- China has embarked on its most ambitious hydropower project yet-the Yarlung Tsangpo Dam. Built in the dramatic Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, this record-breaking dam aims to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, three times more than the iconic Three Gorges Dam. But this mega-dam isn’t just about renewable energy-it’s reshaping geopolitics.
What do you think about China’s decision to build the world’s largest dam? Let us know in the comments below!

They’re the definition of efficiency. No shit talk. Although sometimes it’s stupid without much thought before doing it. But gotta respect that.
The voice-over repeatedly mentions 'Dam', but is it not just tunnels with turbines???
Will still need something to raise water height to get the appropriate hydraulic head and clear the tunnels from debris that may be travelling along the river bottom/top
Also may have enough of a reservoir to smooth out the flow how much is to raise the height.
Don't forget that it's gonna be 3 times as large as the 3 Gorges dam.
@@4423422 no that’s just a surge tank
China is building a dam on its own territory, so not controversial at all..China should/will do what is good for China, and people who are crying just keep crying
Both India and Bangladesh currently get 80% of their water needs from rainfall which falls within their geographical areas. It is incorrect to be blaming China which has not caused any negative conditions to date (January 2025). They have spent the last 10 years studying the geology, climate, environmental engineering requirements and the needs of their local population.
China has recently reported $US 1Trillion equivalent trade surplus for 2024
Most likely they will use this to internally finance the project.
Both India and Bangladesh need to face reality; engage in discussions to share the water and electricity to be generated from this project, instead of opposing it. 60 GW of new electrical power is no laughing matter to be ignored. It could easily spark major industrial development in both countries.
Bangladesh is a delta.without water from ganga and bramaputra( yarlung zangpu) coastal region of bangladesh has no drinking water.bramaputra provides 65% of fresh water for bangladesh( directly and indirectly)
In Tibet, is it not?
Why Tibet ?
🇨🇳👍👏 Clean Energy 👏👍🇨🇳
Farewell my shifu!😂😂
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yeah, the largest dam in an earthquake prone region ehen their smaller ones are left in pieces after a swarm of quakes in the last few days? Great idea lmfao
Engineers know better than average youtubers
This video uses old information. In 2023 China generated 1,140 TWh electricity from hydro out of a total of 9,220 TWh nationally. Thus Hydro represents a mere 12.3% and not 20% as claimed.
Also at $137 billion for 60GW that is $2,283/kW for the Medok hydro in Xijang, which received approval recently, is fairly typical cost according to the historical data which are provided below
China Three Gorges Dam 三峡大坝 22,500MW world’s 1st largest 2003 price($1,411/kw)
China Baihetan hydro 白鹤滩大坝 constructed in 2017 World’s 2nd largest ($1,973/kw)
Brazil Itaipu 14,000MW hydro electric in 1974 (World 3rd largest hydro($1,400/kw)
China Xiluodu Dam 溪洛渡大坝 13,860 MW World 4th largest ($880/kW)
China Yangqu dam羊曲水電站 1,200MW for 17.06 billion yuan in 2024 ( $1960/kW)
Honduras Patuca III hydro 104MW in 2015($3,336/kw)
Tanzania Julius Nyerere hydro 2115MW in 2019 ($1,371/kw)
Congo Imboulou hydro 120MW inaugurated on 7 May 2011 (3,141/kW)
Congo Caculo Cabaca hydro 2,070MW due 2024 ($2,173/kW)
Indonesia Kayan Cascade project in 2023 due 2023(US$1,888/kW)
Canada Site C dam hydro due to complete in 2025 ($10,909/kW)

Mini Hydro per MW common guide on cost ($2,000/kW)
Merseyside barrage 1,200MW estimated cost $3,600/kW
China proposed Medok hydro in Xijang 60MW for 1 trillion yuan ($2,283/kw)
'Ambitious' here defined as idiotic and dangerous
