❖Caron Macchiato Cakes is on My Rigid Heddle Loom❖ #rigidheddle #caroncakes
I've woven with Macchiato Cakes before, but not for the channel, so when I saw new colorways I thought it would be a great time to get more! (Plus Boundless is the perfect Autumn colorway 🍂🍁) I've been seeing the Duet Boxy Top by Gist Yarn online, so I thought I'd try a top inspired by this one.

I was hopeful for this one because it looked so pretty in the cake. Im a neutrals kind of gal. But it just seemed too blocky, or jumpy with the transitions. It wasn't working.
I had high hopes too! It's amazing how different yarns can look woven up sometimes.
Beginner weaver here. May seem a silly question but what is the purpose of pick up sticks in the first place?
Not silly at all! I had no idea either when I first started. Pickup sticks help you to create patterns other than plain weave by creating floats in either the warp or the weft. Floor looms have multiple heddles, but we can only do 2, so pickup sticks basically act like extra heddles. I hope I explained that ok! 😊
@magpieandmolly Thanks. Appreciate your explanation. Have a great day!
I would love to see a little slower video of how you thread your heddles.
You know, I used to film more of the threading/warping, and I guess I've just gotten lazy. 😁 It is a great idea for me to do a video of the process in real - time, so thank you for the suggestion! In the meantime, here are some of my older videos where I show the threading. If you slow down the playback speed it helps too. ua-cam.com/video/4KQSksb9OXY/v-deo.htmlsi=3QnTtfuiDPTLVa19&t=43 ua-cam.com/video/Gr8_Bc854dI/v-deo.htmlsi=FHmolQ6C9YsVv4kc&t=51 ua-cam.com/video/1sRMSbeKMjw/v-deo.htmlsi=uce21Nn7AcX2akJL&t=52

You're very kind! 😊😊😊
Спасибо за замечательное объяснение❤😊
You're welcome! Thank you for watching! 😊
Спасибо за помощь в ткачестве❤
I'm so glad it was useful for you! 🙂
Can you try some of the super bulky yarns, such as WoolEase thick and quick or fleece type yarns weight #6?
I actually just bought Caron Spice Cakes, which is a #6. I've also got some Thick and Quick in my stash somewhere, I think. I've got about 5 yarns I'm trying to weave with and film so stay tuned and I'll work these in as soon as I can. 😊
Do you hemp stitch both ends of the scarf? New to your channel, lovely videos and great inspiration 😊
Yes, I almost always hem stitch my scarves. I love how it looks, plus I think it's kind of fun to do. :) Welcome to the channel! 😊
Thank you 😊
Love this! Thanks for posting.. I started weaving a couple months ago on. 15 inch rigid heddle loom
You can do a lot with small looms - this one is 16" and once you get the hang of double weave the possibilities are endless. 😊
Thank you so much - AT LAST I understand! Very clear videos which explained things in a way that beginners can easily follow. Can’t thank you enough.
I'm so glad they helped!! My hope is to help others avoid cutting failed attempts off the loom like I did. 😄
Omg… they’re beautiful. Now I need to make a trip to Joanns to pick up some <3
Thank you so much! 😊
That weaves up beautifully.
Thank you! I thought it looked really nice too.
I would suggest taking two or more of his recommended match ups and make the warp striped and then do the weft all one colorway.
He does a great job with his color matches, doesn't he?
I have to roll dice to pick a color-way. I absolutely love their yarn.
Same! It's just so hard to choose!! 😅
The fringe is wonderful but I wonder how much of a pain it will become since it is hanging around your areas.
It is a lot of yarn for sure! 😁
Great ideas 🎉. I’m new to weaving, just got a Rigid Heddle Loom. Thanks
You're going to love it! I have a feeling you're about to start a new obsession. 😉
I think the fringe is great just as is.
Thank you!
Such pretty colors! Huh, I've been wondering about weaving fabric for a poncho. I knit one for my godmother ages ago and she loved and wore it a lot then accidentally machine washed it to death 😥 She asked me for a new one and she is knitworthy for sure but it was SO boring to knit and took so long. But you're making me think maybe I can do this instead and add on a knit cowl neck. Hmmm!
Oh that's so sad! I'm also a knitter and one of the things I love about weaving is that it's so much faster. Granted, I do prefer knitting for small things and I LOVE doing cables etc, but big boring stockinette pieces just kill me. I'm intrigued by your idea. If you make it please let me know, I'd love to see pictures!
What if you braided the fringe? I kinda like it with the fringe long but I can see that it wouldn’t be practical. Either way it looks really pretty.
Thank you! I've never braided fringe, so that could be really great. You all have given me too many good suggestions - I might need to make a second one! 😄
Really cool! What is the length? Looks like the perfect size too
Thank you! The finished measurement is 12 inches from shoulder to hem, and 38" across.
Nice. I would Do a half damask edge.
Oooh! I hadn't even thought of that! GREAT suggestion! I'm curious to see how that would affect the drape. 🤔
I would cut a couple inches off and then twist it. I love it. Beautiful color way!!
I'm starting to think that's exactly the right way to go. Thank you! ☺️
Put a belt on and cinch it. It may look less bulky.
Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂
Beautiful. You are so talented. Love your videos. I've learned a lot. ❤
Thank you so much! I'm glad the videos are helpful. 😊
I like the fringe
Thanks for chiming in! I appreciate it. ☺️
I would twist the fringe to prevent it becoming a snarled mess. I've seen ponchos & similar with fringe and blanket scarves are still popular (or at least, I still like and wear mine).
That's a very good point about blanket scarves. This yarn actually looks really pretty twisted, so I'm probably worrying for nothing. (As usual!) Thanks for the input. 😊
As a poncho I would leave it. As a top I would somehow remove them. All in all it looks great! 👍🏻 my dream when I started to weave is to create garments. It’s always a work in progress and learning curve.
I like that idea. I'd like to try another one in a thinner yarn, so that would give me an opportunity to try a fringeless style. I know what you mean - I've made clothes from regular yardage, but not yet from handwovens. It's scarier but so rewarding. 😊
Late comment. The selvages are consistent and organic looking, they look good. I've bought that yarn for my knitting loom and got sucked into the color and price. I can't do acrylic. That particular one is not itchy, but to me acrylic is itchier than wool, has short airborn fibers that I breathe in and its like being allergic to it. The companies don't treat it properly. Whereas wool with polyester doesn't affect me at all, and its longer staple length, it doesn't go airborn the same way. Just be careful, a scarf is snuggled up close and you don't want any fly away tiny fibers in your lungs. Suspected that colorway was going to look beautiful woven.
Thanks for the heads up!
I've read three books and watched SO MANY videos on double weave and yours is the first and only one that made every single step perfectly clear. This is an amazing series, you should get an award! In case the universe fails to recognize you for it, here's my best: Official Double Weave Master Teacher #1 Award!
🥹🥹🥹 That's the most amazing thing to hear! I'm SO happy the videos helped you. It took me ages to figure it all out, and I was determined to help other weavers get there faster! Your comment really made my day, thank you so much for sharing. And, since I doubt the universe will come through on this one either, please accept the Hand Down Best UA-cam Comment Award! 🥳🥳🥳
from Gerry- I love it when 1 cake will do. This is really beautiful. Thanks and God bless.
Thank you, Gerry! I'm so glad you liked it. 😊
VERY clever - thank you!
I'm glad you liked it! 😊
I'm so sorry!! I thought they were gorgeous 😍 Is there nothing to be done to soften them up? It would be worth it!!
I honestly don't know. I finished them by soaking in wool wash, laying flat to dry, and just a gently steam to unwrinkle. I was so tired of messing with them by the time it was all done I just stuck them in my cabinet, but at some point I might get them out and see what I can do. I also had a couple people suggest using them as table runners which I think is an excellent idea! 😊
Hey, it could make a really nice table runner. Never met a table that complained of itchy fabric.
Thankfully, I haven't either! Someone in my Ravelry group had the same suggestion and I really think I'm going to try it. Nothing to lose, right?
It's beautiful and well worth the effort❤
Thank you so much 😀
The colours are nice! Seem to drape well too. Such a shame when the warp sticks and sticks and takes all the fun out of weaving. You just want it over. I have several scarves that are either itchy or turned out bleh and now sit in a box but I think I will turn them into bags thanks to your inspiring videos! Thank you.
You aren't kidding. I couldn't wait for it to be finished! I'm happy to hear you might try to make some bags. One of these days I want to work out a pattern for turning a scarf into a bag with minimal cutting. My list of projects keeps getting longer! 😁
Did you wash it? it looks right off the loom.
I forgot to add that info to the description. I soaked it in Eucalan, laid flat to dry, then steamed with the iron.
What a great review! Thanks for showing so much of the process. And great tip for clearing the shed with pickup sticks, I’ll have to remember that.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Haha, your face says it all. That sucks to spend all that time on something and not like it. It looks pretty though.
I'm not even sure I'd want to sell it at a market, though I guess as long as they try it on first it would be OK. 😄
@@magpieandmolly yeah there may be some people that don’t mind it.
I have the same problem with animal fibres. If I have crocheted a sweater with wool/angora, II wear it over a long sleeve T-shirt so it isn't so itchy. I'm surprised the fabric you made doesn't have more of a halo appearance from the mohair ...at least its hard to tell on my computer. Thanks for sharing your hard work! :0)
Maybe weaving on a more open sett would help the halo appear. I know historically some cultures would brush the fabric with combs or teasels (a type of thistle, I believe) to raise the nap. But if you don't enjoy the blend, it's not worth trying again. I like my fine wools and tend to avoid mohair, either in spinning or crochet projects.
It occurred to me later that a hat or maybe gloves would've been a better project for this yarn so it isn't too close to the skin? I can normally wear wool with no problems but this yarn just didn't agree with me. 😆
Oh that's so interesting!
thanks for the tutorial, and I LOVE your needle!
Thank you! It really is beautiful. 😊
Definitely springy!
🌷🌼😊🌼🌷
Hello. I find your vidéos very intéressant. It lets us know about yarn we see all the time. It is fun to see the results also. I was wondering do you warp one ball and weave with another ball. And how long is the warp and what reed you use . Thank you.
Welcome to the channel! For this yarn, I warped with one whole skein plus just a little of the second skein, and then used the rest for the weft. The warp was 56" (1.4m) and I used an 8 dent reed. ☺️
@@magpieandmolly thank you very much
I got recommended this video a few days ago and have spent the time since blazing through the rest of your content. I love to see what you're making and creative ways to use and combine yarn! I just got into rigid heddle weaving last week and I've dived all the way in since. I also thrift lots of yarn so using up bits and pieces is always a fun challenge!
I'm so happy you found the channel! Weaving is so much fun, but I felt really overwhelmed when I started, and I hope I can help other weavers figure out what they want to make. It's funny you mention thrifted yarn because one of the projects in my to-do list is a bag made of second hand yarn! Hopefully I'll get to it soon. 😁
May I send you a picture of a triangle scarf I made with the Halloween yarn ? Do you have an email address?
Absolutely! It's contact@magpieandmolly.com
Thank you very much for your warm, realistic videos sharing your amazing talent. I was wondering what is your process to adjust your panels for blankets if they are slightly different lengths when you take them off the loom... or you haven't run into that?
Thank you for the amazing compliment! To answer your question, I don't have a tried and true system yet, and tend to just wing it without planning, which isn't a great idea! I see weavers recommending a measuring tape or measured piece of yarn to make them all the same length, and I keep meaning to do that but still haven't yet. 🤦♀️ So what I've actually done is to hemstitch the first panel at both ends. On all the other panels I weave until I'm out of yarn and just do a few picks of scrap yarn instead of hemstitching. Then, when I'm crocheting them together, I start at the hemstitched ends, crochet until I get to the same length as the first panel, then hemstitch the new panel at the same spot. It really isn't a great system, but hey, sometimes I do things the hard way! 😆
@@magpieandmolly Thanks for the steps. Opens up my projects to Throws & Blankets now🥰
They all look amazing- the Vamp is amazing!
Thank you! I'm still hoping to get my hands on more Vamp! 😁
