I think you would enjoy Nightwish, The Islander, live at Tampere. Marko is lead vocalist on it. In fact, that questions me a lot. The whole family here is what we call "highly gifted or talented" or else "with high intellectual abilities" with a light ADHD associated ^^ (don't know if the traductions are as stupid as the labels are in french, and labelling is not always a solution or a help) : to be really clear, a hypersensitivity come with all this. So, I mean that since my kids are able to communicate, I've help them to built a armor to face the world for they're too much empath to bear the weights of the world (as I and their father see all of this)... Empathy is as much a gift as a curse. Your way to speak to your children is calling me on another side of the problem... their empathy can be a choice, et not only something loud to carry on with pain their all life long. It's like deciding for them whether they will serve (and suffer) or live like hermit (well, it's a bit of a caricature, of course, to be understable). I really enjoyed your deep level breakdown and connection with Tuomas' wonderful lyrical content. Floor is something very special. There are not very many rock/metal vocalists in the world who can awe you with so many different vocal colors. In addition, it is great to hear you giving some praise to Troy. Most fans know him as the guy who plays the Uilleann pipes or that guitar thing (bouzouki), or maybe some flutelike instrument. However, this video shows you his talent with the acoustic guitar as well. Nowhere to hide for Troy and Floor in this performance. Everything is stripped down to bare bones and every single mistake would be very apparent. I loved your commentary on the song. Altruism and empathy! A subject not often found in the music of a metal band. But then, Nightwish is far from your average metal band. They are so much more. Unique and special. Just like your reaction videos my friend! Be well. Peace. 🙏
That's very kind of you to say. I feel very much the same about Steve Hogarths vocals in Marillion - I suspect these emotional resonances are very much tied up with our affection and connection to the music and the band. I have dived a little into Troy and he is for sure a talented fella, across lots of genre and style. And, as you say, no-where at all to hide in this stripped bare version. I totally love the intent and content of this song, even more now people have shared some of the unknown truths with me. I suspect i like Tuomas more than I like his music, in truth. I think as a human being he is very special indeed. And i mean this as a compliment, in the same way that I like kevin Smith the person even more than I like his films - and it would not be wrong to say i was inspired and motivated by his films. Interesting you should talk about empathy in a song like this sung by Floor - a diagnosed HSP (or empath). It shows through in her interpretation of every song. It's a good part of what makes her so expressive and such a great communicator. Paean is a fairly common word for Tuomas. (He uses aeon a lot too, and Gaea. ) Love Troy's guitar in this. It was her husband that Floor met on the cliffs. Talking about this song in an interview she said "Some of the lyrical content is about me, how I met my husband. "We met where the cliffs meet the sea"." The bit about her daughter is correct - in the same interview she goes on to say "In the second verse, Tuomas refers to our daughter: "now there's one who came for me, a child of light, another tale". So beautiful, it brought me to tears!" Tuomas is a master wordsmith even in his 3rd language!
I saw reference to the HSP just now. Interesting, as I didn't even know there was such a thing until now. Obviously didn't know the cliff verse was about her and her husband, kinda amazing Tuomas is writing about them - speaks to DEEP empathy! I saw reference to the verse about the child and that quote, but not the first verse. I'm STILL gonna always be intrigued by the liminol! :) I have said it before, will say it again, the fact he does this all in English is insane to me. @@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 As far as Floor tells, she met Hannes during a concert tour, in the States(?), where sabaton opened for Nightwish. There was a deeper meaning of the cliff, but I forgot, perhaps Hannes proposed there? Anyway, you never know with these poets. And many people remarked that Tuomas is an empath himself.
@@andrelglinnenbank2856 It could be metaphor, it could be a small truth, it could be both. The point is, he paid homage to them both with the song and that is kind beautiful, right?
The second verse Tuomas wrote for Floor, her husband Hannes van Dahl and their daughter Freja. This is Tuomas way to say: thank you Floor for saving the band back in 2012 and making us great again. Greetings from the Netherlands
Yeah, I have found this out subsequent to the record. Knew about the child, only found out about the 2nd verse after the record. Thanks for watching. dC
The most beautiful version of the song. I can see folk singers all over the place attempting to make this song sound as penetrating into others souls...
Oh, I have no doubt that lots of different voices would do very different and lovely things with this. More than one way to skin a cat and the pipes of a Valkyrie are not the only option. Indeed, a common theme for me (see The last Straw) is that the backing singers often sing better than the star, but the star has that little something extra. Happily, Floor seems to have both.

@@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 Yes this version is a big favourite amongst the fans, so much so that they actually performed the acoustic version in the first show (of 2) of the recent virtual shows. It was of course just as fantastic live as it is here.🙂
@@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 I was going to make this comment but seems others have beaten me to it - yes it seems this version is much loved by the NW army - we can appreciate the simple beauty as well as the "wonderland of sound" as I heard another reactor describe NW recently.
p.s. where the cliff greets the sea is a repeat lyric first used in Elan, which is from the first album after Floor joined NW - if you listen to enough NW songs Tuomas will often put in these small references that kind of make it feel like the discography is all part of a whole (in my mind anyway)
Great reaction again DC. You know, Troy reminds me very much of Pete Trewavas. Both are multi-instrumentalists, both from the North of England (as you know, Pete hails from Middlesbrough, and Troy was born in Workington) and the both have an infetious sense of humour. She was recently asked "How does she evoke the emotions, without getting too emotional herself?" Her reply was very humble, it's difficult the first few times, then later, she can be a bit "numb", as long as she doesn't catch the eye of someone in the audience!

so, it's a power song. interesting echoes of Metalica that I can only imagine are deliberate. But, it's kinda like Rush, Xanadu, an epic song but a lyrics based in fantasy and fiction. Which means there is very little I can add, very little added value I can bring, given the nature of the story. I do dig the song, like the power and the performance, but I don't know what I can really say to penetrate the lyrics, ya feel me? It would be like me trying to comment of the writing in Lord of the Rings!) :) dC
This is my favorite piece of singing from Floor. I too am an Author. I write under the pen name, Jack July. I use the people I love in my books also. I don't know how you feel about it, but sometimes I feel like it's cheating. Let me explain. I don't have to develop a character from scratch. I use their personalities, their voice and their moods. It makes it easier for me. I never thought it was a big deal until a good friend of mine called me after reading the book he was in. He is a tough, burly man. He was in tears. He said it was the greatest thing anyone had ever done for him. All I could say was, "you're welcome."
See, I think that is amazing. Have Empathy, see it from his eyes. You said to him "i see you" and what I see deserves to be preserved and presented to the world. In a world where people seldom feel seen you gave him a small slice of immortality. I think that is amazing. For my part, what I do means I seldom end up writing the people I know into anything in a meaningful way. The worlds I write are too extreme for that. It's more like the equivalent of using the number 2112 or calling someone lifeson, it's a name chck and a little easter egg just for them. that said, I 'killed' two writers from my last writing room in some very grusom ways in my latest show - and decribed the characters in great detail, their detail. But in both cases I wanted the audience to like and care for the characters, so I wrote people I like and care for. And then I sent them their deaths with lots of laughing faces. I call it compliment! I love your story Thanks for sharing it ktf dC

Sir, you speak words of wisdom, as a man our your years should. Very well done, I'm very happy. The thing in your analysis I'd contest is the meaning of the "We met where the cliff greets...", from an interview with Tuomas I heard, that is the love story of Floor and her husband Hannes Van Dahl (the drummer of Sabaton). What follows is a cheeky little verse of hiding a note you-know-where because you have been there (i.e. the womb). I love Troy's classical guitarwork, and Floor's delicate and tasteful hovering above it. And while it seems that Floor lets it rip in the end, I doubt if she's even getting to the afterburner region, let alone to full military power.
I have been so informed, as I now know it is a song about empathy where he writes from the POV of the husband who loves the woman he works with and loves in his own way. So an empathetic set of verses indeed. I like this very much. And yes, I am sure she still has something in the tank, but in truth - as mr h says - power is not just in a 'strong arm', and the delicacy and fragile beauty of this song is well served with restraint. Thank you very much for your reaction. I have heard this song often enough and I actually prefer this acoustic version which so well fits this song as it translates the emotions so much better. Your discussion of the song brings me back to my mother which passed away 2 years ago. My mother with an empath to the point that extended family and friends always turned to her when they needed comfort in difficult situations. I unfortunately did not inherit her capabilities and I always awkward in dealing with other people’s emotions. However, I feel privileged in having at least gotten the possibility to support my mother. In fact, with all the grief and negative emotions she sucked in from other people, she had the strong need to unload herself and the one thing I could do for her was simply to be available to listen to her when she had the need to talk.

I can easily see this song, smoothed out for mortal talents, becoming widely used in community singing circles. There's an informal network in North America based on a songbook called Rise Up Singing that would love this song if they know of it.
Nice thing about most songs is, even if you can't sing it as the singer did, you can usually do an adapted version. This does seem like a more singable song. I wonbder how many Nightwish covers are out there, they don't seem like the most 'coverable' band.

A great song. While you were speaking of the second verse, I was wondering if Tuomas didn't need to fall in love with his singers to write for them. Not a real love, but a pure love from a poet to his muse. He said recently that NW would break up if Floor left the band. Thanks to enlight some points hard to understand for a non english speaker.
My sens is that Tuomas falls in love with all the people he works with, as you tend to do when you lift the covers on your feelings in order to be creative with them. Creativity, almost by definition, requires freedom and an openness. That said, according to NickR, the fist verse - on the cliff - is Tuomas writing about Floor and her husband - so, in fact, he is writing from HIS POV as an act of empathy - so, there we have another layer Thanks for watching. dC
@@zebulonmcfly9213 So, first, I bet you are creative. I just bet it's expressed in a different way. By definition, any kind of problem solving is creative. And, it prolly translates to anything where you need to trust a person, and make a human connection with them.
Hi Mr Dodgy, I thought this would be an interesting one for you. Empathy with unknown others, John Doe. Troy has some deep folk roots, Maddy Prior, Kathryn Tickell, Barbera Dickson, Midge Ure... Tuomas putting in a personal link for Floor. They are both "Highly Sensitive" people, far more aware of others emotions than most of us. Actually, seeing how they interact as a band, I think they all are. There is a phrase from another Nightwish song "Where the cliff meets the sea". Ooops. Rope and blade, I'd missed that connection. So, a little digging shows me that EVERYONE reacts to this song. Which immeduatly makes me reluctant! (I'm arsy that way!) But also, the lyric seems to be a piece of fantasy storytelling - which is almost impossible for me to add value to (for the same reason i can never do Rush Xanadu, or Hemispheres, even though they are my personal favs). So, I'm interested in finding something else by Ayreon that might offer me a lyric that i can get more of a grip on... Suggestions? (Answers on a post card!) dC
Update... The Source (to my ears) sounds like classic Rainbow, in a good way. But I am not sure any of the lyrics are something I could add value to! But i am very much loving the old school prog/Rock of it all. Like I say, reminds me in the best possible way of early 80's Rainbow! Difficult to cure! :)
It’s a beautiful arrangement. I have also tried to instill empathy in my own daughters. But I want to know if there has been a pasty white bald American inserted into any of your stories.

@@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 always very interesting to know the feelings and analysis of someone else on a so mouving song. Empathy is not a theme who can bear fogeyish lyrics and maudlin music. @@dodgycamreacts-lyricsinabo5170 well, I've listened again ^^ and I realize I totally missed the part where you talked of your children, and I must admit this is the hidden nugget (love this idiomatic expression, by the way, because it's the same in french "pépite cachée"). We aimed so much at protecting them that I don't know if we've really given them the choice. That's a pity, for the world may need people like them...
@@sagebooker Clearly empathy can be painful and maybe even a hindrance if it overwhelms you. But, on balance, I am convinced the more we are able to see each other, live in each other's skin and understand WHY people behave the way they do the better we are at coping with that and maybe even making the world a better place.

(He uses aeon a lot too, and Gaea. )
Love Troy's guitar in this.
It was her husband that Floor met on the cliffs. Talking about this song in an interview she said "Some of the lyrical content is about me, how I met my husband. "We met where the cliffs meet the sea"."
The bit about her daughter is correct - in the same interview she goes on to say "In the second verse, Tuomas refers to our daughter: "now there's one who came for me, a child of light, another tale". So beautiful, it brought me to tears!"
Tuomas is a master wordsmith even in his 3rd language!
I have said it before, will say it again, the fact he does this all in English is insane to me.

"where the cliff greets the sea" is a reference to Elan, the first song they published with Floor as lead singer.
Yeah, I've been told that, and also ref her husband. Tuomas sure does like the layers of self-reference.
That duo version is in fact more hoped in many cases.
Damn! do you mean I did an accidental pander!?

I have within my record collection, Troy on a number of albums. I have him working with Midge Ure and Mostly Autumn. He also works with Adrian Edmundson as part of the Bad Shepherds. His previous band was called Iona. Every time I hear the Uilleann pipes, I look to see who the contributor is! Take care DC
Funnily enough, when I was thinking about what I might say about this song I did think about exactly that comparison. I always forget to say half what I think I might - imagine how long they would be if I didn't! Pete and Troy do seem very similar. I'm pretty sure Peter could get a tune out of anything. We once gave him an African percussion instrument and he did just that, three blind mice, on demand! I also did deep dive into Bad Shepherds, watched quite a bit of stuff. I will have to give Iona a spin.

She was recently asked "How does she evoke the emotions, without getting too emotional herself?"
Her reply was very humble, it's difficult the first few times, then later, she can be a bit "numb", as long as she doesn't catch the eye of someone in the audience!

so, it's a power song. interesting echoes of Metalica that I can only imagine are deliberate.
(This is the case with lots of Tuomas, the poetic and abstract nature of his writing leaves me very little room to find traction. It would be like me trying to comment of the writing in Lord of the Rings!)

He changed up the original and added more as well, specifically for Floor being a mother.
Did not know that, new information. That's lovely. Thank you!
I love your story

And yes, Troy's geet-tar is very purdy indeed.

Thank you for sharing this story with me. I am very moved that you did so.
