    You forgot that the St. Clair Car operated up Weston Road to "Northland" which was actually Avon loop during Rush hours until the Bloor Danforth Subway opened in 1966. The Weston Rd Car survived in part for a long time.

    If they build the Northern Line, I wouldn't mind rolling stock similar to the JR ones in Japan, since the function of the line is similar to the Yamanote Line in Tokyo (just without the loop).

    Interesting video, but in the video it's not St. Catherines like the name but St. Catharines, although the origin of that name is questionable (some theories are Catharine Merritt, or used by the Palatinate Germans who were in the area). A little interesting did you know for you.

    4:55 The Guelph Interurban did not go through the CP rail mainline and Guelph Junction Railway. In fact, it followed a path parallel to the Midtown line to Mimico Creek, Mimico Creek to Islington Avenue, Dundas Street to Dixie Road, the Midtown line to Cooksville, Cedar Brae, Mackenzie, and Brentwood parks to the Valley Bridge, Cooksville creek to Eglinton, where it went cross-country to the Credit river. It ran roughly parallel to the river and Silver Creek to Georgetown, where it went on a winding route south of the CNR tracks all the way to what is now the Guelph Radial trail. Once it reached James Street, it followed Gordon, Wilson, and McDonell streets to downtown Guelph. The Woodbridge Radial followed Weston to Albion, the West Humber River to Islington, where it made a gentle curve back onto Albion, which it followed to Kipling. North of Steeles, it ran roughly parallel to the Humber river with a part of the right-of-way near Highway 7 on Wallace Street where it then followed roughly parallel to the Humber again to Woodbridge Avenue, just west of Clarence Street where it turns northwest.

    Until the Bloor - Danforth opened in 1966, the St. Clair car operated from the subway a 6 minute service in the rush hour to Keele and a 6 minute service to Northlands up Weston Road, Earlscourt operated a 3 minute service to Lansdowne and Rogers operated a a 3 minute service to Bicknell. Either St. Clair or Earlscourt would operate a 3 minute service up Mt. Pleasant to Eglinton. The TTC kept changing which line went where but on weekends only St. Clair ran.

    Great video! I really appreciated the in-depth explanation of this. I just visited South Korea and Japan and it does make me a little upset and angry that we could've had greater regional transit but walked away from it. And today our biggest transportation problem is east-west regional transit. Perhaps Highway 401 wouldn't be as wide as it is and there wouldn't be wild talk about a highway below the highway. The idea about a northern east-west transit route is still incredibly relevant today, and its unfortunate we're not talking about a new transit line elevated above Highway 401, alongside Highway 407 (as planned) or along the hydro corridor(s). Thanks again for the great video.

      @@ALuimes No that's pretty much a metro if it uses dedicated tracks with zero direct interaction with any other form of traffic. I mean while the trains themselves may have had more in common with Line 3 and the Vancouver SkyTrain, both the line and system respectively were and are still metros and GO ALRT would've been a metro with more of a regional focus.

    I remember over the years back in 1979 my dad driving out to Rogue Hill Go station, we watch Go Via, Turbo and the odd CN train which was rare to see. I remember going to a Blue Jays game one year a CN rescue locomotive was leading the Go train. As to this video what could’ve been was a master plan, even a line from Metro Toronto Zoo to downtown Toronto, especially if the line had gone south to Kingston Road and West to Downtown Toronto!

    As much as RER will help the region, it won't compare to what GO-ALRT would have been. We will be initially using electric locomotives with the existing bilevel trains for RER (no plans to use EMU's but its possible) and only slightly upgrading the signaling system. The trains will have a better acceleration profile, but nothing like a lightweight train like ALRT was supposed to be. Furthermore, without fully driverless tech we will see frequencies around every 15 minutes, maybe some 7 minute frequencies during rush hour. This pales in comparison to the 2 minute frequencies of ALRT. Speeds will also be an issue, at these frequencies we will see often traffic on the lines and slowdowns, especially through Unions spiderweb of trackage. Speeds will be lower than what ALRT would have provided. Even with EMU's and better signaling, everything still has to conform to mainline track standards. We probably would see maybe 7-5 minute frequencies at best.

    • @drewpatterson8261
      @drewpatterson8261 Місяць тому

      Yep, automation is the key to higher frequency. Very difficult to see how any GO line can achieve a frequency of less than 15 minutes when every GO train is required to have a 3 man crew.

    Would these trains be the same width as the UTDC trains? They seem to be small (2.50m) in width compared to even the subway (3.2m) let alone the Bilevel (3.0m) and Hawker Siddley Cars (3.14m). Skytrain transverse seating has narrow walk ways and you can feel the size difference compared to the subway. GO-ALRT trains remind me of the layout of the Montreal Expo Express trains with subway trains with a more coach style seating. Both automated; would be interesting if GO used them cause Montreal only used them for 6 years. Edit: having 6 doors than 8 doors per train, despite same dimensions as subway trains.

    • @METRO6
      @METRO6 2 місяці тому

      The ALRT trains would absolutely have to be wider then the standard ICTS trains to fit the 2x2 seating layout. I don't know what the exact width of the trains would have been though since it never came up in my research, although I know the information is out there somewhere. If I had to guess they would likely be a similar width to the Bi-Level coaches if only to make it easier to convert the Lake Shore corridor to ALRT in parts that didn't need to be elevated.

  • @MustafaAnimates2008

    They should still probably consider building a New GO Line Between Pickering and either Oakville or Brantford. most of it would be alongside the CN York Sub and if it were to continue towards Oakville then. it would branch off the CN York sub near to where it meets the GO Weston sub, and then follow the south side of the 407 hydro corridor until Lisgar where it could follow a portion of the CPKC Galt sub and then turn south following CPKC's Hornby Spur to Hydro One’s Trafalgar Transformer Station and then after passing the Transformer Station, it could follow ninth line until highway 403 where it would follow it until it reaches Oakville GO. and if it were to go towards Brantford, then it would follow the CN Halton Sub uptill where it joins with a portion of the Oakville Subdivision, and then from there it would continue onto the CN Dundas Subdivision to Brantford.
