- Why is India spending billions to build a massive barrier on the Godavari River? Known as the Polavaram Project, this $6BN engineering marvel is designed to solve critical issues in water management, irrigation, and energy supply. Stretching over 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles), the Polavaram Dam is one of the longest dams in the world and a transformative project for the state of Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
In this video, we dive deep into the history, construction, and impact of the Polavaram Project. From its initial concept in 1941 to the modern engineering feats it showcases today, we’ll explore how this massive barrier aims to irrigate over 719,000 acres of farmland, generate 960 MW of clean energy, and revolutionize water management in southern India. But with challenges like the displacement of thousands of families, ecological concerns, and political hurdles, the project’s journey has been anything but smooth.
Join us as we compare Polavaram to other iconic water projects, like the Hoover Dam and China’s Three Gorges Dam, and uncover what makes this project so significant.
What do you think? Will the Polavaram Dam finally become a reality in the next five years? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Try to get the pronunciation of Polavaram right as it has been mentioned more than 50 times I guess, in the most annoying way (disrespectful of the name and culture). Same goes for Godavari. Few minutes with the locals, coming down from the ivory towers, would have helped (and given a hint of the long history of the land and how it got the name too).
As mentioned in another comment remove Jagan Mohan reddys photo and remove the credits for him. He has opposed and delayed this project. Having him in the video is like having hitler promote jewish welfare.
Polavaram project is bigger than three gorges dam, Polavaram has 2 guineas world record... and remove jagan for this video... he is worthless...
@@jagathmithya719 Thanks for pointing that out! We get it-pronouncing names properly is so important, especially when they carry so much history and meaning. We’ll definitely take more time to get it right in the future. Thanks again for watching and helping us improve!"
Please include a list of specs/stats, regarding this project in the comment section and pin it so we can see it a glance.
While your pronunciations were a bit funny 🤓, I really do appreciate your efforts to educate me about this project. 🙂
It's near my town , to get this done , govt officials evacuated 36 villages....... it's called the dream project of Andhra Pradesh ❤
Did the people get the deserved compensation for that?
No...
@@rns10 The peoples right to a future where the quality of life has overwritten the inconvenience in the present negates the idea of anything deserved. They have the right to honestly being assisted in being relocated. They deserve nothing more.
@@oraculum3395 Relocated how.
What I understand as definition of relocation is give them compensation for their land, provide them good govt funded building that should at least last 20 years.
The building should be made with good materials so it doesnt rot itself in 5 years.
This is not 15th century where we can neglect people's need because we dont have resources or innovative solutions.
People always comes first. If you are saying lets move these 2000 people, so 1 lakh people could get better life, but you ruined 2000 people's lives.
We dont need to be in moral dilemma. Govt has the funding. All they have to do is be honest and do the work honestly. But we all know there is nothing like that in this world. The contractor gets the money to complete project by any means, doesnt matter who suffers, whose land they occupied forcefully.
The Laguna Dam in Yuma was the first dam constructed on the Colorado River in the early 1900s. The US engineers travelled to India for design ideas given the unstable soil conditions and knowing India's engineers had successfully tackled a similar situation. In the end, they used the design present in India's Okla Weir across the Jumna River.
Wow, learned something new
Cheers

Well that's due to political issues, construction was stopped for many decades. Hence it doesn't count into construction period

This again shows why inflation calculators are worthless: The Hoover Dam's inflation adjusted cost of $860 million is low by at least a factor of 50X to 100X today's cost to build.
Your argument is as outlandish as inflation calculators are conservative. "Worthless" is pure hyperbole. And the idea that the Hoover Dam would cost twice as much as Boston's Big Dig and its chronic price overruns is laughable.
@@NOXStellans
The dam being built for $6 billion generates half the electricity of Hoover, and stores 1/20th the water. The average wage for construction in India is $2/hr., generously. In the US, $90, with benefits.
This is also done with disasters of the past. Many, if they occurred today, would easily be trillion-dollar events - but standard inflation calculators are used, instead. This is done with purpose. It confirms recency bias in people. Take the 1927 Mississippi flood:
The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles inundated in depths of up to 30 feet over the course of several months in early 1927. The cost of the damage has been estimated to be between $246 million and $1 billion, which ranges from $4.2-$17.3 billion in 2023 dollars.
Now, using estimates in today's dollars:
Flooding peaked in the Lower Mississippi River near Mound Landing, Mississippi, and Arkansas City, Arkansas, and broke levees along the river in at least 145 places. The water flooded more than 27,000 square miles of land and left more than 700,000 people homeless. Monetary damages due to flooding reached approximately $1 billion. If the event were to have occurred in 2023, the damages would total around $1.38 trillion to $1.48 trillion.
It's delayed due to local state politics
Well explained.. to be short, Polavaram project is not just a dam, it's a 400km canal, even more subcanals with water uplifting systems..
I live 50km away from polavaram dam, and it's canal passes through my town.. completed almost 10 years ago. Even before completion of the project, the canal supplied water, always full of water and enriched lakhs of acres of farms nearby. It is just mind-blowing what humans can do.
Also, all thanks to the river godavari.. Godavari is always full, usually it's water overflows from existing dams and fresh water gets wasted to Ocean.. polavaram will help in fixing that.
I’m sure India does what they need to do for their Beautiful Country!!!😊
No.

Lovely soothing music! Makes the anger swelling up because of corruption calm down
Let's hope it is completed soon
Only right and left canals are started in 2004, nothing started at dam site till 2014. From 2012-2014 only earth related works done at dam site, 68% completed by 2019 and only 3% in last 5yrs. Delay due to contractor change in 2019 for no valid reason and no works done for 1.5yrs to 2yrs which collapsed some structures at dam site.
Just go and look the govt how were power that time. That make more sense, why dam didn't complete since. More then decades
Thank you for the clarification. This video is good but misses nuances
Who built spillway?
I think India needs to check the viability of floatovoltaics systems over the two major tunnels. This will reduce evaporation and help in generating additional solar energy. The viability of such systems can be studied even over the main reservoir of the dam.

Good choice of music to enhance the magnificence of India .
Beats the loud, canned generic you-tube noise.
One of the longest dams, 3.7 km in length, in the world and at a height of 45 mts power generation capacity of 980 MW (1 GW) sounds so low.
It should be atleast 2000MW (2 GW)
I'll put the comparisons below with itaipu dam.
Dam => Itaipu : Polavaram
Height=> 196 mts : 45 mts
Ratio => 4.3 : 1
Length => 7.9 km : 3.7km
Ratio => 2.1 : 1
Energy=> 14 GW : 1GW
Ratio => 14 : 1
I mean the energy ratio also should be around 4 : 1 which gets us the capacity of around 3 GW and conservatively 2 GW

Correction:
Dam is being constructed by Indian state "Andhra Pradesh" but not Government of India at earlier stages, later with assistance of Central government as compensation for AP division
Major reason for delay is
1. Andhra state got divided into two states, in which Andhra lost Capital city (financial power)to the new state
2. Politics
3. Part of Submerged area comes under neighbouring state,.... Court case from them
4. Environmental group court cases
After division is state, as a consolation,
Government of India agreed to help Andhra state but due to politics Dam have been delayed

The problem is the maintenance and constant education of personal. ITAIPU has got it and a huge fish cultivation and harvest. This important aspect has not been told here. And does India build the Kaplan turbines ? If not how to insure technical maintenance? Photovoltaic is also an issue. Covering the whole area with photovoltaic brings electric energy and cools the water and atmosphere. Another problem is the slow erection thus creating constant technical challenges. Hopefully India uses the wide experience of the ITAIPU technicians.
