Wow! I am so happy to stumble on this reaction to one of my favorite Rush songs. There are so many things I want to praise about your video, but to keep this short enough I will start by thanking you for sharing your personal "relationship" with this song.
You put into words many of the feelings I have about the lyrics and the music. This was very enjoyable to watch and "share" with you.
I can't wait to watch some of your other videos. I hope you have a successful trip and return better off for having made the sacrifice / journey.
Peace and best wishes to you.

Why keep your comments short when I so obviously can't keep ANYTHING I do short!?
      :) :)
Thank you for your kind words, and thank you to the almighty Algo for allowing you this stumble... I don't do ANY of the things I am supposed to do, so the algo is not often my friend! :)
The trip has been interesting so far, played some Poker good and bad, done some writing (good and bad) and am currently doing urgent repairs to my show after 'mistakes were made' and a key sub-plot was kinda ruined!
      But, we carry on.
I hope you will dip in and look at some other stuff, maybe even stuff you don't know - for me that is where the gold is often found...
Thanks for coming, thanks for staying, thanks for playing

I read somewhere a while ago in guitar magazine I think during the counter parts album, Alex was interviewed about bringing back the guitar prominence and cut back on keyboard sounds that he said the analog kids solo was the fastest guitar picking solo he has done to that date of the interview

It has always stood out to me as one of the most shredding things he ever did. Often he is more soaring (Like Steve Rothery) but with this he just ripped it to pieces.
One of my favourites, for sure
And when combined with this great lyric... Perfection.

Well said. Always that timeless reflection on the adolescent pull between childhood 'safety' and comfort of home, our family and the new life on the edge of his knowing but drawing him naturally away from 'home' to the wider world w/ peers and independence.

I have said no matter how the years have takin a tole on Geddy’s vocals I don’t think there is anyone else that can sing Neil’s lyrics like Geddy! I’ve said they were brought together. We are forever grateful for the incredible legacy these 3 amazing talented musicians are passing on.

      Very, very true.
Once you have heard a Geddy version of a lyric, it's hard to get that template out your head.
That said, I do like it when people take a Rush song and own it.
See, for instance, Jacob Moon's Subdivisions.
He does not TRY to be Geddy, he makes it his own... and that is for sure the key.
Only one Geddy (two if you count my since departed ginger cat, he was an OG Geddy too!)
Thanks again for playing in the sandpit with me

I am beginning to realise that, as much as anything, this is not about reaction, it's about unpacking my own response to words and music and the world even knowing that it is ONLY my own. I guess my hope is that the specifics of my world view resonate with the people that watch.
So far South Africa has been a wild ride, and I'm about to ride into a massive script battle to try and save the show I wrote from the people making it.

As I've stated in past reactions, I absolutely love and appreciate your lyrical breakdowns. I was waiting, however, for you to mention the musical aspect as it too adds to the storytelling, doesn't it? It's what makes Rush as a whole one of the greatest bands ever. It seems they intentionally composed the music to be full of energy and excitement during the lyrics, dropping down to a dreamy sort of synth backed rhythm during the chorus. Masterful composing by virtuoso musicians. I love this band so much! 😃🤘

But I also know I'm not super 'qualified' to talk music.
I figure usually you can SEE me loving the music!
But yes, I think as a prog rock boy, that compositional brilliance combined with them actually PLAYING it live to such a high standard was very much part of the appeal of Rush.

A while back someone described what Alex does as COMPOSITIONAL, as opposed to free flowing... So I once he has composed the solo, that is mostly the solo with, maybe a few flourishes and embellishments. I tend to feel this suits their work, usually, what is on the album feels like the most perfect form for a solo, so I like it when he nails it... La Villa is a perfect example of that. When he messes with the second solo 9is it monsters) I never feel like it's quite as good as the album... but that is also probably patter recognition, nostalgia and familiarity. One thing is for sure, in a band with arguably the best drummer and bass player of their genre and generation, Alex does NOT ever let the side down. he should be mentioned more alongside the other 'greats'.
