Welcome to Home A Roam!
We are documenting our transition from a traditional 9-5 lifestyle to one of freedom and the ability to choose our own adventure. We’ve quit our jobs, downsized our home, bought an RV, and then the pandemic hit. We patiently waited to hit the road on a grand adventure with our adventure cat, Benny.
And then, off we went! Across Canada and back. All over British Columbia. Snowbirding in California and Arizona. Spending the winter in Baja California and Baja California Sur.

Arches National Park - Fiery Furnace hike. Worth the extra cost?
We paid the extra fee to go into the fiery furnace hike at Arches National Park. Was it worth the extra cost? You bet it was. We climbed, squeezed, and scrambled our way through this incredible hike in Arches National Park with a day pass we bought two days in advance. After watching a safety briefing we were let loose to explore on our own and the best part was that we barely saw another person on the entire hike! Unlike other hikes in Arches National Park, the Fiery Furnace is limited to a certain number of visitors each day, making it the perfect hike to escape the crowds.

Is South Padre Island Good for RV Snowbirds?
This video just popped into my UA-cam...right after we returned to San Antonio after traveling to Hope, BC!
Good video. One of my problems after doing all of this with no success turned out to be something different. I ordered a re-build kit. One item was a new gas jet. When I removed the old jet, there was debris in the jet hole. It has started doing it again so that is where I will look next. Hard to get to on my Atwood. The company says you have to remove the furnace, which I did the first time, but I will try to do it without that this time.
That was awesome, thanks for sharing
Where r u guys now
In which application or website can you know when the next launch is at the Vandenberg station?
Yes, we do have the best BBQ!! 😊
We definitely agree! 😊
For wonderful and affordable original art please visit the Fredericksburg Art Guild at 308 E Austin behind the Nimitz Museum!!!!
my furnace is not blowing i got a new battery and stove works but furnace won’t blow
So sorry to hear that! Have you checked the fuse as well?
This happened to us and we replaced the motor. $75 on Amazon
Stop in GN, see the whales, and get out. It's an awful place, and I LOVE (and live in) Baja.
Love them!! I live in Colorado and it’s so fun!!! 🥰🧡🙌🚴♀️🏔️
That’s so awesome 🥰🙌🌲
Consider putting an E at the end of Lompoce , and that’s how you would pronounce it.
Insane taking a travel trailer there. I think it would make an already stressful trip over the top. I bet you will never do that again.
Hahah, yeah it wasn't an easy trek! 😁 One of the reason we're switching from a trailer to a van. Although I'm not sure I would take the van there either to be honest...
@@HomeARoam I think a van would be much more manageable but I have never tried it. I am thinking of taking my sprinter. Why would you not consider taking the van?
Would not ignite, but blowing.Just for kick i blew it out with a small leaf blower, and every thing is fine.lol
Nice! Glad to hear that did the trick. Keep in mind there still might be a nice sail switch in your future. I always kept a spare one with us just in case.
Used to love hiking in that park. The landscapes are out of this world.
They are SO beautiful. Definitely one of our favorites 😀
❤ that is so great. I’m glad you put this clip together and published it. That’s a hike that e and I would not be able to do now so we see it through you.
Happy to share 😀 It was a pretty good workout climbing over all those rocks.
May our view furnace is working very fine but I was looking how to separate the fan from the furnace itself so that I could run the fan or the fan with heat which would be the furnace but your video is very informative and it is kudos to somebody like you who gives enough to put it out there to help people so thank you very much I don't have this problem yet but if I ever do your video has already helped me😊
Great to hear it was helpful! Yeah, I'm not actually sure the best way to run the fan on its own. I suspect there might be a way to patch into the controller or maybe even just with a different thermostat that supports that feature.
👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Turned out to be a great purchase!
I have maintained my own furnaces for years and years what a great video step by step you did an excellent job.
Thanks! So nice to hear it ♥️
I go there every weekend in my RV. I live 20 minutes away been doing it for years haven't got stuck not even once i go pass access 6 entry love it
Sounds like you've got lots of experience driving on that sand. Nice! 🙂
The only place I ever saw Painted Buntings was at Pedernales Falls State Park in the bird blind. We had to be super quiet or they would scare off.
Maybe one day we'll get to see one. From what we hear they are super shy, like you said.
That's my favorite Texas state park as well. I'm glad y'all enjoyed it.
Thanks! Yeah it was the best!
Park into the wind
Definitely a good tip. The only reason we couldn't is because of the slide topper on our slide. If we parked into the wind we would risk it tearing off. Our next rig won't have a slide so we'll definitely park facing into the wind from now on.
Theres no rules in mexico....you just jump in and drive....truck and bus drivers are worst...no education.....amazingly out crappy govt lets them drive into usa
Overall we found the driving to be fairly decent in most of Baja. There are bad drivers everywhere. It was actually more calm and courteous that I had expected. Honestly better than parts of California. 😁
It's a giga ball pit
Thanks! Now we'll have to learn how to play.
This should have a comment thanking you every cold day of the year. I have alot of mechanical expertise and you still led me straight to a problem I'd been overlooking. Thank you!
Really appreciate you taking the time to let us know and glad we were able to help! 😀
😮😂
Loved this vid
Glad you enjoyed it and hope you found it has some useful information for you!
Hi. I’d love to know about the solution you found to deal with the curve of your roof. Did you end up using stainless steel washers to make the brackets level or something else? Thanks!
Attaching down as close to the side as possible turned out to be the answer. That's where our roof was flattest.
@@HomeARoam Ah, that was enough. I thought perhaps you did something in addition to that. Thanks for sharing!
Good video. Will definitely stay here in the future.
Thanks! We had a great stay there.
Can you dump cassette toilets in the park?
They have full hookups and septic, so it shouldn't be a problem!
I was a big confused by your prices. A lightly used class C can be bought for 40K. The price of a good used truck theses days is about that much. So, class C will most likely cost less than truck+trailer
Is it possible you are thinking in US dollars? We're Canadian and spoke in CAD for this video. A used relatively new class C costs around $80,000 here. Units in the 40K range are 10+ years old typically.
@@HomeARoam I don't think the currency matters. Unless truck prices are cheaper relative to trailers in Australia, compared to the US, then currency should not matter. In the US, I think it's safe to say that a reliable truck costs probably 2 times a trailer. Say, a decent trailer is 15K and a reliable lightly-used truck will be about 30K. So, when you put them together, that would cost you 45K, which is the price of a lightly used C class motorhome. So, it does not seem like the truck+trailer combo is a way to save upfront costs compared to class C. I'm not sure about maintenance costs but upfront costs seem similar.
It’s interesting to watch someone explore a place for the first time that you’ve known your whole life. I’d like to give you some advice about safety. Lots of the places you visited were in VERY bad parts of town. El Guero Canelo, Amy’s, the pottery place, and the botanical gardens are all in high crime areas of town. These are all places I’d still visit, but I keep my head on a swivel and focus on my surroundings. I noticed you walking to your car from Amy’s filming and talking, and then sitting in your car which made me cringe a little. Please enjoy your adventures as you do, just also be more aware of your surroundings, especially when you’re somewhere you’re unfamiliar with. BTW we just say “Sonoran dog” haha
Thank you so much for the advice, we appreciate you looking out for us! We always strive to be aware of our surroundings and appreciate the heads-up.
Would you guys happen to have GPS coordinates for this campsite? I've seen a lot of hit and miss reviews on the Boondocking in this area. I really appreciate your videos.
Hi there, sadly we don't have the coordinates, but we found it on iOverlander. However, as circumstances change regularly in Baja, it's always a good idea to check with locals and local Facebook pages before going. Baja Overlanding is a good one and the creator/moderator lives in San Felipe.
Where is sail switch located?
It sits right on top of the fan/blower. Slightly different on each furnace model. Try looking up your brand and model and hopefully someone has posted a picture or video showing exactly how to get to it.
Thanks!
Thank you for your content •••
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Thank you both!!
You're very welcome! Hope you found the information helpful.
As a permanent resident of Mexico (but still living in BC), I can say that you both did an excellent job with this video. We own a home in Los Cabos now, but I have done the drive towing larger boats and trailers over a dozen times from Canada or the US. There is not a word in this video that I would disagree with. Very well researched, organized, and yet still concise. Very nicely done.
Thank you so much for the kind words! We loved Baja so much, and we can't wait to go back! We plan to spend some time there again next winter once our new van is built out.
Tons of useful information, and links, thank you!
You're very welcome, so glad you found it useful!
Glad you enjoyed Tucson. It’s always interesting to see the places tourists find and enjoy. I’ve lived in Tucson my whole life (62years) and have never heard of Barrio Bread, never been to Amy’s Donuts or the Heritage Museum. I have only had a Sonoran Dog once.
Hahah, that's how it always is. We have so many things close to home we still have yet to do as well. Hopefully you'll be encouraged to go out and be a tourist in your own town. 😁
Haha I’ve never heard of barrio bread either and I work extremely close to there apparently
Tucson is a dump, move along folks !
We respectfully disagree and really enjoyed it there!
You are being too picky. It sounds like you enjoy shopping, but not really interested in owning. To get 100% of what you want, go with a custom van and pay twice a much. Also, you can make mods without voiding the warrant. In the U.S., the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act governs situations like this. According to this law, a manufacturer cannot deny a warranty claim solely because of modifications, unless the manufacturer can prove that the modification caused or contributed to the failure.
Well, we did take it to some higher-ups at Airstream, and they insisted they would not cover anything related to the electrical system if it was modified. Could we fight this in court? 🤷♂️ Maybe, but clearly not worth it. In the end, we did decide to go the custom route, and interestingly, we are on track get a much more capable van, exactly suited to our needs, for less money. It's just going to take a lot more time. 😀
I knew right at the start this was going to be a crapy video. 😜
LOL, yeah, I guess it was always destined to be a #2-caliber video. :)
regarding this type of toilet I have it directly from the area manger of the Sites and Trails around here AND the driver of the vac truck that empties the vault toilets in the unimproved Sites and Trails campgrounds that the contents of these so-called composting toilets are fine to put into a vault toilet. We specifically talked about the wood shavings. All you are left with it a pair of latex gloves and an empty kitchen catcher garbage bag...not much waste compared to the hardly ever recycled green 1 pound propane cylinders, right?
That's good to know! Would definitely cut down on the volume of solid waste going into the trash.
If you're interested in the Trelino toilet, we make a small commission if you use our links. Check them out here: tidd.ly/3ZCGAX8 and tidd.ly/3ZkGUIx
Love it. We run a Jackery for tv, and CPAP. NO NOT CRAP:CPAP. HAHAHA
Hahah, yes, those portable power stations are incredibly useful.
Glad to see you using it for activity.... will next adventure be sleeping bags and blow up mattress :) You both seem to really be embracing the process and having fun doing it.
Thanks, yes, we were really happy to get out and have some fun with it!
Do you have the tires on your van that many Promasters come with? The Nexen Rodian M+S ? If so, how did they do in the snow? Also, interesting is the Trelino doesn't have a fan. I don't have a composting toilet, we went with a cassette, so I am not commenting from any experience, just curious.
Yes, great question about the tires. Just the stock Nexens, and I was really worried when the snow started getting deep. But they actually performed decently! They're brand new, so they have lots of tread. From what I've heard the performance goes down quickly once the tread starts getting lower. I was considering swapping them out, but I think after that test, we'll keep them but keep a close eye on tread depth. Yes, no fan or venting on the Trelino, but there is the option to install one. We'll see how it does with smells once we start using it on a regular basis and go from there. 😀
I don't know if you can add a bidet to that type of toilet but if you can, the savings on tp will pay for the bidet in the first month. They cost around $26 on Amazon.
That's a good idea, but for this type of toilet, it wouldn't work unfortunately. The idea is to keep the "solids" (aka number two) as dry as possible to reduce smell and make it easy to dispose of.
Great video. Glad you guys are getting out and enjoying yourselves. Happy New Year.
Thank-you, and a very Happy New Year to you too! We definitely had fun making this one.
