6:23 I believe this is Scheme 2 of the Jacobs & Davies plan. 3:30 I believe this is Scheme 3 of said plan. 7:12 Correction: A portion of the "Queen St. Streetcar Subway" went underground. The line also had connections to Broadview Station and the Danforth streetcar along the DVP and Royal Drive, as well as to the King, Queen, and Dundas streetcars. 7:53 They said "Rapid Transit" subway, but didn't specify if it was Chicago-style. I believe the "Chicago-style" came from the proposed rolling stock being a mix of the streetcars and the Chicago 'L'. (13:37) 10:58 Leslie Street Spit = Tommy Thompson Park 19:56 A more serious interlining junction would use cross-platform interchanges at both stations.

Cancelling this never would reduce the number of cars. That number increases and now all those cars travelling South on the Allen are forced to navigate through all those residential areas and clog the whole area. I travel that route often, so hate the fact that a highway was not built all the way down to the Gardner, and then you'd have two major highways to get downtown. Getting from downtown up the 401 takes me longer than it does to get from my 401 connection to western Mississauga.

Great video, thank you! I think the correct next step to be re-build Yonge street car line as express route, with dedicated set of tracks, similar to St.Clair street, with stops only on main intersections' like Bloor, Eglinton, Lawrence, York Mills, Sheppard, Finch.

And here we are today, the worst traffic in North America and one of the worst in the world. What is not mentioned is that the Spadina Cancellation led to the cancellation of several other suburban expressways which would have encircled the city. This cancellation also fortold what Toronto would become: a city controlled and dominated by the opinions and views of a small, loud minority of NIMBYists.

  • @repatch43

There are reasons the traffic in Toronto ranks as the worst in North America, and this is a good example of why we have the mess we have today.

@22:59 I'm sorry, but what? I know I'm 3 years late, but I couldn't let this go. The only time the drivers would be 'driving' the trains is when not in ATO (automatic train operation). The only time that happened is when there was an issue with the system requiring trains to be in Cab Sig (Cab Signaling mode), where normal operation can occur with the signal showing up on an indicator to the right of the windscreen, or in emergency mode where the train (and central computer) isn't tracking it's location. The VAST majority of the time the trains operator in ATO, the driver was there to monitor the system, and the press the green button at every station to close the doors. The computers (one in every car, the computer in command was round robin, with a reselection happening southbound at Lawrence East Station, you could hear the handoff happen when the EBs (emergency brakes, more on them later) drop very momentarily during the transition), with the other computers monitoring (if a problem with a computer was found it would be disabled) 'drove' the train, including braking. Normal braking was accomplished mostly by the LIMs (linear induction motors) feeding energy back into the grid. The last bit of braking (and for normal station keeping, more on that later) was done by disc brakes on the trucks, which is why there was a little 'squeal' right at the end of coming to a stop. This was the case whether the computers were driving or the operator was driving, the operator didn't operate the disc brakes separate from the LIM brakes. The ONLY way a wheel wouldn't turn with the rail would be with the disc brakes engaged. In regards to the flat spots, this had NOTHING to do with the operators. The SRT operated on a 'moving block' system, the central computer knew where every train was, and ensured separation between those trains. As you mentioned, sometimes there were issues with the position sensing, and what could happen is if the train 'timed out' the computers on board would 'abort' operation basically since the central computer was now unsure where the train was located. This resulted in ALL brakes applying at once, including the emergency brakes, which were these huge electromagnets hovering just over the running rails. When they slammed down the train came to a stop rather quickly. At the point the operator would have to contact transit control to get clearance to move, and then in emergency mode (limited to 10kph IIRC) would drive the train to the next 'entry point', indicated by a blue light. There the train would re-enter the system and ATO operation could continue. It was these EB events that resulted (mostly) in the flat spots on the wheels. Aside from the train that came to a stop, there was often a divot on the rail resulting in further trains to start developing flat spots as their wheels ran over these divots. This meant ALOT of rain grinding and wheel machining having to be done to keep the system less loud than crazy loud.

As a 60-year-old quadriplegic living in the downtown core of Toronto. I have waited patiently for the relief line to be implemented. And like you said, losing Bill Davis as our premiere was catastrophic to the city of Toronto and listening to Jack Layton and his arrogant self-centred Ideas did nothing more than put Toronto back another 50 years. If you don't believe me, take a look at the writing his wife used to represent as a city counsellor and MP. It's quadrupled in population and had to be split into two separate riding. And now that his wife is our mayor I'm happy to see the province, take a hold of this transit issue and put some shovels to the ground. The problem still exists in Toronto, where there are too many counsellors for this city. Perhaps one for each borough would be adequate in the future. They might get something done then.

I never liked the Rogers street car. Driving over those (uneven) bricks was a nightmare. The current bus line, even if it is low-use, is a far superior service to the streetcars and trolley buses that used to run along Oakwood and Rogers. Thanks for the video and historical information - especially about the Weston street car that went all the way up to Woodbridge. 🙏

With the Line 5 west extension hopefully opening up in the next decade I think a second attempt at an Etobicoke RT could serve as a shuttle line connecting Renforth and Kipling, the western termini of Line 5 and Line 2 respectively, since there are currently hardly any rapid transit options between the two stations (the closest thing we have right now is the 109 MiWay express bus). The "Etobicoke RT 2.0/Etobicoke Line" (as I call it) could also fill in the rather huge gaps left by the current express buses (both TTC and MiWay). However I would suggest a few modifications: Once it reaches Eglinton it turns west onto the Line 5 corridor towards Renforth and then eventually up north to Pearson, effectively complementing Line 5. Remove the north segment from Pearson to Finch since Line 6 will likely be extended to Pearson too (I think someone either on this video or on another website suggested that Line 6 could extend to Kipling via the same corridor). Mode of transit could be either light rail as originally intended, with tracks directly on the grass like parts of Line 5, or automated light metro like the Ontario Line. Either way thanks to the upgraded mode of transit travel between Kipling and Pearson should take just as long as the current 900 express bus.

You mention the Etobicoke LRT could have connected to the Line 5 - which is true today inasmuch that it will one day connect with the sadly way overbuilt buried western extension of the crosstown (why is it a subway??) - at the time they were thinking more along the lines of a busway for that part of the city, possibly with conversion to rail one day. As you go into in your Eginton West video - which is great. I guess it’s sorta which frame of reference do you want to use - what would line have looked like at the time based on plans that were on the board? Or what would this line look like today? You’re sorta conflating the two. That said I think this is one of your best videos - you do great work (I don’t know if the bus routes are historically accurate, but even if not, that’s okay), I think the detail is great. One note is that when going through the line, the close up is great, but to alternate between close up and zoom in, as it’s hard to know exactly where one is. Or a split screen? - I do love the whole “unbuilt” series. I’d love to see a video you could put together or maybe “10 other ways Toronto could have ended up looking” basically what if they hadn’t built the 407 and instead gone all in on transit? Or what if they had built all the subways? Or built the Downtown Relief Line earlier? What would Toronto with a Streetcar subway look like today? Etc…. Basically taking all of your videos and imagining what the city would look like today if transportation planning (highways and transit) had gone wildly differently. It’s not a video I have seen anyone else really do - and would be great. Be happy to help with ideas. Don’t have a Patreon! I would be happy to support.

The flying U vaguely reminds me of the green line in Montreal. It made sense in isolation but eventually they would have to complete the bloor leg across the centre of the city. I do wonder tho, had they gone with that plan, what would have change with the University extension? Would seem odd to have 3 lines going north, tho looking at toronto now this would be great to have. That said, the queen street streetcar subway was such a missed opportunity - it would have revolutionized light rail transit in North America and beyond. The subway being built now is not a replacement. I still think we need some sort of dedicated tramway thru the downtown for the 504/502/503/501/505 (and for god sakes rename these lines) a central underground rapid transit hub branching out really does still make the most sense, with dedicated rights of way and signal priority in outlying areas.

  • @rebeccawinter472
    @rebeccawinter472 5 місяців тому

I think the idea with an elaboration on the 2011 plan was to have the Sheppard line extended to the Spadina extension, terminating at Sheppard West (or ideally at Downsview Park to connect with the GO line). This would bring people from the east to the west. All that said, I agree, LRT would have been a better plan for both Sheppard and Eglinton . If both were built in the 1990’s as LRT we could easily have built it for the full length at the cost of the stubways. The smaller trains could be run elevated and/or at grade (on a separate right of way - not like the tramway in Scarborough, which is a huge mistake) to reduce costs - there is ample space in Scarborough on Sheppard and in Etobicoke on Eglinton so with what we have now perhaps it is possible. Not sure how much retrofitting the Sheppard Line would have to undergo to make it LRT rather than subway but it may make an eastern extension to STC - long overdue - much more feasible. The only line in the 2011 plan that needed a subway was the downtown line. Sadly metro politics got in the way. It’s been the biggest obstacle to making good transit decisions over the past few decades. If they had replaced Line 3 with a Line 5 extension to STC it would be now (or whenever the actual line finally opens). Instead this notion that an area “deserves” subways seems to override all logic, and you do a great job of showing how this more recent example was not unique, unfortunately.

I do love your stuff. It’s really well researched. The pace could be a bit quicker but I listen at 1.5 and stop to look at maps. 😊 The biggest and most impactful transit project in Toronto I think could be a Midtown express regional rail line using the Dupont rail corridor; with connections to the Brampton-Kitchener & Barrie Lines around a new Dupont west station and terminating at the old Summerhill (North Toronto) Station. It could extend into Mississauga and follow the current Milton line until it deviates into a tunnel to Missausauga City Centre connecting with the Hurontario LRT and the MiWay BRT. Further extensions west to Milton and east to Scarborough could further offer a rapid express connection across the GTA. The way the city is growing, we keep building yesterday’s plans too late and need to be forward thinking. Faster travel on a regional level is what the city needs I would argue. The current GO RER project is a good first step and would LOVE you to do a video on that given it is the largest transit project in Canadian history. Not to mention way too unknown given its size! Thanks!

The solution to congestion on the Yonge line isn’t an extension - it’s only going to exacerbate it. To provide service to Richmond Hill we should getting the Richmond Hill line included in the GO RER plan so there is frequent bidirectional electrified service rather than unidirectional service.

Excellent and detailed history of a system I know not much of (I'm in the UK) My comment is rather late as your vid has only just popped up in my feed. One very small correction though: Gloucester is pronounced "Gloster" (I know it's a tiny thing but I thought you'd like to know) Thanks!

I wish it was built. That part of the city is nothing but a major disaster

Could it be possible to to get this to be an western extension of the Ontario Line? Seeing that it has potential to connect with Line 2,5,6 and a possible extension of lines 4, St. Clair and infill stations for Milton & Kitchener Line + UP Express if it has an underground deviation to Weston GO. Connect through Roncesvalles Junction to connect also with the other Streetcars onto Jane - Bloor.

As a life-long Torontonian, a motorist, and one who lives near St. Clair, I have always been ambivalent about streetcars. I am all for separate right-of-ways, but not on major avenues. Spadina was fine, because its extra-wide. St. Clair, I must disagree with. All that work, just to save 8 minutes time along the route, hardly worth it. It has meant driving along St. Clair now takes twice as long, because of all the stoplights every few blocks. Not only stoplights, but extra-long stoplights, due to their multi-phase nature, left- turners first, then strait through traffic, its agonizingly slow & frustrating...

I remember seeing the Flyer buses running on Bay Street. I was told that the motors in them were out of the old buses. They were so quiet and accelerated like snit.

Nice video! One question, regarding the abandoned streetcar loop at Keele Station. You mention it was where the senior residence is now. There are two such residences near the intersection, and both are across the street from the station. Is that correct? Did that moving sidewalk cross the street? Did it do so underground? Or did the streetcar just use what is now the bus loop around the back of Keele Station?

That loop was on the N/E corner of Indian Grove and Bloor . The E/B cars would pull into the loop from Bloor at a spot just east of the Indian Grove intersection where there were unloading and loading platforms and would leave the loop onto Indian Grove S/B and turn right back to Bloor W/B.
