It’s interesting watching this in 2024 and seeing that the plotline of a shy character being sent to a new place and meeting a very unique character was repeated AGAIN in the boy and the heron lol. With the protagonist moving to a new place and not getting along with the other kids and his stepmom, meeting the heron, ect.

Just found this channel and am enjoying the Ghibli reviews. I’ve seen most of their movies but just saw whisper of the heart today in theatres for ghibli fest and loved it. What did you think of the boy and the heron? I know this channel hasnt been active recently, but a review of it would be cool

This movie is what introduced me to Abbott and Costello,AND the classic Universal Studios Monsters! Because of that movie, wouldn’t be the monster fan I am today! Oh and my most favorite monster now is the Wolfman! BIG werewolf fan because of this movie!!!

The Disney dub is the 2nd English dub made for the movie. The first English dub was make for an airline and was released on laser disc.

Despite growing up with the original dub with English songs, I actually prefer the restored 2010 version. I appreciate the moments of silence and like the Japanese songs. I don’t need constant dialog or witty comments from Jiji. Just my opinion! But I loved the Fox dub of Totoro.

the narrator is INCAPABLE of pronouncing the movie star(s) & director's last name(s) correctly. Obviously, not a well-read, nor educated person. Hit some books, and watch some news reels of the period(s) of history you are presenting. Yes, your Mom and Dad are embarrassed as well. Since you likely are NOT a successful movie director, keep your low IQ opinions of the ~ ending ~ of the movie to yourself. Definitely a lack of class. ....and I grew UP in Michigan and can understand the ending of the movie very well.

This film was made for a Japanese child so it's hardly surprising that you're not overwhelmed by Totoro. It's one of the most laid-back films I've ever seen.

It's "A-o-i Hi-i-ra-gi." I wanted to like Whisper of the Heart but did not care for the violin-maker's wanting to go to Italy. That took me out of the film somewhat.

I saw a UA-cam video about a cat which had its front paw injured. It was walking in a parking lot looking for food with its bare bone sticking out.... I lost it when I saw that. It wasn't some animation; it was real life. Perhaps that's why Grave of the Fireflies didn't reduce you to tears. It was a creation and you saw through it.

I'm glad you pronounced the film title correctly as "Po-nyo" and not "Pawn-yoh" as most people do. That said, this is not my favorite Studio Ghibli film.

I love this film but it should have been in color. They used to make films in B&W when the budget was tight.

I never cared for the English version with Phil Hartman dubbing Jiji's lines. Miyazaki should have never allowed it.

This is my favorite Ghibli film. I totally understand why it wouldn’t be other’s though, it’s more calm and simple. I like that though, it’s less chaotic and I find myself keep wanting to rewatch it

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the Streamline version English Dub. I think that version sticks closer to the Japanese dub imo.

I remember watching this movie as a child (I'm considering seeing it again). I liked it very much, though I must admit Hilda's portuguese V.A did not do many favors for the character. I hope the DVD will let me change the language to japanese.

They cut out Ursula handing Kiki gum. Why?? And they cut out that guy who picked them up when they were trying to hitch-hike. He goes, “Ursula, is that you?! I didn’t recognize you, I thought you were a boy!” I’m sad they cut that out. It made Ursula seem connected to her community, she knew this guy, revealing that she’s lived there for a while and knew her neighbors. It added to her character. Also, they cut out Barsa pretending to fly Kiki’s broom! 😢

So-called "Edmund Gwenn" wasn't even his real name. Obviously Edmund John Kellaway sold-out his birth moniker in the name of 'Hollywood' shallowness, deceit, & greed. In other words, from money-grubbing Agent(s) and or Studio(s), with preconceived notions of greater recognition and better financial gain?! The worst part was the disrespect of parents and family heritage.

The biggest problem is Jijis voice in the English version they really screwed jiji up BAD

I will never forget the first time I watched "Warriors of The Wind". I happened on it by accident late one night on HBO in the mid-eighties. I had been a fan of science fiction since I was 10-11 years old, beginning with The Time Machine and The Hobbit. My main familiarity with anime and manga was Robotech, which I followed in order on a small local (not cable) TV station in the afternoons after I knocked off work. But I had never seen anything quite like this before. I was in tears at the literally uplifting ending, and never forgot it. It wasn't until Disney (it was Pixar, actually) redid the English translation and re-released it that I learned the real story about Nausicaa and Miyazaki. I have my own copy, but deliberately only watch it once a year or so. Good presentation by the way, and fine voice work. My favorite reviewers and critics on UA-cam are usually Brits. You guys are my TV in this part of the 21st Century.

I noticed some 'New' scenes where in the new nausicca movie, i suddenly realized and say those scenes were cut!? Never the less, if i didn't watch the "warriors of the Wind", i wouldn't know the existence of the original movie. Back then was so good, now is better and can finally understand why these actions happened, thank you for this video man.

I agree with all of the points in this video. HOWEVER, I will not deny that like the narrator I saw WOTW as a young boy 1985 and I was mesmerized by the plot/characters/animation/music (Hisaishi). Yes, the dubbing was terrible. Yes, the editing destroyed the character development. Nevertheless, there's a special place in my heart for WOTW because this film introduced me to Japanese animation when anime was few and far between in the United States. The manga is amazing and the soundtrack is great and unmistakable.

For some reason every time Sho came on screen it gave me Johnathan Joestar vibes. He's just a goody two shoes with no real personality. Still likeable tho. Also, I have to say this: the scene where Arrietty tells Sho that her mother was taken and starts crying is so weird. Like, she's crying about how a human TOOK her mother, and Sho just reaches out to tell her to get on his hand. He's telling her to basically do what happened to her mother before she disappeared. And with his "cute innocent" face it genuenly looks like a "Top 10 Anime Betrayals" moment. I laughed so fucking much when that frame appeared on screen like holy shit that was badly done.

My favorite Ghibli movie by far, tho I am a bit disappointed by the American dub. The renaming of the human characters, as well as the shitty narration at the and saying "oh actually everything ended up fine". It's just bad. Watch the British dub or the Sub. I recommend the sub but the British version is also good. Just don't watch the American version as your first experience.

I'd love to know when this hit HBO, because that's when I saw it. Seems like it was on a bunch. I was probably 7 or 8. It made a huge impression, sucked me in, introduced a whole new world. I'd seen Voltron and Transformers by that point, but this was the most "anime" anime I'd seen up to that point. It was VERY different. And then...it was gone. I must have forgotten about it. Because in the 90s, in my early teens, I "rediscovered" it. My parents got me what looked like a cheap and kinda crappy XMAS gift - a VHS with a weird cartoon Star Wars knockoff cover. Thankfully, I tried watching it, and flipped out: "OMG - this is that movie I saw as a little kid! With the toxic jungle!!" So i fell in love with it again. So, this movie was there for me as a little kid, again in my teens, and I even dug it out in my 20s and had my friends watch it, after Mononoke and possibly Spirited Away came out, but before the Disney re-dubbed uncut Nausicaa was released. I know it has flaws, I'm shocked how much was cut out, I understand why folks dis it, but Warriors of the Wind means a LOT to me. Looking back, I can say it was my first anime movie. And because of it, even an American born in the late 70s like me got to experience that Miyazaki magic as a little kid, just as kids in Japan did, and later generations of US kids finally got to do in the late 90s, 2000s, and so on up til today. Earlier tonight I saw the subtitled Japanese version for the first time ever...in my local theater! Never, ever, imagined I'd see Nausicaa on the big screen. I'm glad I found this video and your other Nausicaa vid for my wind-down watching tonight. Big thanks!

There should be an option to listen to the English dub with or without the extra sounds of the Disney version. Best of both worlds.

The additional music in the '98 dub was superb. I'll always love that version the most.

To this day its stil my fav ghibli movie. I enjoyed this video allot, well explained,edited and put together.
