Animal Spotlight | Porcupine
Porcupines are probably one of the most infamous animals out there with their tens of thousands of barbed, pointy quills. But what are porcupines like in the wild? What do they eat? What could possibly eat them? Why are they such good swimmers? I go over all of this and more in this week's spotlight, and the first ever one about a mammal on the channel!
Thank you to my friend Mal from Trailside Museum and Zoo for the footage!

Just got a Hognose yesterday... didnt do much research beforehand but we are getting all the info we can! have almost everything for his habitat. just waiting on amazon to ship the thermostat before we really use the heat pad. I am worried that his cage right now is too cold and we have a lamp but I dont think its enough so the next two days are going to be rough.. We were told our baby is not even 2 months old yet. so he's super tiny and im worried that the stress of moving from the store to us and then to my wife's classroom is going to be too much. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Oh also wear gloves when feeding and recommend that you use tongs as well. Helps keep your baby from associating your hand with food. And yes they are dramatic asf when you try to pick them up 🤣

The sad thing about these is that they will probably end up like the Emperor Scorpions in a decade or so, very rare and expensive due to overcollection. It is important that we don't make the same mistakes and try to actively breed them.

The first Reptile I ever ordered online was for my birthday last year. I had to wait a few weeks for her to ship since my birthday was in December and was so excited when I was able to pick her up and unbox her. She was an albino stripe het anery that I got from morph market. She was so tiny but surprisingly long. She was so beautiful with sherbet and bright orange and yellows. I had her in a critter keeper to start but that was a big mistake as she escaped after only having her for a little over a month 😢 I cried so much when I realized she was gone I tore apart my apartment and tried all the ways online for finding your lost snake and I never did find her again. I was so upset for a very long time. It's now been just over a year since she disappeared and I still want a new animal. I can only have one that can live in a 40 gallon enclosure though so that limits me on the kind of animal I can get. I'm thinking about an albino African house snake or rosy boa.

14:46: No. UVB CFL's actually do give off a decent amount of UVB. It's not comparable to the peak output given of by mercury vapor bulbs, but it's pretty omnidirectional (unlike Hg bulbs) and, when coupled with a good reflector to concentrate the light onto a baking spot, can exceed a Ferguson zone of 2 at a distance of about 10 in. This should be adequate for most baking species. Definitely get the highest output CFL you can, but they're completely serviceable for 120 gal or small (assuming the animal comes to the baking site frequently). Also, if you have more than a couple bulbs running at any given time, get a UVB meter or Ferguson index meter (i.e. a UVB meter with filters that mainly pass the short wave UVA and long wave UVB responsible for D3 synthesis). You'll find that most (but not all) brands continue outputting at least 50% of their starting UVB for well over a year which can save on bulb replacement cost. Do stay away from LED UVB. As of 2022 when I last investigated this, the bulbs I got started off almost dangerously bright, but degraded to almost undetectable levels in the span of 2 to 4 months.

I have two corn snakes. Both were rescues. My first one is a 5 year old female Named Voodoo, she is a regular amel. She wasn't fed nearly enough while she was growing, and she ended up very stunted because of it. She is only a little over 2 feet long, and a skinny little thing. She is the tiniest adult corn snake I have ever seen, but she has so much personality! She is super active and gets excited when I come into the pet room and comes right out of her hide to watch what I'm doing in hopes that. My other corn snake is a MASSIVE male butter morph that I named PoppaCorn. His age is unknown but I am apparently his 4th or possibly 5th owner so I assume he has to be an older fella. He is by far the biggest corn snake I have ever seen at just over 6 feet long, and he is thick too. When I rescued him from a friend's brother, he was extremely obese (almost like a ball python!), covered with layers of stuck shed, had a bad respiratory infection, and his barren, empty enclosure hadn't been cleaned in what looked like a year or more. It was covered in poop and mold, it smelled sooooo bad. They would just pile on more wood shavings over the poop instead of cleaning it up. It also stunk of cigarette smoke. I couldn't believe it. Just disgusting. The poor guys heat lamp was way too hot for him too and there was nowhere in the enclosure he could go to escape the heat. It was 108 degrees in the intended basking spot. I was so grateful to be able to get him out of that situation. I have had him for about 2 years now and he is doing fantastic and loved very much. I have gotten his weight to a much healthier place, and he always has perfect sheds now and no more RI. He is a big sweetheart and really loves being with people. He would just hang out around my shoulders and in my hair all the time if I would let him. Corn snakes are such good-natured creatures. Even after poor treatment from humans they are very accepting and trusting of humans. They are such awesome and beautiful snakes. Sorry for the super long comment. I wanted to tell my snakes' stories. :)
