LYRICS:
Poseidon, Poseidon, Poseidon, Poseidon
Poseidon, Poseidon, Poseidon, Poseidon
In all my years of living
It isn't very often that I get pissed off
I try to chill with the waves
But damn, you crossed the line
I've been so gracious
And yet, you hurt this son of mine
That's right, the cyclops you made blind, is mine
No
I'm left without a choice and without a doubt
Guess the pack of wolves is swimming with the shark now
I've gotta make you bleed, I need to see you drown
But before you go, I need to make you learn how
Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves
(Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves)
Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves
Ourselves
You are the worst kind of good 'cause you're not even great
A Greek who reeks of false righteousness, that's what I hate
'Cause you fight to save lives, but won't kill and don't get the job done
I mean, you totally could have avoided all this had you just killed my son
But no
You are far too nice, mercy has a price
It's the final crack, we're bound to break the ice now
You reveal your name, then you let him live
Unlike you, I've got no mercy left to give 'cause
Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves
(Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves)
Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves
Ourselves
And now it is finally time to say goodbye, today you die
Unless, of course, you apologize
For my son's pain and all his cries
Poseidon, we meant no harm
We only hurt him to disarm him
We took no pleasure in his pain
We only wanted to escape
The line between naïveté and hopefulness is almost invisible
So close your heart, the world is dark and
Ruthlessness is mercy
Die
Ruthlessness is mercy upon our- (Captain, Captain)
Ruthlessness is mercy upon our- (Captain, Captain)
Ruthlessness is mercy upon our- (Captain, Captain)
Ruthlessness is -
What have you done?
When does a ripple become a tidal wave?
43 left under your command
When does man become a monster?
I am your darkest moment
The monster that always draws near
Any last words?
All I gotta do is open this bag
What?
Remember me

I figured the line “the pack of wolves is swimming with the sharks now” was Poseidon doubling down the level of threat on Odysseus. Poseidon referring to himself and Odysseus’s problems as the wolves and sharks circling him now.

A little possible detail and idea I may point out on "A Greek that reeks of false righteousness, that's what I hate!" is that Zeus is also the GOD OF JUSTICE....just food for thought.

Another thing about the “pack of wolves “ comment. Like another’s have mentioned , Odysseus’s grandpa is Autolykos (meaning Wolf himself), a thief god. But also the brooch that Penelope makes Odysseus is of a Wolf butting the leg of a deer. So Odysseus has multiple connections to wolves.

Something I love about this animatic is one, it doesnt shy away from Odysseus still not having learned the lesson and have some of his pride still fully on display infront of the gods, while many others depict him in the apology as a cowering man on his knees. The other is Poseidons "Are you fucking serious?"-face on 20:12, its just such a "Man you are either the dumbest or the bravest man on the planet to have the balls to do that."

Also something I always thought about the "pack of wolves swimming with the shark" line is that Odeseus and his men killed and stole Polyphemus' flock of sheep. Literally a pack of wolves.

A small detail I love is that Odysseus' "What have you done?" has the same melodic line as Polyphemus' "You killed my sheep". Poseidon succeeded in reflecting the pain of his son in Odysseus!

12:10 thats pretty fitting cause in greek mythology, burying the dead was an incredibly important ritual, to the point that wars would hold ceasefires to bury their dead. Burying them with a coin under their tongue would mean they'd be able to pay Charon, the boatsman of the dead, to take them to the underworld; it was just that important. And it's why dying at sea was so terrifying, because their souls would never rest.

Casper!, Poseidon's instrument is the trumpets and I'm not entirely sure but I think the cymbals too, however something curious is that the electric guitar is also very present with him and this is because as I remember Jorge explained Poseidon is the antithesis of Odysseus (who is represented by a guitar that varies between acoustic and electric depending on the situation) , to make it clear, they share the same instrument but with a small change.

Casper I think the other wind gods you are referring to are the anemi, who were wind gods that corresponded to the cardinal points from which their winds came, depending on the version their physical representation varies, but they all serve Eolo/Aeolus who frees or imprisons them according to his desire, that is why Odysseus says gods of the wind instead of god of the wind

Toooo be fair to Odysseus, he did make some very bad decisions, but of the bad choices that led to this moment... he's not the main culprit They would've gotten home had his crew not blatantly opposed him by opening the bag... He was right to shut down the doubt in Luck Runs Out, its real dangerous to start questioning your captain, as evidenced by the fact they wouldve made it home had they not disobeyed a direct order, and the rest of their men paid the price for it. Odysseus revealing his name out of anger in memory of Polites when Athena demanded he finish it was real dumb, but they would've been home free had they kept the dang bag closed. (Also in no way would the word sorry stop the inevitable... Poseidon chastised him for the naivity of pleading his case at all, an apology wouldn't have made a difference)

I don't know if anyone'll see this but as a bit of a Greek mythology nerd, I wanted to offer a little bit of perspective that I haven't seen anyone else mention before: On the topic of Odysseus doxxing himself, I don't think it was a moment of plain stupidity (I mean obviously it wasn't the right choice) but rather (in the musical) a moment of hopeful naivety caused by taking on Polites' beliefs. Let me explain- He feels that the harm to Polyphemus has been consequence enough for the attempt at killing Ody and all his men, and chooses mercy, thinking that Polyphemus will likely appreciate getting to live. So when leaving, he's like "remember this lesson, and the people who chose mercy, unlike yourself-me aka Odysseus aka King of Ithaca, and my men-and maybe next time it will make you rethink the idea of hurting others. Remember that choosing violence brought you pain, but that you were lucky enough to've attacked people who would choose to spare you and leave you the gift of your life. (Also I fucked you up once, I can do it again so remember your lost eyeball and don't try anything, bitch, I WILL do what I have to, keep that in mind)" And literally this would have been perfectly fine had the Cyclops not been the child of Poseidon, which WHAT ARE THE FRICKIN ODDS REALLY 😂 It's like punching the bully at school and later being punished because it turns out that kid has a rich parent who is /your/ parent's boss. Like, what honestly are the actual odds? Almost zero, the Odyssey is simply written with the odds very suddenly stacked against Odysseus because the Greek poet who wrote it was into torture porn lol And honestly, for all the people saying Odysseus is stupid, yall don't realize that all the tactics he uses are usually Very effective in the context of the Greek myths. The point is not that he's dumb, in fact he is extremely smart and understands how the world works-with a caveat: His view is outside the parameters of a tragedy. And his story is built to be a tragedy from the start. The point of this story is not "look at how dumb this bitch is" lol it's more like "there was no conceivable way for this story to go well, no matter how smart the person placed into these circumstances-but against all odds the ending is still [REDACTED TO SPARE YOU SPOILERS]. Marvel and be in awe!" I guess my point with all this is to say, we ALL wish Polites was still alive, but none of us wish it more than Odysseus himself, and no matter how much we wish he could have done something to save our best boy, let's be completely honest-Polites would never blame Ody for his own death because he knows his best friend is doing his absolute best (more than most mortals would ever have managed!), and also that Odysseus was just as much the best possible friend he could ever have had, as he himself was to Odysseus. Rather than blaming Ody and resenting him, I think we would do better by embracing him with open arms, the way I'm sure Polites wishes he could do to let Ody know he shouldn't have to suffer all the grief and guilt he's been given no choice but to suffer, with the life he's been given. Polites' death was never his fault or choice. Hope that helps offer a little more info and context to some of the events of the story! All my love to you guys ♥ I get so much fun out of watching your reactions. (Also I might even go so far as to suggest mayyyybe a little of the animosity that goes Ody's way from fans might partly be a feeling of helplessness to fix the situation, and being upset that he with all his smarts has no more power than us readers/listeners/watchers to change anything. It's like watching a loved one die and blaming yourself. He's kinda a proxy for our judging ourselves for the overwhelming helplessness in saving our beloved boy haha Because unlike us he's living in there, he should have power and influence, right?? But nooooooo)

    • @howaboutno.01
      @howaboutno.01 7 годин тому

Also also, Others have already beautifully covered the situation with how Odysseus had some pretty valid reasons to "apologize" the way he did so I won't go tooo far into that, except to say that this is part of what I mean when I say he understands very well how the world of Greek mythology normally works-the gods are generally far more receptive to a woeful tale that explains the mortals' plight and actions than a simple apology that just expresses remorse. He truly made the choice that was most likely to keep them out of hot water (pun intended), but the whole point and reason Poseidon then mentions naivety and hopefulness being basically the same is pretty much what others have said already: "Dumbass, did you REALLY think I'd ever spare you even if I understood what had truly happened and how much you regret and didn't want to do it? HA, I made you grovel and now you die humiliated." Because THAT was the goal: humiliation at being made to express his regret for harm (which he had no choice but to do), and then despair and grief as he helplessly watched his men inevitably die, right before he himself died. Poseidon didn't want an apology. He wanted to see Odysseus as tortured and emotionally wrecked as possible before his light was unceremoniously snuffed out by a snap of Poseidon's fingers But on to the other major point I wanted to bring up-Athena isn't dumb either. She's a goddess of wisdom, but generally in the area of war and power, wiliness. Not exactly therapy, ESPECIALLY as she's not even a mortal herself. That's the cool thing about why the gods are so obsessed with humans-they're so detached because of their own immortality that they find humans fascinating, they're difficult to understand because our tiny mortal worldview is so limited, but also more expansive because we have to face our own mortality every day unlike the gods. That's something we have over them! Odysseus tricking Athena as a child isn't proof that Athena is stupid, but rather proof that Odysseus is very clever for a mere mortal, showcasing the exact quality that makes Athena interested in him. The gods might be powerful and know more than humans generally, but they have blind spots, unlike the god of Christianity who is claimed to be omniscient and all-seeing/all-knowing. Mortals will sometimes surprise the gods throughout the mythology, bringing them something interesting to hook their attention and favour for a time, making some humans almost like a favoured pet for a while. It's like when a house cat does something that surprises you-it's delightful and can show just how clever the little creatures are, but in no way does it signal that they're smarter than we are or that their owners are stupid, right? Child Odysseus was basically that surprising house cat lol

  • @beckjoy3778
    @beckjoy3778 8 годин тому

Compared to most of Greek mythology, Poseidon isn't often called out to settle grudges. While a lot of mythology surrounding him may seem that way, he's often just associated with the term laid back and will only do things to tell people, "Hey, you disrespected me! Don't do it again!" I think this is part of the reason that Rick Riordan portrayed the god as being the better father figure compared to his brothers when it comes to his kids. Also, Poseidon wouldn't have gotten involved unless Odysseus didn't mention his name. Once Odysseus had said that, Polyphemus prayed for Poseidon to delay Odysseus's return for as long as he could as punishment. It was Odysseus's own pride that brought about his ultimate downfall and his greatest enemy. Aelous even comments on this, because Odysseus did stop by his palace one more time to explain the bag situation, only for the god of winds to say, "You have been granted bad luck at sea because you angered Poseidon. Leave my palace at once!" So, really, Odysseus needs to put a rein on his impulses.
