I really enjoy this movie, and I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. I don't necessarily disagree with this movie's pacing being slow compared to many other films, especially when comparing it to Miyazaki's work, but I don't view it as a weak point when it comes to this movie. I felt as if these scenes were moments the viewer could really take in what was happening; Kaguya's emotions, the small moments that eventually became her only source of happiness, etc. To Kaguya, her life often felt dull and empty and I think with some of the slow scenes in this movie, we as the audience get to experience a fraction of what Kaguya is feeling. This is especially relevant before our shared favourite scene when at a party thrown in her honour, she's about to waste away from boredom.
This movie isn't simply a story, but an experience. The wonderful music compliments the beautiful animation, and the way they work together really makes you feel a wide range of emotions. When watching movies, we are often used to getting all sorts of events, images and noise thrown at us, so when we're presented with this peaceful yet chaotic masterpiece, we face our own impatience and lack of peacefulness.
Sometimes, life is slow. Life is peaceful, chaotic, but it is also beautiful like Kaguya concludes before she "leaves" it. I don't think this ending would be as convincing and heartfelt as I experienced it to be, without all these peaceful and simple scenes. They were often my favourite part of the movie, and I don't think this movie would have been complete if even just one of these scenes were removed.
(Edit: I've only ever seen this film with the original Japanese voice acting, because I believe the English and Japanese version are two different films.)

Lol this is the problem when western men try to review asian aesthetics. Just so you know the "slowness" of the pacing serves a purpose unlike many western films where every minute needs unnecessary action. Next time try to see the philosophical standpoint of this film

western men or rather American men? I don't think Europeans have that much of a problem with slowness as much of European art cinema is "slow".

I disagree with you honestly, this is THE only movie to make me SOB. I've cried watching other movies, but something about the way she experiences life relates to me on a deep emotional level, in a way no other movie has done so far. That is what the movie is, the purpose of the story the experience, It's easy to "just tell a story", it's very very very difficult to have an audience experience that story as if it was there own. The mundane things that she finds happiness in, are simular to the mundane things I find happiness in, so when it is stolen, it's even more heartbreaking. For me at least...

I haven't felt that way for a movie for the longest time... Masterpiece!

The more conscious and meditative the viewers are, the more profoundly captivated by this grand-masterpiece. It is otherworldly.

I dont respect rotten tomatoes reviews anymore.... to me this movie is so refreshing, its a tale that has been told so many times...... still I believe it manages to connect emotionally with the viewer beautifully.... charged with symbolism and archetypes... the character grows and the style and color pallette are great... and as you said kaguya's run sequence is one of a kind.... a lot of people dont like the end.... I think its good... it shows as she's asking for more time that what make's life real is the contrast of experience we get to live..... to feel love so deep that could only exist if becasue there is the void of abroken heart....... to not let society's toll to take whatever makes you tic. to not forget to feel alive and the little things.... because while the end is still a part of a path.... when we face it we only have a recollection of experiences.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. Maybe I'll look at it with that mind set the next time I watch it. I like the ending too. It's what made the film stand out and it's the part where I felt the most emotional as well.

About the movie I love the fact that the story is entirely set to build up Kaguya's depression, this is why in particular I love the part with the princes, since you can see how gravity of her reactions escalates quickly. In general I think that Takahata managed to give a lot of depth to nothing more than a fairytale

The original tale is much much longer than 15min, each of the princes had a whole story fleshed out for their adventures, the montage in the movie is much condensed

Due to work, I haven’t finished watching on netflix, I want ti give it my undivided attention. The first third of the film has stayed with me and I can feel her longing for her former life. It is a powerful critic. The drawings are different along her journey, too. Very interesting. Very beautiful, the music is intriguing, all of it is such a different experience.

Kaguya is way better than any other ghibli film if you don't agree is that you don't empathize with the princess's suffering and joy
