe just make sure that you turn the camera around so it's shooting landscape and not portrait. Oh, and would you kindly add a link to amazon basswood you got for the laser cut frets, and maybe put the actual files themeselves for download that we can use to cut our own?

      You're welcome! I try to think about the camera aspect, obviously I'm occasionally not thinking. When i put this video together a few expletives may have slipped! I will link the Amazon stuff, if not today this weekend. I'm usually pretty open to sharing files, I usually just do it on a person by person ask and email.

      @@bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061 Whenever you get a chance to add the link, no rush. Personally I don't have an issue with expletives - it actually means people are more honest than others (there was a science paper or two about it even 😄). How do I contact you via email...maybe you could it to your UA-cam About, under email for business enquiries field?

    Absolutely beautiful and inspirational. Where was this video when I was building my staging yard I looked for a step by step but didn't find anything. What is the plastic track you are using for the siding do you just feed the rail through the plastic tie plates? I presume you solder your frog and then file the stock rails? Great video, this will get saved for LOTS of future reference.

    • @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061
      @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061  Рік тому

      Lol thank you! The plastic ties are central valley "branchline" spacing. The rail just sits in a pocket, I glue them in place.

    • @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061
      @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061  Рік тому

      Oh, I actually start with the stock rails. I'm a manufacturing guy, so, i see the stock rails as my 'datums'.

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek Рік тому

      @@bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061 So when you put the stock rail in the filing tool, have you already soldered the frog. Or do you take measurements of where to file… file them and then solder the frog after?

    • @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061
      @bessemerlakeerieinhoscale6061  Рік тому +1

      @Otter Creek & Rio Grande oh! Sorry! I understand now. I mark and file before soldering the frog. Much easier than trying to fit the soldered rails in the filling tool

    What laser printer did you use? I am thinking about getting one for my n scale layout and the idea of layout and printing my own ties for my handmade turnouts looks like a great idea.

      Following up on that DXF file for the laser cut ties, would you kindly share it? Also, I wonder do you use Pliobond to glue the rail to the ties or something else? Trying to find something else instead of Pliobond because it's too toxic for my liking...

      @@TrainzLuvr shared above. i just use super glue, (carefully) i figure once the ballast is down and glued, it's all pretty solid anyway. I've also just let the ties sit under for show - I've also tried using a kadee spiker. honestly - they all seem to work just fine.

      I see you've nicely packed the designs to take the least amount of material, awesome! What is the difference between the _1 and _1M files?
      Good to hear about super glue, was worried I would have to end up using Pliobond or some other cement with VOCs.
