Beehive Basin Trail Run (Big Sky, Montana)
Beehive Basin Trail No. 40
Link To All Trails: www.alltrails.com/ar/trail/us/montana/beehive-basin-trail-no-40
Beehive Basin has some of the best views at Big Sky. It is popular among hikers, campers, and backcountry skiers. This location offers scenic landscapes of alpine meadows and in the summer, fields of wildflowers. During the fall, visitors can spot wildlife such as elks, moose, brown bears, and black bears. This trail has some sections that are steep, rocky, and muddy.
Today Tara and I went for some adventure in Big Sky. If you are a trail runner this is a great trail. It was a little busy but the trail was wide enough in most spots that we were easily able to pass. It took us a little over and hour to get to the turn around with lots of picture taking.

How To Choose Salomon ADV Skin 5 vs 12 (Best Salomon Running Pack) Finding my first running vest for running trail ultramarathons was on of the hardest things I've had to do in running. Once I narrowed down the company choices to Salomon I realized that they have a number of running packs to chose from. I kept hearing about the ADV Skin 5 and 12. i figured out that intervall, speed/tempo sessions are not so good with a certain age. I only do zone 2 basis endurance training with lot of volume and have no injuries at all. Just increase mileage by 5% each week.

      35-40 miles puts me in a place the satisfies the mental joy running gives me and also allows me to just into another training block somewhere easily. My volume time wise doesn’t really change becuase I love to move. But in “offseason” I just cut running a little and add bike, swim, ski, etc

    The bad part is that newest version doesn't have soft hem on a edges anymore. The scratch mesh is folded over and stiched, creating very sharp edge that rubs neck, and in my case, collar bones if you don't wear shirt or shirt with wider neck opening. I have pervious ADV 12 and love it then got 5 this year and rubbed me raw on my collar bone. I ran my fingers along the edge, trying to figure out why. It was like sharp plastic fiber sticking out. I haven't noticed that design has changed.

    • @bradfinntrains

      Not sure what you mean. I just got a brand new 5L and it’s identical to my old one. Maybe you got a defect. Although, I would never expect not to chafe if i wore it bareback. I’ve never met anyone that has worn any pack for an ultra with no shirt on and didn’t get dominated. Water is not a lubricant.

    Great video! I am preparing for my first Grindstone 100k for 2024 right now. Out of the 65 miles how many miles do you feel are runnable? I have been studying the elevation view and the course just curious to your opinion. Ready to embrace the suck and get it done

    • @bradfinntrains
      @bradfinntrains 21 день тому

      I would actually say it’s “pretty runnable” for the most part. More than I initially thought. The first 5 and last 3 are pretty much on the road. There are a ton of fire/gravel roads. What hurt me was my lack of training on long hard technical climbs. I had only done rolling elevation. The entire races elevation pretty much comes in 3 climbs. If you can’t put ur head down and grind up a 15% grade for 50-70 min they will start to chew u up mentally. That last climb after camp Todd add is a HUGE milestone in race. Get to the top of that feeling good and your golden

    A Houdini under a pack would sweat me out in minutes except on a very sub freezing day w the zip down. Maybe. But the Airshed’s much more of a “put on, leave on” piece. For short cold stops a Storm Racer’s quick to toss on & lock out all wind & water if needed yet still very light.

    I have used Spring for a long time. I came to them via Ginger Runner colabs. I genuinely enjoy the product, but in hindsight, the last couple batches of Awesome Suace have seemed to not give me the same energy. What I think happened is this. When they started out as a cottage company they were great. The various high profile colabs boosted the demand beyond their production abilities. I'm gonna speculate that they at some point switch to mass producing a concentrate that could be diluted for packaging. With that there should have been increased QA/QC, there was not and here we are. I'm not overly upset, but what this has done is given me the desire to try out new products. So until they have it squared away that is what I am doing. Gave Maurten's a try the past two long runs. Whether in my head or not I felt like my energy carried longer into my run.

    I have both, and my logic is that even if the 5 works for 90% of what I do, the 12 works for 100% of what I do. At this point the 5 is just a spare. Also do be careful on sizing. They do not size the same, meaning a M in one is not necessarily a M in the other. I have the same size in both (I think S) and while the 5 is great, the 12 fits just a tad tight. It's ok, but if I ever replace it I'll size up. There's enough range that it might not matter.

    • @bradfinntrains
      @bradfinntrains Місяць тому

      I would have to respectfully disagree. The 10% you are talking about may not be worth the added cost to some. And the sizing for me, as well as my wife with the women’s sizes have been spot on. Have a great day

    • @wk633
      @wk633 Місяць тому

      @@bradfinntrains But when that 10% comes up, you're stuck buying a new pack (like I did). And then it's not $20 saved. If you know you'll never ever need, or even have good use for, the 12, sure, save $20. I'm guessing $20 is a pretty small portion of what most of us spend on trail running. A lot of people spend that on gels for one training run. They money I'd save skimping on a pack, I make up for by making my own gels 🙂.
