I know I'm three years late, but this video was super helpful and reassuring. I just got my first baby in October, and he hasn't shown any interest in eating and I've been very concerned, so thanks for giving me an eta to work with so I know when I need to get help if this issue persists. Researching online was giving me hardcore anxiety because everyone seemed to have a different opinion on how they should be fed, so I'm glad to finally have some input from a professional.
I must say, this is the most informative video I've ever seen on hognoses. Literally covered everything I could think of. Wish I would've seen this when I first started getting into hogs. I will definitely recommend this video to others in the future!
I got a hognose snake two days ago. I've had a corn snake for five years now. As I am a fan of Snkae Discovery, I knew fair amout about them specifically. But I am just cheking what other say about them. BTW my hognose snake is axanthic super conda. Soooo cute.
This video was very helpful for me as a complete beginner doing research before buying my first snake. Some of the stuff I've seen/read about hognose snakes before made me feel like I'd have to 1) do everything in my power to make the snake eat; 2) start handling the snake right away & often to ensure it's used to handling... I'm glad I kept looking for more information and found this video. I definitely feel like researching more before I buy my snake, but this vid gave me a sense of solid footing that I really needed, covering basically every question a newbie like me might have. @@unchartedwild2166 I love Western Hognose Snakes with all of my heart and soul! Thank you so much man for making a full in depth care video on western hogs. This is a rare video on youtube.
This is my third care guide just this morning 😂 I want to get a male western hognose but making sure I have everything correctly set up before I get one
We just bought one at a reptile show. Great video & looking for more to learn as much as we can! It is for my granddaughter's 12th birthday coming up & she loves this snake! I love that it won't get huge & try to kill us....lol. The breeder was very informative, but you can't learn too much. Thank you!
Holy crap dude this has been so helpful. I’ve been on the fence whether or not I should get a baby or adult/slightly older hognose. There’s the “I grew up with this boy” attitude with getting a baby and taking care of it into adulthood, but it’ll also be my first snake so I’m not too sure if I would want to deal with the finicky part of a baby.
I got an 8mo off Morph Market in 2022 and I haven't had any issues with him. He does go off food for a month or 2 each year, and that scared me when I first got him, but I offer him food on a regular schedule and he's been growing fine. Probably should have gone up to fuzzies earlier, but no issues from him. He's a joy 🥰 also living near the ocean in SoCal so humidity is rarely below 40% (usually 40-50%, sometimes 60%) and he's never been sick, but I do run an air purifier 24/7 since I have a bunch of houseplants in my room too. Probably wouldn't try hognoses if I was in Louisiana or something tho.
This video was one of the most helpful I’ve watched I’ve been planning on getting a hog nose for a while and I have a ball python but there care guides are very diffrent from what I’ve seen
Absolutely amazing video and super interesting to hear the thing about putting them in a separate container to feed is a myth. I've had 2 ball pythons before and definitely agree they never confused me for food feeding them in the cage once.
im getting my hoggie next week and her enclosure is in my living room, giving her the perfect amount of light (shes having under tank heating) with aspen bedding and ive gotten her some really cute hides!! theres so many cute ones you can get
I agree with some other comments here. Been really considering a hognose and this video has been the most thorough and informative about the snake. All summed up in this video.
I think paper bedding (the one for burrowing animals, it's usually in the rodent section) is best for holding burrows, and you can get different colors if you want.
Oh also wear gloves when feeding and recommend that you use tongs as well. Helps keep your baby from associating your hand with food. And yes they are dramatic asf when you try to pick them up 🤣
Thank you so much. I have been wanting and researching hognose snakes for a while. My husband and I used to have all kinds of snakes...some really BIG constrictors. I now live alone and really miss the snakes. I have recently received a few hundred dollars that I did not expect and is not budgeted for anything else. I believe I will invest in a hognose with a good setup 🙂
There’s this substrate by this company called biodude and he makes bioactive substrate for hognoses I love it! It also never smells and is easy to spot clean
I do a mix of aspen , reptisoil , and sand. Jake loves it because he can tunnel and he can still use his hide cave. His tunnel actually has a hole that is under his cave..quick escape.. if needed lol..to run from me 😂
Wow, this is the absolutely best Hognose care video I've come across yet. So many questions Ive had from watching other videos have been answered in this video. I have only one question at this point... prolly a dumb question but I obviously leave the heat lamp on thru the night correct??
Just found an Eastern Hognose today while mowing my grass (In MD)! I’m not a snake guy, and I assure you neither is my Wife, but I don’t kill ANYTHING.....no worries there, so I relocated the hognose snake about three miles away into another wooded area. I am here just researching to learn more about the species should I come across more of them....
Just got a Hognose yesterday... didnt do much research beforehand but we are getting all the info we can! have almost everything for his habitat. just waiting on amazon to ship the thermostat before we really use the heat pad. I am worried that his cage right now is too cold and we have a lamp but I dont think its enough so the next two days are going to be rough.. We were told our baby is not even 2 months old yet. so he's super tiny and im worried that the stress of moving from the store to us and then to my wife's classroom is going to be too much. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Should I use both a lamp and an under tank heating pad, or is it one or the other? Also, if it’s both, should the lamp and the pad both be on the “hot” side of the tank? Any help would be appreciated!
Include more pictures of what you are referring to if you happen to do any updates to this video. I enjoyed your video, very informative and I liked the organization of the timestamps. Convenient for skipping back and forth.
Tip: hognoses need a SHALLOW water dish. They CAN drown themselves! My hognose did this to me this year and thank god I caught him in time. The emergency vet visit was a pretty penny but we had him on meds to prevent respitory issues. Thankfully he did not get sick or totally drown but after some research THIS IS A REAL THING😅
Awesome video. You talked about not getting them in a separate tank or container. Do you worry about substrate impaction when feeding them in their enclosure?
Can i use a regular heat bulb? Or do I have to use a heat mat? Should I use a UVB bulb? How long should I keep either on? can I turn off the light at night and turn it on in the morning? I Iive in a pretty warm house that doesn't get too cold so it shouldn't get really cold at night. I own a ten gallon glass tank, is it possible to use that for a male? How often should I feed a male? Feamal? Thank you! This is a really awesome video that has really great info!
VERY informative! 👍🏻 Question: So your new snake is doing well on thawed pinkies, when you happen across a little frog 🐸 in the garden. Is it ok to offer him said frog for dinner? Thanks.
Definitely not, that frog could have hopped over from the neighbor's yard where they used pesticides, it could be sick with a nasty disease or fungus, never want to risk that
I wanna get one as my first snake I have experience in lizards so I think I’m ready it’s this or corn or ball python but those guys get a bit to big for me
So if I just use a heating light during the day, and turn it off at night, it shouldn’t become too cold in the glass tank for the snake? Would it be beneficial to use a UTH at night and the heating light by day? I keep my home temperature between 68-70 but it’s an older home so different rooms tend to have rather dramatic temperature fluctuations
I know this comment's old but, reptile carpet has a reputation for being a breeding ground for bacteria. Also, in a snake like a hognose that has a burrowing instinct, it seems almost mean to give them something they can't burrow in.
The only thing I have to say about this Is Under the tank heating works well in wooden viv’s this is how I heat my leopard gecko and hog nose snake You tape the heatmat inside of the viv at the bottom and place two probes over it one thermostat and one thermometer The put a thin layer of substrate Over top of it. I can stress this enough A thin layer of substrate also uk heating mats have no sticky side And it will work a charm 😇
Regarding UVB, it sure helps if you are going to breed hognoses, if you don't have UVB for them and breed the female will lay thin shelled eggs, windowed eggs so to say.
This happens because hognoses can lay very large clutches. The female simply doesn't have enough resources to calcify them all. This doesn't have anything to do with UVB. Smaller clutches don't have windows, larger clutches usually do. This doesn't hurt the egg or the baby. They hatch out just fine.
What brand of heat pad do you recommend? I found a thermometer by jump start recommended by Emily from snake discovery. But unsure which pad to get for an 11L tub
For UTH I usually just use Zoomed ones, they come with the little nodes on each corner which is nice. I haven't tried too many other brands maybe zilla but they're all very similar from what I've seen
If you read through the item description it should say if it's 100% aspen or mixed, often times I've found many of the small mammal intended ones are mixed with a bit of pine but so long as it's 100% aspen shouldn't be a problem
Why does google say garter snakes are not poisonous/venomous? If they have venom in them regardless of the mildness, they should be labeled as venomous
