Bringing Refreshing Views of the planets and deep space with camera and notebook from a garden observatory.
Mark Radice is an amateur astronomer and photographer based near Salisbury in England (a stone’s throw from Stonehenge) with a passion for observing the night sky.
He started actively observing using a borrowed pair of binoculars when comet Hyakutake crossed the sky in [too many years ago now!] and now enjoys using his own equipment from a garden observatory.
Astronomical interests include high resolution lunar and planetary imaging; live stacking the deep sky; sketching and binocular observing - all with a cup of tea. Surprisingly, he was shortlisted for the 2021 AstroPhotography of the Year competition.
Mark writes for Astronomy Now; enjoys visiting dark skies and star parties in the UK and overseas; and writes too infrequently on his own blog at www.refreshingviews.com.

Very cool! Lots to take in :)
This is a fantastic tutorial and I love the sympathic attitude. Well done, mate
Glad you enjoyed it. Clear skies to you.
I can't tell you how many times I left the Bat Mask on the scope, and then starting imaging. Eventually I bought a focus motor. 8-)
Ouch! I think we’ve all been there haven’t we?
Great review and suggestions for cutting down peripheral light, thanks! I have two questions: I live in an area prone to fogging lenses. Any tips for dealing with that? Also, to go along with the bandit and lens shield, what filter, exactly, is used to cut down the light pollution in the suburbs? Thanks so much. I’ve been following astrophysics with great interest for a couple of years and have been looking at telescopes. I’ll be retired in a couple of years, and will be able to travel to dark skies in the American west. These look like a very good addition to be able to look up without any setup or takedown, and to get a constellation size part of the sky. I’m down to this pair, or the newer Canon 10x42 L IS WP. From my understanding, 10x would allow you to see whole constellations, but with IS, it seems to me the 15x would allow you to see more detail, though perhaps cropping several constellations. Is that a fair assessment? Do you have any thoughts about this? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You can get dew heaters but they’re bit of a faff for binos so I sometimes use a hairdryer. Of course if you stop observing pop the dust covers on. As for LP filters I don’t use any but you’d have to find a way to mount them on the lenses or eyepieces. To answer your question re size that’s a never ending question. I’d suggest working out how you like to observe eg wide field or close ups and then choose.
@@RefreshingViews Thanks for your reply! I’ll be retiring in ~3 years, at which time I plan to convert a van for camping, which will give me a lot of room for astronomy gear. I’m pretty certain I’ll get a Celestron 8”EdgeHD telescope with a SkyWatcher HEQ-5 mount, but for equipment that will form a system, I don’t want to buy after binging UA-cam videos, only to find I didn’t know to ask crucial questions that would have made a difference in my decision. I do want to get the gear and learn to use it so I have time to learn the scope at home, even though I’m in the suburb light pollution zone, but I’m not in a hurry. I decided I’d start out with binoculars, which led me to image stabilized ones (from previous experience). I can use them for other things, as well, but I’m getting them to refresh my knowledge of the night sky (even though the Star finding and tracking scopes allow you to skip this, I’d rather see the wide open dark sky as an old friend that I’m familiar with. I just received The Backyard Astronomer’s Guide, which has a ton of great information. Anyway, it came down to this set (Canon 15x75 IS) and the newer Canon 10-42 L IS WP. I’m convinced that I will like the extra magnification and will still have a field of view that’s reasonable. Your suggestions of the bandit and lens hoods should make dealing with my neighbors’ porch lights more tolerable. I’ll probably go ahead and get a pair of light pollution filters (couldn’t you use 52mm filters and screw them in before the lens hood?) to see if they make a good difference. Does this sound like a good plan to you?
What rig is that? A Lunt on the counterweight side is completely new to me
It’s an AZEQ6 set up in alt Az mode. Great fun.
Super cool, my dob is 10”, just how much more can you see in comparison? I’ve never had an opportunity to look through a larger scope.
It’s amazing! Details and star clouds visible in galaxies; surface markings on Jovian moons; Sirius affects your night vision. Amazing!
Hi Chris thanks for the great video, as always. I’m about to pull the trigger on a pair of these but considering 18x50. Do you think that’s too dialled in and rather go for 15x50?
It’s up to you! You can look up the field of view and make a choice. 15x is a nice compromise but I don’t think you’d be disappointed with the 18x.
thanks, I got the 18x50 and happy so far. By the way I also have a C11 but clouds in London over the last year have been quite frustrating. Hopefully better by Q4.
Oh hell yes!
Must do some more sketching - you notice so much more when you try to draw it :)
You definitely must! My astronomy knowledge only started really improving when I started drawing things :)
Go for it Andy. Let us know how you get on.
Excellent video Mark
Glad you enjoyed it Steve :)
Thanks 👍
Very interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Mary is so knowledgable - make sure you follow her on the socials.
inspired to draw again....thank you xxx
Oh please do!
Great stuff! Let us know how you get on.
Love my Am3. With a cw bar and weight, it handles a Meade 8 sct with full imaging gear behind it.
Oh wow that must be quite a set up. Glad it’s working well for you.
Could u be able to share me the dimensions and materials used and everything that was required for this mount as i have some project on this and am interested in doing this so could u please give me the required info
can i get the specifications like materials required and length as such so that i can apply thm into my project
Solar transits are cool! Great final image!
I have this mount from last 6 months but when the load is around 8 kg, the performance on long exposure time (more than 90 seconds) is poor. Star elongation and u will be attaching counter weight certainly destroys the basic idea of purchasing this mount. And in my case using quattaro reflector 150 mm even with counter weight the tracking is still terrible. So better to go for am5. I will not recommend it certainly. It is just like a fancy star tracker.
Great to see you both ❤
Hi Mark - Great review. You mentioned the weight limitation of the AZ GTI is 5kg. Can you please tell me if the weight of your complete telescope setup, including OTA, dovetail, rings, finder, diagonal, bino-viewer and eyepieces exceeds the 5kg limit? I asking because I'm trying to determine if the mount would support a 102mm refractor that has a OTA that weighs 4kg plus the, dovetail, rings, finder, diagonal and eyepiece. Cheers?
If I use a cooled camera in Firecapture is there a way to control my cameras cooling? If not could I use ASCAP to control cooling?
I’m not too sure, none of my cameras have cooling. Does the manual / guide have cooling control?
Excellent thanks :)
You're welcome, Andy.
"sustainable" lol, all that gear comes from China...
Yours is one of my fav YT channels , and now multiplied by this wonderful video with Mary . What a fascinating insight to her set up . One question , what direction is the back garden facing ? Very jealous of the fact you have a lovely clear out look , Mary .
Thank you Stuart. The back garden is NW facing, so the hill behind shields us from light pollution but the downside is that it often cuts off aurora and noctilucent clouds. But we'll take that for the amazing view we have :)
So glad you enjoyed it Stuart and yes Mary is fantastic. We had a great afternoon talking astronomy kit and observing projects.
Interesting tour Mark. A very knowledgeable and accomplished couple.
Glad you enjoyed it, David. They’ve got a great set up in a lovely garden haven’t they?
@@RefreshingViews I can relate to all of it. She reminded me of the man who used to walk around with a cat on his shoulder at the BAA meetings in the 1960's (sorry Mary😀) Patrick would have been at home there too.
@@davidhenderson1073 I spend a significant amount of my day with at least one cat on my shoulder. Both of my tortoiseshell cats think they're parrots, lol!
Great video Mark and what a lovely lady!
We agree, Steve. fantastic set up and great company.
@@RefreshingViews I would love to send her a 52mm 2-inch fit eyepeice for her outreach and visual work!
A beautiful Video good luck my friend you and this beautiful lady ❤
Thank you! You too!
The tripod spreader nailed to the wall speaks of someone, like myself, who has been unable to find it at the start of a session lol
That made me chuckle! Cheers.
we've all been there!
That was great to watch. Lots of info way beyond me. Would love to know more of the RPi setup. Regards
Cheers Rory - follow Mary as she writes great material for all levels.
Hi Rory, if you're interested in the RPi meteor camera set ups, type Pop Astro Meteor Camera into Google and you'll find the in depth article my husband Mark wrote all about how you set one up. He's part of the Global Meteor Network coding team so he's tried to make the article as easy to understand as possible
£1000 you are joking. Just to save swapping eyepieces. No thank you.
I think you may have a point! It was great fun but is at the higher end my price point - and that’s before you factor in the weight.
What would you do if you have an obstructed north view with Polaris not visible? At present I can use my Synscan polar alignment process.
The only thing I can draw is my breath. Great video Mark. Some more videos on EAA please.
Fantastic video. Really enjoyed this. 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm surprised I didn't see Mono jump on Mary's shoulder throughout the video, thanks for the tour clear skies!!
I'm pretty surprised that either Eevee or Mono didn't end up on my shoulder at some point!
Maybe one of them will another time lol
Neat.
Had to sell two awesome telescopes over the years because of two dumb broads. Got my 3rd scope and learnt my lessons. 3rd scope is better than the other two scopes i had combined. To all amateur astronomers out there, if your forced into a situation of the scope or the broad choose the scope any way possible!!!!
That made me chuckle - I hope all is well with your choices these days.
As a way of capturing a wider dynamic range and not blow out the highlights, can you capture some photos at a reduced exposure time (darker) and then merge them together? In the [non-astro] photography world we call this bracketing. I feel like it should work with astrophotography as well.
Yes you can do that and combine them with either a layer mask or HDR software.
was your pier spacer ordered or local made?
It was made at work - cost me packet of coffee, tea and biscuits for the machinists’ tea break.
Which software did you use?
I think that’s photoshop elements from memory - the same process works on gimp, photoshop , affinity so use what you have.
Nice one thanks. I had noticed that the pier extension had changed but thought maybe it had a removable cover or something :) Were you just using sidereal tracking for the comet or is there something fancy you were using. Last time I did this I didn't have much luck stacking a comet using the comet mode on deep sky stacker.
Yes these are just short exposures tracking as normal. After a few minutes (say more than 5) you can see the comet move against the background stars. I’ve tried using the align on comet mode in SharpCap but without much success.
Hi, have you noticed any kind of stickiness or degradation on the rubber Armour of these? There are very high amounts of reports of the rubber on these "melting" and becoming sticky over the years. Always really wanted a set, but the thought of that kind of scared me.
After 15 years I have a small, postage stamp sized sticky patch so have yet to paint some varnish on to get it to go away.
I didn't see you fitting the heater strap on the C11. Did you have to fit it under the insulation and back a bit to allow the dew shield to fit?
That’s right.
Thanks Mark 👍.
I have just bought myself the same mount but i much prefer using it in EQ mode. I am also just about to put Reflectix on my new scope but have no idea how to fix it to the telescope tube. How did you secure the insulation on your C11? I already have a dew heater strap and standard dew shield for the scope. I eagerly await your reply. Thanks Mark.
I bought some silver-foil tape, allowed a few inches of overlap (5cm in proper units :-)) and just taped it down.
One question about the star alignment. If the mount went to the first star, and it’s not in the middle of the eyepiece, do I have to move the mount manually to center the star or via the knobs of the app?
I use the motors
@@RefreshingViews Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻😊

Hello, what is the reason for putting an IR filter? thanks for the video.
Because the camera sensors are sensitive to the IR. If you put an IR cut filter on it, it gives a cleaner image.
I'll be trying to find thst Comet. Will it be there for a while. I asume so ,since it's still far from sun.
Go for it - it’s a great sight. I use this website to plan my comet observing: cometchasing.skyhound.com
Thanks much. I wanted to "see" if I could find it last night. Now I'll be able to chase it.
Nice video, as usual Mark.
Glad you enjoyed it Peter
Great video ... The AM3 will be my next purchase or the ioptron AZ pro .. being mainly visual i reckon the optron makes more sense but there is something lovely about the AM3 😊
I don’t you’ll go wrong with either Stuart. Let me know how you get on. Decisions! Decisions.
