regarding this type of toilet I have it directly from the area manger of the Sites and Trails around here AND the driver of the vac truck that empties the vault toilets in the unimproved Sites and Trails campgrounds that the contents of these so-called composting toilets are fine to put into a vault toilet. We specifically talked about the wood shavings. All you are left with it a pair of latex gloves and an empty kitchen catcher garbage bag...not much waste compared to the hardly ever recycled green 1 pound propane cylinders, right?
I don't know if you can add a bidet to that type of toilet but if you can, the savings on tp will pay for the bidet in the first month. They cost around $26 on Amazon.
That's a good idea, but for this type of toilet, it wouldn't work unfortunately. The idea is to keep the "solids" (aka number two) as dry as possible to reduce smell and make it easy to dispose of.
Do you have the tires on your van that many Promasters come with? The Nexen Rodian M+S ? If so, how did they do in the snow? Also, interesting is the Trelino doesn't have a fan. I don't have a composting toilet, we went with a cassette, so I am not commenting from any experience, just curious.
Yes, great question about the tires. Just the stock Nexens, and I was really worried when the snow started getting deep. But they actually performed decently! They're brand new, so they have lots of tread. From what I've heard the performance goes down quickly once the tread starts getting lower. I was considering swapping them out, but I think after that test, we'll keep them but keep a close eye on tread depth. Yes, no fan or venting on the Trelino, but there is the option to install one. We'll see how it does with smells once we start using it on a regular basis and go from there. 😀
Oh whoops, that's my fault (Jay). There was a scene with Mel preparing and getting wipes and toilet paper but I cut it. But yes, we'll be using wipes until we have a water system. Once the van is fully built out of course, we'll have running water with a sink to wash our hands at.
Interestingly, most composting toilets will fill up before they produce any amount of soil, so even the ones that are vented and get churned need to be emptied before they compost.
I always shudder when I see videos of people using the composted poop in their edible gardens! Plants love to uptake antibiotics and hormones and who knows what else from medications etc! No thank you! Much prefer your plan.

That's good to know! Would definitely cut down on the volume of solid waste going into the trash.
