I had the blessing to see Gil at the Jazz Cafe in the early 90s. A truly incredible experience seeing him and the amazing talents alongside him that night. The highlight for me being when he returned to the stage after a short break, he addressed some friends who were sitting in the gallery there that night. Unknown to Gil, his friends had left the table in the break and I had been seated there with my girlfriend. As he gestured towards us in the gallery, he did a double take, chuckled to himself and broke out the broadest smile as the entire audience turned toward us. The strangest moment in the most wonderful night! Thanks for the reaction to this incredible song
Wow. Just wow. This is not something I would usually listen to without a gentle nudge, so thanks for that. The message is spot-on. I couldn't agree more with it actually. So much so that I have to be careful about how much time I spend in this headspace. It's an area that I can quickly move into hopelessness about or perhaps powerlessness is a better word. So infuriating. What a way with words. Thanks so much for sharing. I was backpacking around Europe during the air invasion. I met an American Air Force pilot at Pizza Hut in Garmisch-Partenkirchen of all places period in many ways our discussion reflected a lot of this which I thought was amazing considering the person I was speaking with. Really drove home the point of being "sent" to do things that didn't make a lot of sense until the money comes into it. I know what you're thinking oh, what the hell were you doing at Pizza Hut in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with so many amazing options available. Let's just say the previous couple of days at Hofbrauhaus in Munich ended in a need to stay close to 'eine pension' and eat greasy food.
Bwa ha ha ha! I once spent a night at the movies during two weeks at an art festival. Just, you know, for some 'junk food' You forgiven! Greg Proops turned me onto Gil and he has a lot to say. Go look for whitey's on the Moon (It's maybe 3 mins long!) It is utterly devastating. The first gulf war is an odd one. Clearly Saddam had to be dealt with and that invasion undone. But when you start to listen to the backstory and dig deeper, and realise that it could have been PREVENTED at various stages, then you realises that at least some people WANTED a war... That throws the footage of charcoaled bodies and burning oil fields into a much sharper relief. But, as long as there are voices like this, reminding us to listen carefully, watch carefully and ask questions... Hope remains. Glad you liked it, Gil is work a rummage, He's one of those big rocks in the stream, he altered the flow! ktf dC

You're right. it is just as rellevent today...Gil scott heron is a wording genious and although he is more or less only talking through tpart of this particular song, his words/message makes such an impression (for those who actually listen to lyrics in a song).. His voice is so silky smooth, his flow is fantastic and he speaks the truth. And, when he sings he really can sing. I bought this album and a couple of other to go with it and, while it is not my usual jam, I really do love his work. And this song, the speaking of truth, the laser sharp intellect of it. I posted the live version of it on the clip, take a look at that, it's a delight. A little more musical and a bit stripped down, lyrically - well worth the 9 minutes. I did some short presents last night, so if you are in the mood for a few oddities, rarities and indulgences... watch the skies... ktf (wfp) "Say it again!" dC

Lol, Pantheon I think 😉 Looking forward to this... Gil has a really rich, resonant voice that, for me, somehow adds to the impact of this - I'll call it a poem. Perfect delivery. Yes, I remember these events. A host of cynics leading unwilling populations into a war most didn't back. Powerful protest song that somehow never got the exposure of people like Dylan, Baez et al.
Pantheon? Gil's voice is astonishing, rich and mellow and so smooth. And his words... Astonishing. And his soul... unparalleled. Not sure I did him justice, not sure I ever could, but this song is special... so, very special. As Proops might say, Gil swirls in the heavens, purple and majestic.

That Rush lyric... perfection ... and now I have an earworm... I wish it were so simple, here where I am in the North, there are an astonishing number of 20 and 30 somethings who seem to still have the prejudices and the narrow field of view of their grandfathers, and added to that - to steal a joke from a comic I watched last night - believe Flat Earth conspiracy theories told to them over satellite radio! As a fan of Dan Carlin I know that the dark ages were not as dark as we once were taught... but I am coming to realise that the enlightenment was not nearly so light and the need for it continues... Then again, the fall of the Roman republic was just like modern day America, but with a few different names and less processed cheese and Aristotle himself is quoted as being worried about 'kids today'... so maybe we really are just a pale upright ape, endlessly making the same mistakes and acting on the same ill-informed instincts... That being said, we lived in the time of Peart, and Wilson and Gil, and for that we should be endlessly grateful. Thanks for watching, and for that earworm...
