Marko said in Finnish: "If i'll sing the chorus, will you join me?"
This really is a very beautiful sea shanty and a marvellous live performance. I always shed some tears, when his band mates come along.
Last summer i had an honor to meet Marko in my hometown, when he, his wife Cami, and their doggo were returning from a Lapland trip. We had a nice little chat. He was doing fine, and he told that he will activate later in this year. About two weeks ago a seasoned Finnish metal group "Waltari" released a majestic song "Below Zero 2021" featuring Marko as a singer.

@@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 And a little about the name "Waltari". It comes from the internationally most famous Finnish writer Mika Waltari, who wrote excellent historic fiction novels and lot's of other stuff. His most famous novel "The Egyptian" was the best selling foreign novel in the US from 1949 to 1980 when Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" surpassed it. They even made a Hollywood movie from it in the 50's (Curtiz, 1954). Quite a mediocre film (***) starring Edmund Purdom, Victor Mature, Bella Darvi, Jean Simmons and Peter Ustinov. 😁

Amazing these rabbit holes we can chase into.
I liked the song, it had elements of new metal, but also elements of very OG metal guitars.
It is a funky song and I really do like marko's growl.
      Thanks again.

Very well done. Even the background on the stage matched the Marillion design on your shirt.
I love the entire setup. Marko is alone on the island, the fans are the sea surrounding him. And the rest of the band chips in as the light at the end of the world in the end. And how can you not love the way he walks back to the band when he is done singing. Just with a warm smile on his face. No self-glorification. No ego. And then, Floor's smile. It's just an example of how the world could be.
There are certainly worse religions than Nightwish around these days.

The FEEL of this performance is FOR SURE absolutely lovely.
When I prep to do a song I scan the lyrics and half look at the vids, but the moment I really concentrated and zoned in I was sold.
I love this performance and adore - once again - the REAL WARMTH this band seem to have for each other.
      Glad you dug it.

It’s interesting how different interpretations can be.
Personally, the imageries the lyrics show to me is a man who gave up hope and is content with it. A bittersweet ending.
He’s had everything he’s ever wanted, family, a refuge to come home to:
    Princess in the tower
    Children in the field
    Life gave him it all
    An island of the universe
Then everything was taken away from him:
    Now his love’s a memory
    A ghost in the fog
He was alone in the island for far too long, isolated from the world, family has since passed:
    This is for long-forgotten
Light at the end of the world
And he basically feels nothing about his fate that the world has to cry on his behalf:
    Horizon crying
    The tears he left behind
    Long ago
And he contemplates taking his own life:
He sets the sails one last time
    Saying farewell to the world
When you set sail, you raise the anchor, not drop it to the sea:
    Anchor to the water
    Seabed far below
He didn’t get aboard his boat but he was close to the sea, the anchor was for himself:
    Grass still in his feet
The imagery, for me, shows a man beside the sea, not really a beach because his boat is there, too. It’s deep enough to drown in. He tied himself to the anchor and threw it to the sea, waiting for the chain to finally pull him. “Grass still in his feet.”
He was ready, this is what he wanted for a long time being isolated in an island. He was content, he’s seen it all:
And a smile beneath his brow.
He’s been guiding the travelers with his light, the wisdom he’s amassed through success and suffering:
    He lightens the beacon
Light at the end of world
    Showing the way
    Lightning hope in their hearts
    The ones on their travels
    Homeward from afar
But he’s alone inside, with nothing more to live for “so long ago”:
    This is for long-forgotten
Light at the end of the world
    Horizons crying
    The tears he left behind
    Long ago
    So long ago

I know this is a very popular and familiar take on this song... And it does make sense. But, in the context of what little i know about the man, the time and the place, what can i say - I get something very different from it.
I'd love to do a line by line and try and work out why, but I have 22 pages of script to write, three episode treatments, notes on a new tv proposal and prep for a week long script workshop in Lagos!
I'll prolly not remember, but if I do I'll try jump back to this and try parse out why my take is so different, but honestly, my gut feel is this is a song about hope!
Thanks for the comment and watching.
I'll try remember to jump back in after the 28th, when I will have no less work, but will be done with travel until jan!

Always interesting to hear your thoughts and interpretations. Did you notice how he softens up on the chorus so as to invite in the crowd? I think this being effectively a homecoming for the Finnish members of the group makes this intimate performance even more special, and I love how Floor welcomes Marko back onto the main stage at the end - no egos and happy to let each member of the band shine. I hope he does whatever is right for himself long-term, whether that's coming back to the band or not. Tuomas, I think, pretty much always ends on a message of hope, and this is why it's so appealing for you and many others. Keep working on that boat - cheers.

I think it's ALL a message of hope, but you are right, the homecoming aspect of it and the arrangement of this version really lean into that and create something quite magical.

It's about a lighthouse keeper. I never got suicide or depression out of this song. To me he's preparing to leave the island, retiring perhaps. He's reflecting back on his life, maybe aware he is nearing the end of it due to age.

    • @dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170
      @dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170  3 роки тому

But, you realise the lighthouse keeper is a metaphor, right? This is Tuomas, the song is not about what the song is about and has way deeper layers than just a lighthouse keeper singing about his lighthouse. In just the same way as there was not ACTUALL a lady who thought all the glittered was actually gold. This song is poetry and metaphor and, even a small bit of reaeasch finda a large body of people who think it is about depression and suicide and end of life - being also metaphors for the end of Tuomas' relationship with Tarja. Whereas i chose to believe the metaphor of light at the end of the ocean of darkness, the light house if you will, is about the hope of travelling out of the darkness into the light i.e, hope. Certainly, it's about way more than the text. The text is only there as a place in which Tuomas hides his sub-text - which is kinda the only reason i can and do keep looking at his songs.

Again, I must thank you for the short time I spent with you and for your words. You've given me your interpretation of the lyrics of this song, and it's an interpretation that I completely agree with - it's a song about hope - I take it that way too. "Light at the end of the world" - a light of hope. At the same time, your sadness after Marko left the band - and not only, because after his complete withdrawal from musical life - your sadness is also my sadness, and probably the sadness of all Marko fans. But are we right to grieve? Marko wrote music and performed a song not about giving up - however great a disappointment may befall a person in life - he sang a song about hope. So? Is it possible that Marko - many years ago (for the first time) sang a song about himself? About the situation in which he himself finds himself? That he himself does not lose hope of seeing the "light at the end of the world", so we should not either? I hope so - and in this context, looking from this perspective - this song takes on a whole new meaning for me... I hope it makes sense - thank you for meeting me today!

(I am still expecting the moment when i get to discover if i am a writer or just someone who gets paid to write - hope I don't have to find out for a long time, but age is creeping up on me)
I am sure we will see and hear him again, and in the meantime he owes us nothing and we must - as peart said - wish him well.

Oh yes, this is one of the Rothfuss songs, right? (What a writer, what an amazing writer!)
Sadly, it's one that I can not add value to, but it's a very NIGHTWISH song, isn't it?
      Very familiar groove and style.
I like the behind the scenes stuff in the video.
I am SURE Islander is a HOPEFUL song.
      Sure of it!
      Thanks, again, for watching!
      :)
Seems like 1000 views is 'easy' if I just keep pinging y'all... But it just makes me sad for the ones y'all don't watch!
I'll find another NW song in a few weeks, I'm sure.
      :)

Thank you for your reaction! Marko is an incredible performer. - Still, I hope in the future he will do more Marko kind of music. With NW his role has not been as big as his voice and talent is. A good example is the latest performance by Marko, featuring Waltari's Below Zero 2021.

I prefer this live version over the music video. It may have something to do with the fact that Floor is not in the video. However, I do like my Nightwish live. While many other bands look tired, angry or bored. Nightwish genuinely enjoys what they are doing from the first note to the last. 😄🤘

Honestly, the arrangement of this is key.
I pretty much have nothing invested in the singer warts, but the warmth on display here and the delicacy and feel of this live version - THIS ONE - is amazing.
      I like it very much
      Thanks, as ever, for watching.

I'm prepping for a week in Lagos for a script workshop and very busy, but 'amma cut and past a reply I made earlier on this thread about that song and hope you both understand and forgive me the shortcut.

"I've actually looked at that song a couple of times. i like the feel and vibe of it very much and enjoy Marko's performance very much. But it's one of those poetic lyrics that I don't think I can really 'add value' to. It's lovely and lyrical, but I don't see any angle where I can 'insert myself', if that makes sense. Sadly, a lot of Tuomas' writing, while clearly evocative and moving, leaves little room for me to... extrapolate - and I'm not really in the market as a 'that's great' style 'reactor'. Hopes that makes sense?"

@@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 beautiful song with so much meaning and feeling. In it. I'm surprised you feel that way. And do you pre watch everything you do?

@@ejllamobeolan5025 Why surprised? I am not in any way speaking to the quality of the song, in fact I think I said, I like the song. But the 'mission' of this channel is lyrics', and as such I have to believe I can 'add something' or at the very least extrapolate from the lyrics to something of value. I'm not here to confirm bias, or create performative reactions. I'm here to try and dig deeper into things that mean something to me, or to other people - based on whatever personal connection I make with the song and the words. And not even great words mean I can add to them. Most of the Early Rush, my personal favourite songs, are unavailable to me because I don't feel like I can add anything to them. So, this is not about good or bad song, it's about my ability to feel like I can create something of value that adds to that art. And so, yes, whenever I do stuff that I don't know, I curate that stuff to make sure I can achieve what I am trying to achieve. I read the lyrics, I dip into the song, make sure it is something I like and connect to. Then, when I watch, I concentrate and and focus and experience that first REAL listen in real time. Hope that makes sense to you - it has become the evolving principle of the channel.

Wish someone would delete this version of the video from YT, cutting out Marco's fun banter with the audience before he gets into the song. Really does a disservice to Marco and the Nightwish Army!.

      Could not agree less.
Look at who posted this and what they said about why.
The band posted this as a tribute to the great man.
      It's not about that banter.
That banter is there to be found, but I think the band very carefully curated what they posted and why, which is also why I used this version - BECAUSE it was on the official NW feed, right?
