My name is Soraya and I am a mixed media artist. I love ART! I adore color! And patterns. And the creative process.
This channel will be about everything art and the creative process which is all encompassing.
I deeply and wholeheartedly believe that we are all creative beings. Art heals and nourishes and sustains us. I also believe that we must start before we are ready, we begin by doing and that’s exactly how I’m approaching my UA-cam channel.
Thanks for being here!

Experimenting with Oil Pastels!
Переглядів 1804 години тому
Oil Pastels in Cardboard Books…in this video I’m applying oil pastels over top of both cardboard and tea bags and, as always, I’m making a conscious effort to be in “beginner’s mind” full of curiosity and playfulness rather than expectations.
Creativity Requires Acceptance of Ebbs & Flows
Переглядів 1097 годин тому
In order to become more creative (in the active FLOW state) we need to accept and value the natural ebbs & flows of the creative cycle. In my experience, there are 3 distinct varieties of the “ebbs” that can happen in our creative lives. 1. In my opinion, this isn’t really an ebb but simply part and parcel of our creative lives; we need to feed, honour and respect our creativity. A lot of times...
Experiments With Oil Pastels & Tea Bags

The teabags over top of the oil pastels seal them but also dull their luminous color…so it’s a trade off! I learned a ton which is why it’s super important for me to have an art journal simply for experiments!
Adding Tea Bags Over Top of Oil Pastels!!!

So while I added tea bags on top of my cheap composition lined notebook, I also add tea bags over top of them as well!! I want to see what happens…will it seal the oils? Will they remain vibrant and true in color? And since this is my experimental art journal, I feel absolutely free to try anything at all in here…and “fail” & learn in the process!! So excited about this entire tea bag situation...
Combining Oil Pastels With Tea Bags = Delicious Mixed Media Layers

I’m adding my beloved oil pastels over top of my beloved teabags and…it’s nothing short of magical! This is my cheap lined composition notebook that is an experimental journal where I can try out new ideas, color palettes, art supplies, prompts etc! It’s awesome to have one or two of these so we can feel free to try out new things…and we can always rip up the pages and make collage for our art ...

Strengthen Our Color Muscles!

I allowed my spread to completely dry and I’m not happy with my color palette. So I use assemblage to inspire me as to the direction I want to go. Ways We Can Share Our Stories Through Creating Layers

Tea Bags & Handmade Papers = Joy!!!

Feeding Our Creativity

After allowing everything to completely dry, I start adding luscious paints. I’m in love with the texture, interest and depth the tea bags create…they become so integrated into the page and accept the pigments beautifully. Plus they’re already stained a luscious earthy color from the tea leaves. Swoon🥰

Moist accumulation in paper can cause the oil pastels not adhere. That had happened to me before. I'm guessing....
Hi Adriana…that’s a great observation! I don’t think that’s the case here because I applied collage all over the page and allowed it to completely dry (over weeks!) but…who knows? I ended up loving the distressed look but still puzzled at why the oil pastels resisted. Thanks for your feedback and happy creating 🎨👩🎨🖌️
It’s always so nice to see you creating your unique and amazing figures ❤️💙💛🤎💚🧡🩷🩵💜♥️
Thank you Alexandra 😘
I’m creative all year round. I don’t feel I have a particular time or kind of weather when I’m more or less creative. However, I have a wide variety of creative practices: I hand stitch, I machine sew, I crochet, I do art journaling, I do my own art journals, I paint and draw. And although I don’t have a particular time to do each of these things, it’s true that I don’t them every day (except stitching, I do it every day), although I do a creative thing every day since I was a child. But I don’t force myself to create, it simply flows. But I think everyone is different and each person has their rhythm, their process and their own way of doing art ❤️💙🩷💛🧡🩵💚🩷🤎♥️💜
This is absolutely awesome🤩 Not only do you tend to your creativity but you also know your creative rhythms! Europeans tend to be more relaxed (well…certain countries) but American culture puts emphasis on produce, produce, produce!! And creativity is often viewed as the flow state only! I need to move to Portugal 🥰
@ Well, from what I see on instagram, American artists are much more focused on “producing” art, they’re more self conscious about it and less self confident, while European artists tend to be more relaxed (as you very well say) and don’t mind posting things that aren’t necessarily perfect. Of course, it’s not a rule, but it’s surely a noticeable tendency ❤️
Yes…I’m super thankful I was born and raised in S Africa for 12-13 years…before I started my UA-cam channel, I wrote a manifesto for myself and I wanted to leave all my “mistakes” in because there’s so much to learn that way. I don’t follow a lot of UA-cam artists because everything is so highly edited and curated, I can’t really learn anything 🤷♀️ Yes…American culture says produce, produce, produce!!!
awesome!
Thank you!
Great tip.... beautiful "tid bits"......
Thanks Kathy…nothing goes to waste with us, artists 🤗
Could the resist in the green dress be a (too giant) blob of ModPodge? It may have a too smooth or slippery surface, so there is insufficient grip. I'm just thinking. But I do like the result; it has a very ancient mural vibe!
Hi Martine…I thought of that as well but no…there aren’t any blobs. I honestly don’t know what it could be because I cover every inch of the cardboard page with non glossy collage 🤷♀️ but I’m really living the effect especially after a fellow artist commented that it looks like a tattered dress 🥰
I get all excited about getting to the moment where I can "go to town" on clothes. But MALE figures keep showing up in my laborious projects and they persist in hanging around. I let a few stay, hoping they would go away , but now I have to , well, never mind. The great news is, I went to get birdseed at the hardware store and sample paints were 50% off. I got three colors that are LUSCIOUS house paints and have had a blast all afternoon. I seem to perform better with house paint. Thank you SO MUCH for being the Color Queen. I will never be the same because of your mentorship. To think there was a time in your history that you didn't use colors, is unfathomable.
That’s amazing!!! Years ago…I was using chalk paint to redo some of my furniture and the leftovers were so luscious, I started using them in my art. Have fun …and thanks for calling me the Color Queen ☺️🤗😘 I LOVE that!! But yes…sadly there was a time when I was afraid to use colours and I will perhaps talk about that in a future video 😭 Thanks for being you 🤩
On the dress where the oil pastel didn't work made me think of a time or someone who is having hardships and her dress is old and needs repairs. That blue pastel was a gorgeous, rich color!
Patricia…I absolutely love your perspective…just thinking about it makes me swoon because it tells a story!!!! So many stories 🥰 Thank you for sharing that! 👩🎨🎨🖌️😘
@@sorayanulliah Thank you for sharing how art can have a story! I really love that!
Yes Patricia…one of the things I absolutely love about art…especially our journals!!
Ahhhh! Frida ❤ my art heroine! I see Egon Scheile too and Picasso of course 🎨 so much inspiration in one beautiful space Soraya 😍 how fortunate you are!
Yes!!!! Schiele 🥰…I adore his work!! And I’m super grateful for my art studio🤗
I loved the background and held my breath as you were painting over it. Then I loved how it sorta showed through the blue. Really pretty. I wonder if there is glue in the spot that the oil pastel isn’t sticking or maybe no glue or collage and the oil doesn’t want to stick to the original book. Gorgeous look anyway.
Hi Brenda! I can’t figure out why it won’t stick in that particular spot! It’s not the original cardboard book page that’s resisting it because I cover it completely with collage. But I, too, like the crumbly look where it shows through! PS I made a video about a week ago where I showed the tea bags I use and how I prepare them to use in my art, wondering if you managed to see it as you were asking? Happy creating 🎨👩🎨😅
@ yep I saw it. I had to catch up on a few but I’m caught up now.
@@brendawalsh8254oh! I’m so glad…I hope my explanation was helpful? Just use whatever teabag you have as I’m sure they are all slightly different but have the same basic properties.
Awesome! What do you do your paintings on?🤔 Are those old metal signs? Great idea! 🙂
Hi Jana…I paint on canvas, Bristol paper, art journals etc…those are postcards I’ve collected over the years and I put them in my art studio as inspiration 🤩

Wow! They are gorgeous! Your daughter is quite the artist. Very talented!
They are so beautiful, Patricia…she handmade them for my birthday 🥰
@ She sounds like a very thoughtful daughter!
I agree with your other comment the tea bag gives an antique look which is awesome! I wonder if you put a transparent or translucent paper over the oil pastels they would keep their vibrant colors. I love using tea bags, but I have not tried them with oil pastels. I will have to try it. I have so much to try. LOL! Thanks for sharing this series. It was fun to watch.
Thanks for following along Patricia! The tea bags are translucent once they become wet (say with the glue) but I think the oils lose their vibrancy because it’s being covered up even though you can still see them. If you sealed oil pastels with just mod podge , it would dull the colours. At first I was a bit disappointed they lost their vibrant colours but actually when I looked at it this morning…I love the antique look (as Kathy so accurately pointed out). One thing that came out from this tea bag series is I need to drink more tea to get the bags 🤣🤣🤣
@ Good point! I was thinking it was the tea color that dulled the colors but it was the modpodge. The antigue look is a bonus for many. I need to drink more tea too. LOL!
I'm behind watching, but see you posted next video. Excited to watch it and see results! Thanks for sharing.
🙏🏽
To me the tea bags gave the vibrant colors more of an antique look....very beneficial to artists who prefer that look...this "experiment" was more of a discovery that will benefit many artists..... personally,I love it😊!!!!
Yes Kathy…you expressed it perfectly 🥰 I was bummed at first because it *did* push the color back but I was just looking at it this morning and appreciating the subtle beauty & “antique” look. Plus it’s fully sealed but with texture! I’m not sure the camera picks up the full lusciousness of the teabags!! Thanks for watching 🤗
I can't remember what country you are in, but i get empty tea bags in the tea aisle here in Ireland at the main grocery store. If you want them stained, you could always soak the entire package in a cup of tea
Wow!!! That’s amazing!! Another lady told me you can also buy large sheets of teabag papers 🥰 And for me personally, the paper is already stained from me making my actual tea so I don’t have to do it again…it’s the most magical addition to my art, and I’m in love 🥰 Thanks for sharing this info & for watching 🤗
No week is complete without a visit and binge watch of my favorite channel and mentor. I always find comfort, solace, inspiration and hope in this space. I want so desperately to respect and learn the time tested foundations of art but if it wasn't for you, I would have repurposed my "color wheel" for a frisbee this week. It would have at least brought the dogs joy, playing fetch! Your bold exploration and use of color is exactly what I yearn to see. If it doesn't pass the "luscious" test, it just doesn't seem to work for me.
OMG!!! Thank you so much for your kind words…I’m so honoured & humbled 🥹 And you made me laugh out loud with your color wheel to frisbee situation 🤣 Poor maxi would be so confused 🤕 But you know…there’s an awesome book called blue and yellow don’t make green by Wilcox. He states that the color wheel is completely outdated …it’s an awesome book! Also…I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of tea bags so perhaps you’ll join me??!!👩🎨🤣🎨 Hugs 🥰
@@sorayanulliah Hahaha! I am getting my collage and ink materials assembled as we speak. Thanks to your CPR creative pulse recusitations. You revived me to keep working! The tea bags are so cool. I'm using coffee tea bags and droplets of red wine. Any book you suggest will be added to my library. Thanks so much.
The droplets of red wine sound luscious🥰
Such fun adding the beautiful tea bags!
Yes, Patricia…I’m still in the tea bag kick🤣 and you’re right, it’s just so much fun🥳
I look forward to the results of adding the tea bag over the oil pastels. Thanks for sharing.
Me too!! I’m excited about how they will affect the oil pastels 🤞
Can't wait to see if the tea bag seals the oil pastels....how fantastic!!!!
Me too Kathy…we can find out together 🤞
This was a very clear explanation, and I agree with Alexandra, who writes below about the importance of boundaries. But I think many women who act "available" are not choosing this role but were prepared for it during their childhood. Especially the eldest child/daughter. They're raised as a "help", an extension of the mother figure. Helping guard the younger children, doing chores, and helping in the general household. You were held responsible for the results. For many women born in the 50's, this was a standard way of living. Time to express yourself through art or any other creative form was sporadic. Unless you were an 'excellent' musician, painter, or sportsperson. But then you were to exercise/train for hours, again with minimal time for exploring other paths of creativity. In those days, you had to respect the hierarchy without a second thought. Children had no voice or maybe a tiny one. So, as a good child, you listened and nodded. You were passive. Or, as a naughty child, you had a "tantrum" or were disobedient. You were aggressive. I've never learned to be assertive because of the lack of communication between my mother and me. I've always been a people-pleaser because I was taught to be 'a good girl'. It was hard to raise my daughter and ensure I was doing it the right way, the 'unknown' way for me. I re-raised myself while raising my daughter. I did a good job saying it myself 😉.
Hi Martine…yes, as crucial as boundaries are, it’s the *belief* systems we were programmed with that determine when/how/if we set them!! That’s why the first step is looking at our belief systems. And I hear you about the way children were raised. Under toxic patriarchy, women and children are often lumped together and then, women would often replicate those patterns when raising children. It’s so thickly entwined …beliefs all inside one another like a huge ball of yarn🤕 And yes…for me as well…raising my daughter had me confronting my own beliefs and then starting to do the work largely because I didn’t want to pass down generational traumas. And I often say that giving birth, birthed me as well! So glad to have you on this journey, sister 🥰
@sorayanulliah, I am the happy one! I was initially attracted by your vibrant colours, but you won me over with your words and wisdom. Thank you!
Oh Martine🥹…you are too sweet. Right back at you 😘
@@martinelateste4558PS also…thank you for letting me know I made sense because sometimes I wonder if I’m just rambling on 😅🤣
I find all the points you mentioned very important, but I believe the most important one is setting boundaries. Many, many women believe they should be “available” for men in all kinds of ways (choosing his clothes, serving him his food, going wherever he wants to go, etc) and they should say “yes” in all situations to parents, friends, husbands and children. It’s as if women “choose” to put everyone’s interests before their own. I say “choose”, because we don’t live the 19th century anymore and some women (even in western cultures) live to serve others and think that’s their obligation. Sometimes it’s not the husband who “demands” that she’s “obedient”, it’s her who truly chooses to obey to all his wishes. I see that in my stepmother, who does everything my father wants (he’s a kind person, but being a man, he takes advantage of this and she’s like his servant) and I also see this in the wife of my stepmother’s son. She is also a servant to her husband and two children. They do absolutely nothing and she does everything (she cooks for them, she does the laundry, she cleans, etc). I think that women sometimes also contribute to their own situation of being servants to their husbands and family, because they don’t want to set boundaries because they want to avoid arguments and confrontation. I’m saying this probably because I was raised by a strong mother and grandmother who didn’t allow anyone to diminish them and always stood up for themselves. ❤️🤎💙🧡💚🩷💜💛🩵🤎♥️
Hi Alexandra…your stepmom sounds like a typical Indian woman😳🤕 Actually, a lot of different cultures socialise women in this way😭 I feel your pain…unfortunately, all we can do is focus on our own healing journey. Yes…boundaries are super important but beneath that layer are our belief systems. If we don’t have discernment regarding the beliefs we allow into out lives/minds etc…we won’t be in alignment with ourselves, we are running off programming without even knowing 😳🤕😳🤕so…our beliefs will determine whether we choose to set boundaries or not. We may not even think we can because of those beliefs!! I’m going to make a video about unconscious agreements (that sounds a lot like what your stepmom is operating under)…and this can lead to trauma bonding, codependency etc. Once I realised what unconscious agreements are…game changer!!! If we look back a few generations even…we will uncover the most awful beliefs regarding women and children…and if no one in our lineage did the work, then those beliefs get downloaded into us 🤕🤕🤕😭😭😭 Yikes!! Wish we could chat in person but grateful we can connect this way. Big hugs 🥰
@ ❤️❤️❤️
What medium are you using to glue down the tea bags?
Hi there Betsey…I’m using Mod Podge in matte so my pages don’t stick if I’m art journaling. This particular piece in on Bristol Paper. I lay the glue down, arrange my teabag and then apply the glue over top to seal. Hope this helps!
Have you experimented with wetting the teabags before putting them down? Maybe they can become even more translucent...
Hi Martine…unfortunately, wet teabags become even more fragile…they tear easily and become difficult to place properly on your substrate. I use them dry and apply mod podge both on the substrate as well as over top of the teabag. Hope you’re having a wonderful day 🤗
I’m an English teacher and I believe that an artist who posts their art on UA-cam is both a teacher and a guide. A teacher, because they teach new techniques, show new ways of using some materials, introduce us to new materials, teach us how to combine colours, teach us things we haven’t thought about, etc. And a guide, because they don’t say “this is how you must do it”, they say “I do it like that and you do it the way you feel is right for you “. So, I’d say that you’re both a teacher and a guide and that’s why I love your channel so much ❤️💙💛🩷💚🤎🩵🧡💜♥️
Hi Alexandra…thank you so much for this! Your perspective (especially as you’re a teacher as well🤩) is so helpful and valuable. It reminds me of the saying that goes …the best teachers are those that lead students to the doorsteps of their own understanding. Thank you for this…it helps me as I confront my own self doubts. Love, light and lots of all the good stuff 🥳😘🤗🎨

Sending you so much love and hugs across the miles 🥰
I prefer to think of you as both a facilitator and a guide Soraya ❤ a guide through the Labyrinth of Creativity, for me Creativity and art are both Labyrinthian. Especially as an intuitive artist. We never really know or understand which path or source our intuition is going to take us, and as artists, once we allow ourselves to take whatever path our intuitive and inspiration leads us to, we are open to it if that makes sense (?) I love how this piece is looking ❤ it has so much depth since you added the pinks and the black 🖤💕 (I have a confession to make; seeing orange and green together makes my brain hurt lol 😄🤭 they don't work together, strange because I red and green are complimentary colours. Curious 🤔) Am I the only artist who has that curious problem?
Hi Sandra…thank you *so* much for this…your kind words of support and encouragement as well as your description. I absolutely love your use of the word labyrinth to describe art/creativity etc…YES!! It is much like that and (in Jungian terms) the labyrinth is a powerful symbol of transformation, empowerment, individuation etc so I love that!! It’s so rich and multilayered🥰 And thank you for thinking of me as both facilitator and guide…I’m humbled and honoured 🥰 About orange and green…honestly not my fave color combo but I was going after the blue and orange combo that I so love and the green came into the mix😅 As an aside, though…a lot of times when I think a color combo just won’t work, I go to Pinterest and punch that exact color combo with Indian Saris and you will be amazed and surprised! Green and orange is a fave Indian sari (or salwaar kameez…this is the pants and tunic outfit) combo and I wish I could send you some pics. Try it out for yourself and let me know (you can use google and go to images or Pinterest). 🎨
@@sorayanulliah I will do exactly that, thank you for that suggestion. Although I used to use Pinterest a lot in the 'early days' it also hurts my brain 🧠 lol (too much all at once, information overload 🤯🥴) however I will definitely check it out - or better still, try some swatching. How fascinating! Re: art and the labyrinth, I wasn't aware of that connection with Jung though it makes so much sense! There is so much I don't know re: Jungian psychology, the brain and art. Definitely need to return to my reading.
@@sandrafisherhayes3219I totally get the Pinterest overload situation…I’ve deleted the app and then reloaded multiple times myself 🤕😅🤣 Yes…instantly when you talked about the labyrinth and creativity…I thought of Jung! Thank you, Soraya, for such an authentic sharing. I’ll always and forever be grateful for two precious words I read in 'Women Who Run with the Wolves,' words that opened the door to my profound healing. These were ‘instinct injured.’ As the mother of two children molested by their father, those two non-blaming words told me that my natural instincts had been short-circuited somewhere along the line. They helped me to understand that I was not a bad person and that such a disconnect could be repaired. For hours, I thought about those words, and that afternoon, I called two support groups, one for adult children of alcoholics and another for mothers of sexually abused children. My healing journey began with the two non-blaming words, ‘instinct-injured’ and again, I am forever grateful to Clarissa Pinola Estes. Thank you again, Soraya, for your important sharing.
Hi Eleanor…thank you so much for watching and sharing this small part of your story with me, difficult & painful as it is. You have so much courage for doing what you did…seeking help for yourself and your children. Many others choose not to so please…take a moment to own the enormous steps you took to healing yourself and your children. Yes…so many of us have “injured instincts” and generally, it begins in childhood if we look far enough. They start off in survival programs that kept us safe as children facing horrendous circumstances and them we carry them into adulthood. I’m so glad you came across the work of Dr Estes and it has been a roadmap to healing. So it is for many of us…welcome to the fireside…I’m so glad you’re here 🥰

Thanks Brenda…it’s a process! I’m not liking the color palette of the second background! PS I made a video including the tea bags I use and the process…will post tomorrow 🤗
It’s very pleasing to look at, that’s for sure!!!❤
Thanks for following along! The textures from the teabags are gorgeous…very subtle but packs a punch!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing, Soraya!
🤗 Thanks Patricia!
What type of tea bags are they? I only have like the black tea with the string and tag. Something tells me it isn’t the same.
Hi Brenda…these are the Bigelow Brand Vanilla Chai and it, also has a string and tag. What I do is simply put all my used tea bags in a bowl and when it’s completely dry and I have about 20 or so, I empty out the contents, rinse them and allow to dry. In the summer I put them outside but you can dry them indoors as well. They are so thin they should dry in a couple of hours. Then you can use them in your art.
PS I could show the tea bags I’m using in an upcoming video if you would like? Just let me know!
Inspiring indeed! 😊
@ sure if they are readily available
Thank you so much for watching and following along🤗
I also use coffee pads because I love circles. I cut them open on the back side, rinse and dry them, and collage them with the cut to the paper (so I use them 'double' as they are). They're a bit thicker, and the colour differs from teabags, but that's nice. You can also buy teabag paper in big sheets! Medical exam paper is another kind of paper that is fun to paint on / colour and use as collage paper afterwards!
Coffee pads are a great idea! And I had no idea that tea bags came in sheets 🥰 I actually drink a lot of tea and I love the staining on the papers so it’s no effort for me to use them. I’m so in love for so many reasons and can’t believe it took me this long to use them in this way 🤗😅🥰 Thanks for your feedback…it’s so very much appreciated🤗

Love the teabag texture and gorgeous colors! Yes, please would love to see Part III.
Just posted Patricia! Enjoy🤗
They are available in Australia, made by Crayola evidently. More expensive here but there are also a few cheaper alternatives.
Thanks for letting me know. Portfolio isn’t found anywhere in Europe that I’ve visited and it’s dirt cheap in the US but pricey in other places! Thanks for watching🤗
Wow! Indeed, those colors are superb. Yes to part III😀
Thank you so much for watching…this is such a fun series to do! I’m simply smitten with this whole teabag situation and I hope you’ll try it out as well! 🤗 Thanks for your feedback…part 3 posts tomorrow 🎨👩🎨🖌️

Thank you Sky Lark 🤗
Love using tea bags because they do add so much texture and I love how they are a grungy color. LOL! They look so awesome! I look forward to part II. Thanks so much, Soraya!
Hi Patrica…you’re absolutely correct…the tea bags are gloriously grungy…and so wonderfully beautiful. I’ve used them in my junk journals but never thought to lay them flat on my paper…a whole new world 🤗🤩 Thanks for watching!
@@sorayanulliah A whole new wonderful world! :)
Of course, we want a part 3! What kind of question is that Soraya? We love it!
Hi Martine…thank you for letting me know because sometimes I wonder if I’m the only one who wants to go down the rabbit hole of tea bags (and such) 🤣🤣🤣
Very interesting new series. Merci😊
Thank you so much for following along and I’m glad it’s helpful🤗
