Why is India Building a $6BN Giant Barrier?
Why is India spending billions to build a massive barrier on the Godavari River? Known as the Polavaram Project, this $6BN engineering marvel is designed to solve critical issues in water management, irrigation, and energy supply. Stretching over 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles), the Polavaram Dam is one of the longest dams in the world and a transformative project for the state of Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
In this video, we dive deep into the history, construction, and impact of the Polavaram Project. From its initial concept in 1941 to the modern engineering feats it showcases today, we’ll explore how this massive barrier aims to irrigate over 719,000 acres of farmland, generate 960 MW of clean energy, and revolutionize water management in southern India. But with challenges like the displacement of thousands of families, ecological concerns, and political hurdles, the project’s journey has been anything but smooth.
Join us as we compare Polavaram to other iconic water projects, like the Hoover Dam and China’s Three Gorges Dam, and uncover what makes this project so significant.
What do you think? Will the Polavaram Dam finally become a reality in the next five years? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

For god sake don't use Stereotypical Bg music !!
Your coverage is very good. The dam & spillway part is "not on the river course" as is the case with other dams. This spillway part is between two hills on right bank of the river, The main course of the river is blocked by upper & lower coffer dams, in fact. 82 (hydraulically operated) spillway gates block/allow the water flow (a new course), downstream.

@joze8722 If it is meant to be a joke, Ha Ha Ha !!
Chinese technology and infrastructure are amazing im starting to like china now as a country. 😄
Why is the sound only coming out the left side of the microphone 😢
chinese engineering , amazing marvel !!!
A ship lift saves energy because the total weight on the lift remains constant regardless of the size or number of ships it carries.(This is due to the principle of buoyancy: the water displaced by the ship equals its weight, so the combined weight of the ship and water remains consistent.) This allows the counterbalance system to function efficiently with a fixed weight. In theory, even a small additional weight on one side (e.g., 1 kilogram) could cause the lift to move up or down.t.
“Canada‘s second busiest transit network after Montreal” Really??? I don’t think so.
The water is so brown because everyone poops in the water.
Its flood water from a vast catchment area (includes lacs of hectares of forest) carrying lots of silt, gives a peculiar brown colour. The water discharge is very huge, goes up to 20 lac cusecs per second at its peak flooding.
@Whitehorse_crimefighter Oh! You eat your poop is it?
are the canal going to be navicable how much more expensive would navagableness be.
@alexisdespland4939 The canals are not (meant to be) navigable.
Yes it will be completed
No, not in coming 5yrs under prsnt govt
it will completed next 3 years
Villiers Island will become an exclusive enclave for the very wealthy and a few favoured folk in ‘subsidy housing (similar to the folk on the Toronto Islands). In the meantime the need for parkland will become crucial and any parkland in the port lands area will be exclusive for Villiers Island residents. The entire new port lands should be left for park lands….there are myriad other places for housing. This whole housing needs at Villiers Island is a scam!
Can you please make video about worlds largest renewable energy storage plant in Andhra Pradesh pinnapuram .

It's a great improvement for not just for the Olympics but for the city for many years to come. Here's 3 rail projects should be accelerated for the 2028 Olympics The East San Frando Line 2031 is way too long for a small project there's no reason to intentionally delay the project phase 2 would be instead be build as an extension in 2031. The Southeast Citygate Line both phase 1 and phase 2, that would be the largest and most ambitious of the 3, also the most expensive but it's worth it. The E Line extension to Whittier is another project to be finished by the Olympics, there's no reason to split it into two phases. It would be another big project to be done. The K line extension to Torrance and the Sepulveda Line are too ambitious and complicated to be finished by 2028, they will be finished in a later time ( unless they are also accelerated).
Very interesting and well documented report. Thanks for using both measurement systems! And hop, I subscribed to your UA-cam channel. 😎 *** Reportage très intéressant et bien documenté. Merci d'avoir utilisé les deux systèmes de mesure ! Et hop, je me suis abonné à votre chaîne UA-cam. 😎
Netizens blame 3 Gorges Dam massive flooding. Technicians claim dam crack leaks.
I think India needs to check the viability of floatovoltaics systems over the two major tunnels. This will reduce evaporation and help in generating additional solar energy. The viability of such systems can be studied even over the main reservoir of the dam.

Hoo man! That background music is soo annoying 🤦🏻
Say that on western music bgm . It's traditional and cultural music played on native instruments. So shove your colonial slavery mindset up your darkest hole.
Im from Los Angeles, and I fly about 15 times a year out of LAX. All the footage used in this video is old. Other Terminals were added a couple years back pretty much fixed everything already. All the new things that are being done are for the new train and rental car area. The airport is getting upgraded but its not hard to get in or out and theres really not much traffic or waiting at all. Video is creator is ill inmofrmed.
LAs Metro Red Line should be extended to Burbank Airport by popping above ground using an elevated guide ways
I hope they use it to build buildings so they stop collect phone calling.
It's a price for you caucasian people for making colonies and spreading proverty among native
How long will it last?
@ohcho-fg4co The previous dam downstream built in 1850 was to last 100 years, but it is as good now as it was in 1859. By that reckoning this dam should last a century at least. May be the power generation part needs to be replaced, in stages.
I really love LA. It is one of the greatest cities in the world with so many different areas and cultures, you pretty much have the whole world in one city. I really hope that these initiatives are not only for the Olympics, but start a bigger revolution down the line to get more transit. I am in LA and greater LA area every couple of month, but was actually shocked about LAX. 3 month ago, I arrived from Las Vegas and rented a car. I was shocked that you go to a pick up line for buses to get to my specific rental car company, not yet a rental car center, which I assume will happen once the people mover is finished. Next was the somewhat sketchy area where the rental car company was located. However, even worse was just like 2 month ago when I went on an international flight and had to transfer in LAX. The services offered there were just bad. It was later in the evening, and I had to find/go to a Habit Burger grill that was horrible. The number of shops and restaurants, also affordable ones, are nowhere close to international competition. Over the last 12 month, I went through Airports in Madrid, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Copenhagen... to just name a few, and each one of these were on another level compared to LAX. I really hope that the transformation will elevate LAX to what it should be. LA, you can do it;-)
This again shows why inflation calculators are worthless: The Hoover Dam's inflation adjusted cost of $860 million is low by at least a factor of 50X to 100X today's cost to build.
Your argument is as outlandish as inflation calculators are conservative. "Worthless" is pure hyperbole. And the idea that the Hoover Dam would cost twice as much as Boston's Big Dig and its chronic price overruns is laughable.
@@NOXStellans The dam being built for $6 billion generates half the electricity of Hoover, and stores 1/20th the water. The average wage for construction in India is $2/hr., generously. In the US, $90, with benefits. This is also done with disasters of the past. Many, if they occurred today, would easily be trillion-dollar events - but standard inflation calculators are used, instead. This is done with purpose. It confirms recency bias in people. Take the 1927 Mississippi flood: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles inundated in depths of up to 30 feet over the course of several months in early 1927. The cost of the damage has been estimated to be between $246 million and $1 billion, which ranges from $4.2-$17.3 billion in 2023 dollars. Now, using estimates in today's dollars: Flooding peaked in the Lower Mississippi River near Mound Landing, Mississippi, and Arkansas City, Arkansas, and broke levees along the river in at least 145 places. The water flooded more than 27,000 square miles of land and left more than 700,000 people homeless. Monetary damages due to flooding reached approximately $1 billion. If the event were to have occurred in 2023, the damages would total around $1.38 trillion to $1.48 trillion.
Let's hope it is completed soon
With the cost of Palestine's lives ?
No mention of the Valley to Westwood or even LAX Metro line for the 405? That's not a 2028 goal but should be one of the biggest priorities to pick up the pace on for Metro.
It’s physics a “principle of buoyancy “
Can J Line Hover ?
WOVEN CITY 💪💙
Yo that looks like Fontaine
As long as Newscum Has anything to do with it it will never happen and he will steal the money just like he did the train program
Car free LA? 😂 Walkable City? 😂 Nope.
Good video but you also need to cover GO transit expansion .
They used similar combined ideas that Panama Canal, Panama; Falkirk Wheel, Scotland; and Alt Elbe Tunnel, Germany have been using since last century.
The Chinese designed that?
Yes, the Chinese designed and built the Goupitan shiplift, a complex system consisting of three interconnected lifts and water channels. Thanks for watching it!
I cannot watch further because another out of touch video. Budget is a major issue. Assuming 42 billion dollars can be collected, all those stupid projects are built by 2028, LA is still car city. LA residents love cars even the rail supporters. For the past 30 years, LA has built you need car rail systems. Lots of rail stations in traffic congest population heavily real estate expensive neighborhood has free parking lots. Other new projects will come with bigger parking lots at each station. Regional connector is a useless project. Even Karen Bass that she had to hire thousands more of bus drivers n acquire buses to make it happen. Lack of bus connection at each station is major problem. LA politicians, transit management, transit advocates don't care because people can drive from n to stations. Then Karen Bass n selfish train lovers believe those stupid projects got built by 2028 will make LA city car free. Dream on. Thats just LA, LA suburbs, forget. Train lovers have worked hard to make sure LA is not car free. You are one of them.
Chinese Engineering... an oxymoron
They won't need all this soon, when they run out of people to operate it.
i live in Chicago and still get very mad at the assholes that pushed Lucas and his museum away from the city because the city badly needed it. The city needs new things constantly to help preserve and keep up with its staus as one of the best cities in the country. Unfortunately, we have no big visionaries or people who want to see the city reach its ultimate potential, in which we still havent. Los Angeles already has enough going for it, and again, I wish it was built here in Chicago.
what only benefits china and its people dont matter to anyone outside that country. people thatll never go to china dont give a fuck what china has. theres nothing interesting or important about china at all.
That Goupitan lift was incredibly cheap to make. Wow. I thought the cost was going to be in the billions.
Where do you get your information from? LAX is NOWHERE NEAR as busy as Ohare. 🤡 Ohare peaks at 140 flights in a single hour daily while LAX is 6x less......
Define "total failure". City of Chicago:
Americans would accuse China of stealing their technology but no where in America is technology being used.
