dodgyCam Reacts - Lyrics in a bottle

Rush Fanatic, Marillion Advocate, Porcupine Tree (& Steven Wilson) Fan Boy... DTL (Down To Listen) / Colour me Curious about all the other amazing bands out there I have yet to listen to... (Addendum: Candidate Nightwish appreciator!)
I've been a music fan since before I hit my teens and a writer (for a given value of writer) for my whole adult life - even managing to make a passable living as a professional writer for the past 30 years, give or take. So, I guess it's not surprising to say lyrics matter to me. As a 'heavy user' of reaction videos, I figured maybe some people would enjoy digging into some lyrics with me and seeing what we can see...

dodgyCam reacts - Steve Hogarth (mr h) - Better dreams
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love mr h's solo album, and it contains some very dark, deep and delightful lyrics and tunes... This one is especially dark, especially deep and true. It is alos a quite amazing piece of story telling...

A late addition to the 'Dark Santa' files, another song that spoke to me in the moment and gave me an excuse to look at a a song and a lyric that has meant a lot to me for more than half my life and has taken on a weight of additional meaning the more peripatetic that life has become... "When I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find, and when I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind..."...

Certainly one of my all time favourite lyrics and one that constantly ripples through writing room discussions, character debates and deep life talks... I have known and loved and loathed people that were the Tram... I have been the car... I have also, I do not doubt, been the Tram... There are lyrics that are life changing and their are truths that inform your understanding of life ... this is...
dodgyCam Reacts - Marillion - Trap the Spark

Another relatively simple Marillion song, but something of a romantic and maybe even Creative Mission Statement and, as ever with mr h and his lyrics, a serious emotional punch... Sometimes, when life happens, your head throws up a sound track that just 'spins round in your head'. On the day my beloved Uncle John took his place in glory, this song was undeniable and remains so... The musical is astonishing, this performance is sublime... And, on this day I could not and would not Wait for it... "Death doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints... " RIP Uncle...
dodgyCam Reacts - Meat Loaf - A Tribute
Переглядів 1942 роки тому
This is not the greatest Meat Loaf song in the world... This is just a Tribute... And a story about a brief moment where the the Venn of his life and the Venn of mine briefly (kinda) intersected. He's been part of the soundtrack of my life for as long as music has been part of that soundtrack, and he's, for sure, part of my permanent record, and we will never be alone as long as we can put on t...

Brilliant analysis ...the.people on this Island have been manipulated by the banking cartel to wage war on each other so they could kerp going to the bank... they hate love ...because when you love you are beyond their evil toxic reach
A beautiful song indeed.
Pre Viking actually, and as a swede with deep but not 100% sure before 600 years ago, I am not classified to really be objective, My opinion on that subject, I read the books of course, Old version at that, Can't really say anything bore about it than it's brilliant and the band at that rime was brilliant, only saw them live once. I bought all their albums of course, both on Vinyl and later CD. And you should know that I don't think the 80' s was a good chapter in music.60-early 70s. and some in the 90s where better, but that said, there will always be brilliant music. Ok, the change in available equipment and recording technique and the hunt for profit on the labels does a huge difference.
You can tell the lyric video was done by an American as it is spelt wrong!!!
This was the B-side of the band's first single (12" version) and is STILL the best song they have done.
Good man. I knew the band well in the 80's. I must have seen them 10 times at the Chelsea in Hillbrow. Thanks for this.
I played this track a couple of days ago and the lyrics came up , i was going to turn the subtitles off but a line of the lyrics that came up and hit my soul and made me leave them on. I mentioned the lyrics to the better half and told her how brilliant and deep they were and now i have come to your video reaction and it seems we are resonating the same. This track now means much more to me. Let there be peace around the world instead of divide and conquer
Saxon used to play regularly at our local rock club here in the Rhondda valleys, south Wales. They were called 'Son of a bitch' back then. Their record company said no I believe. 🙂
Best reaction video I've seen in quite some time. There is also a really nice a acoustic version they did for the BBC on youtube. What a beautiful song, chware teg, shed a Celtic tear here in Wales. Take care, from a 65yr old metalhead who got into, quite early, Al Stewart with 'year of the cat'.
❤
Good call with Ian Dury - I would add a little Edward Tudor and Billy Bragg in the mix as well! Cheers!
there once existed a website with lyric explanations of Marillion songs of the Fish era, maybe still to be found with google search
Woke up heavy hearted on a Monday morning with this song in my heart. Found your channel. Thank you so much for explaining it so passionately.
Thanks for the tribute. I was hoping you would Comment on the last line of this song. It seems to me most people don't catch the fact that he changes it to "WHEN you're crying out loud you know I love you).
Thomas Lauri Johannes Holopainen was born in a town of under 9000 named Kitee. As was Emppu Jukka and orig bassist Sammy. Tarja from a nearby village of 500. His mom was a music teacher and English teacher. She actually gave Tarja piano lessons. From age 7 he was in music classes. Piano. Sax. Clarinet. All thru high school he and Tarja were part of a music club together. He originally wanted to be a biologist. He always was a bit shy and introverted. He even did some of his schooling in the US where he developed a love for metal 4:57 Metallica. He orig was going to do a mood acoustic band with Emppu also from Kitee. He asked Tarja to sing demos heard how powerful her voice had become in the yr since HS while she was studying music and the rest is history.
Love it and just discovered this song... there are so many of my beloved Marillion... here is an other gem... beautiful. Great feeling you put into it!!!
I'm really not into Fish and I'm a Mr H fan and Marillion of course... After watching 2 of your videos, I wanted to see if you could make me like Grendel? No doubt it's poetic, and I love poetry, but the black side of Fish just doesn't touch my heart and soul. Thanks anyway Paul and great that you recorded it and made a video for us.
Hi Paul, I just discovered you and you speak right out of my heart and I thank you for it...
It's poetry. It's Punk. It's angry. It totally encapsulates what the disenfranchised working class are feeling, and why the right-wing populist politics is on the rise. It's sensational actually.
I know this song since I was a kid and I was reeeeally picky about my music, but I loved it immediately. I didn't understand a word, because I am italian, but when I grew up enough to study and learn the meaning I loved it even more. When I happen to sing it in front of an audience, I do my best to deliver it with all my heart and respect. Thank you for your beautiful reaction.
❤🥹grazie per la tua reazione
The day the world changed forever.
There are a number of once great bands that are still going, they are playing for a hardcore loyalty fan base.Marillion, Camel, I still love hearing them. Love this analysis of this great song. I studied the lyrics more closely when I tried rehearsing it. I think you’ve got it spot on.
Quite possibly my favorite Rush song. Thanks for reacting to it.
The song is about materialism, and acknowledging an inner self that is far far removed from that. Something everybody people feels innately.
One of my very favourite lyrics too. “You didn’t notice me as I passed you on the stairs”
You made a perfect choice.
Your admiration for Jim really touched me. Most of what he did was with Meat, but he also had amazing songs with other Artists. Have you reacted to Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler? That was up there with anything.
Thank you for reviewing this. One of my all time favorites. The writing is absolutely perfect. This whole album is chocked full of killer songs.
The entire "Bat Out of Hell" album is one of those rare albums with no filler, each song really fun and at times beautiful, then it concludes with this genuine masterpiece, the greatest song on the whole album.
I was there at hammy odeon when they played this.
Hey Paul, stumbled on your channel, great to work with you on Soon Comes Night. Thank you for giving the cast and crew an awesome piece of story to work on. Your channel and talks here are awesome and will watch them all. Take care! (Shaun the VFX guy)
This is why some great music were not as popular are they should be when initially released, because it takes maturity and life experiences to appreciate certain types of things, the vibes can only be perceived through years of living .... young kids simply do not have the life experience yet to appreciate many of Spandau Ballet's songs including this one ... All those years ago, I too, dismissed SB as wannabe musicians who tries to channel old classics with typical cheesy stereotypical recreations by superficial tweaking of older great music... many years later I realise I was totally wrong ... their songs did not sound like any other, the vibes that they impart are totally unique and dives into your heart if you're not so cynical about how they look ... I could never have appreciated songs like True or Gold as a young person, not looking back I;ve come to love these songs and most of all, Through The Barricades can make me cry sometimes ... their masterpiece which never became a big hit because of youngsters like me ...
Nobody ever talks about him raising the mike stand at the end pretending to smash her head in. Hilarious!
He had several great performances of that song with Patty Russo, even funnier than this one.
It is the ultimate telling of every teenage love story ever. The line with "I swore I'd love you till the end of time" and "praying for the end of time" still makes me fall to the floor laughing. Loved your conversation. Your daughter is as smart as a whip, btw.
If you add the lyrics to "Guide vocal' and "Duchess" to "Heathaze", the emotional intent is clear. Taking up a career as an actor, musician, or artist can be as addictive as Heroin will the same results. In 1976, Tony Banks was asked in a Contemporary Keyboard magazine interview what advice he would give to young musicians, his answer was don't do it.
A beautiful song by a fantistic band.
This is like one of Tony's "terminal" songs and together with You Might Recall one of their most underrated songs.
If you are so inclined check out the video with the title of "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD COVER BY KIRK". It shows a guy singing it in some bar as part of a Karaoke performance. Brilliant, I thought!
Loved the music and lore of Streets of Fire, too. A dope cast with Miichael Pare, Willem Dafoe and the wonderful Diane Lane who, even if she didn't actually sing, had me reeled in and enthralled completely.
All that you said, my feelings exactly. I was 13 when it came out. Knew the words by heart after a short while, belted them out in front of the mirror. The feeling to be young, alive and desperate and maybe a little bit angry sometimes, but all good. Steinman and Meat captured our time, our way of living, hopes and dreams, what made life special. Nothing much so nowadays.
Love your vision of this song...My Favorite Band
Jesus. Someone... finally... who gets this band.
I love your reasoning and honesty. It's like Sleafords foe me are my dirty little secret? Yet i should be celebrating them. Everyine should know and learn them.
The first youtuber reaction vid i've seen that's got it . a very personal song
I hope all is well with you? :)
Awesome reaction and testimony! Very touching, thx!
I listen to Genesis since I was a boy child. Have all their records and box sets. Loved them with Peter Gabriel and without him. Loved them in the 80s as well. The meaning of this song written by Tony Banks is deeper than most people think. And is a simple meaning at the same time. This song is a farewell from Tony Banks to the old prog music times and music pieces. And actually Heathaze was the last song of its kind recorded by Genesis. I strongly suspect Tony knew or at least felt the pop music was coming soon all around the world. And he knew there will be no room nor space for this kind of music pieces anymore. Never again. And Tony Banks was always the heart and soul of Genesis. So this song is actually a farewell from Genesis to this kind of songs. And by making that decision (Genesis' new musical direction) Tony was feeling like an alien in an alien place with all the emotions he felt by saying officially goodbye to this way of writing music which means future wont be the same. It wont have this quality music. It will be different music and there is no other way. Otherwise people wont attend the shows. Tony realized the band was going to have to start throwing some bread to the ducks instead. Heathaze is my favorite song from Genesis. And the way Phil Collins sings this song is out of this world. Particularly from "Beware the fisherman..." til the end of the song. One of his finest moments as a vocalist. Think about it. And you will see this is the truthful meaning of this song.
I think I agree with you. I’d never thought much about it before but this is a real transition album - half prog rock, half pop.
Wonderful reaction and thank you for not asking to 'smash' the subscribe button. Instead, seeing as you didn't ask, I shall do this quite calmly and very willingly. Many thanks - oh and yes, Heathaze is a thing of beauty on an album where Phil truly came of age as a vocalist. Cheers! (oh and I should say that I don't really have a problem with the whole button smashing thing - there are several whose videos I enjoy who may employ this terminology from time to time but that's cool - just before I come across as a difficult bastard who wilfully refuses to play ball just because, haha. As you were, hehe)
