Great video ! I would just have to disagree about the third act « issue », because to me it makes a lot of sense. Jiji is (I believe), the representation of Kiki’s fears, if you actually listen to what he tells her during the whole film, he’s not supportive at all « you shouldn’t go » « when are we going home » « there are too many people there ». He also represents her childhood (so her innocence), he holds on to the past, and so when Kiki finally learns to adapt to her new life, automatically she lets go of her fears, of her attachment to futile things like pretty dresses (first scene), of her nostalgia, and of Jiji. She finally starts to listen to herself, and not that little voice in the back, that’s why she got her powers back, but not the talking Jiji. Great metaphor of what independence is ! Rewatch it with that in mind and you’ll see, it became really striking to me 💫
Yes, I have watched the movie with that mindset. It is fitting and I do believe that it was Miyazaki's intention to play it off that way. In my "Kiki Comparisons" video, I said that I do lean more towards the reedited dub compared to the Disney dub because of how refreshingly quiet the atmosphere of the reedited version is. I believe most fans, including myself, just wish that Jiji would speak again out of love for Phil Hartman, since he died before the 1998 version was released. His performance as Jiji seemed like a loving farewell.
To address your issues with this wonderful film, including the show, seemingly boring pace and the problem with "a certain character" (you can come out and say it, we all know it's Jiji), seek out the original 1998 VHS/2003 DVD version of the Disney dub. The version you've seen up to now has been the 2010 "Restored Cut", re-edited to be closer to the Japanese version including removing a lot of excess dialogue from Jiji. It's the 1998/2003 dub that so many people have fallen in love with, myself included, and much debate rages regarding the 2010 Restored Cut and Disney's refusal to rerelease the original dub. That is the film you seek. In fact, I'd love to see you do a supplement to think episode once you have seen that original dub.
Nice review! I saw it for the first time on the 1st day of Ghibli Fest 2019. I loved the movie and I think you’re review is on point. I did expect some more from the movie but then I saw it again and realized how great this was. Thanks for the review!
Yeah, many Ghibli movies seem to have that effect. You have to see them twice in order to really appreciate them. I'm trying to figure out why. I think it's because we are so used to getting action and excitement from our animated films that when one comes along that focuses more on the silent moments our expectations seem to be too high and the film as a whole becomes a letdown. But once we get a feel for what type of film the movie is, we seem to understand it better the second time.
@@moviehistorychannel1523 I didn't have any problems with the second viewing of this film as you did, mainly because for years I've heard about Ghibli films being different types of animated movies. In fact, in my research, I even found out that they made some significant changes in the dubs for these films, so I went in knowing what to expect and even viewed the sub to understand the original intent of the director's vision. I ended up loving Kiki on my first viewing as a result. I guess there's also the fact that I love relaxing slice-of-life movies. I'm getting a little tired of action-packed, epic, comedy animated films here in the west.
In the original English dub jiji does talk to kiki again. Phil Hartman made that my favoirte movie tbh. All the extra lines made the movie perfect for me.
I saw the movie about a year ago for the first time and i usually watch movies once these days but at this point i now have watched the movie 3 times and i'm sure i'll watch it again in the future this movie gave me a feeling peacefulness and the thing i really got of this experience is that sometimes a movie doesn't need over the top violence or action to be good
God I know im an entire year late. But good lord you had the same feeling I had with the 3rd arc... It made the whole movie for me feel completely depressing... And almost something I wanna avoid watching again... (For me anyway) god :/ but boy was the movie wholesome.
Yes, that's exactly how I felt. But based on the comments below many are telling me that the Disney VHS and DVD release of the film had more dialogue from Phil Hartman. They just cut it out of the Blu-ray version to lean more towards Miyazaki's original vision. I hope to see those other versions someday!

When I was 4-6 years old I watched this but in Chinese version is very nice and good in that time I remember this but forgot the name

You must watch Studio Ghibli films in Japanese with English subtitles, otherwise you're cheating yourself.
