Always appreciate the video's and learning from them, life can get in the way! Myself going from terrible planetary images to pretty decent ones is always rewarding, its a journey after all, but I do admit, even terrible images are exciting at the beginning.
Yes totally agree - it’s great fun isn’t it (and even more important when life is getting in the way!!).
Great video Mark. I’ve missed your tutorials the past year. You are one of a few amateur astronomers I trusted to teach me planetary and lunar imaging two years ago. I love this hobby. If I may, AS!4 just came out last week. It’s version 4.04. Same interface but it runs much faster. Image quality is is the same or maybe a little better

Yes, I always like Saturn. Although it is pretty I do find it quite undramatic compared to say Jupiter.

I think astronomy is keeping us sane here :) We've had cloudy weather for weeks now and I can tell you I'm at my wit's end 😢 Anyway i'm just going through your Winjupos video for pointers, the weather might be better next week I want to be prepared to capture jupiter. Great Video! Should I use my ASI183MC Pro for planetary imaging or my ASI120MC? Does it matter? I ask because the 120MC is called a planetary cam. But the 183MC is a step up in quality. I usually use the 120MC as a guide cam. Thanks again!
Not sure without reading the specs. There is an online calculator (somewhere) that calculates the best pixels for your scope aperture and f-ratio. Try it and let us know how you get on!
Hello. Mark nice that your back with ever more interesting content, with such digital control over image content information on such images is there a possibility of that detail information being corrupted.
Cheers John. You’re right, in fact the BAA ALPO and other professional bodies won’t take images produced with AI algorithms for fear of introducing artefacts and false information - even though it’s pleasing to the eye.
Beautiful! What focuser do you use and how is it attached to your telescope?
It’s the standard OVL / Skywatcher SCT Crayford focuser. I’ve bodged a SW autofocuser using a 3D printed bracket for vibration free focusing.

Hi Mark, nice video. I didn’t see a comparison of using WINJUPOS vs not. We have pretty bad seeing where I am North America (Vermont) and I’ve tried taking advantage of WINJUPOS with my asi224MC camera, but honestly I never see any benefits. The stacked WINJUPOS image is typically no better than the best of my individual stacked and processed images. My brother, also in North America (Michigan) has significantly better seeing, uses the same camera, and can’t see a benefit either. I’m curious as to the differences you might be seeing. I can certainly understand why a mono-shooter needs WINJUPOS given the various filters and the need to align the features which are moving pretty quickly on Jupiter. In any case, it would be nice to show with/without WINJUPOS and how things are improved. It could be that we just don’t have good enough seeing or our techniques are wanting.
Hi Terri - hope you are well. Have you tried a gentle sharpening of the derotated image? I put mine into Photoshop and give it a gentle unsharp mask and it reveals further fine details without, importantly, bringing out the noise. I'll add it to my next video (just doing a detailed version of the Saturn processing click by click!).
Hi Mark, we’re well, albeit cold, here in Vermont. We’ve had a cold start to winter along with our normal blanketed skies in November and December. We hope to see you in February at WSP24. In reading what you wrote, and look forward to your next video, but not entirely clear on what you’re suggesting. Are you suggesting WINJUPOS on a single video stream with sharpening or multiple video streams? I’ve tried it on multiple streams in a sequence, and then stacking and sharpening those images to no better result. I typically do not apply sharpening to individual stacks prior to WINJUPOS and final stacking of the various derotated results. For me, I can likely chalk things up to horrible seeing, but my brother gets decent seeing in Michigan/USA and sees nothing much better.
What sort of frame rate are you capturing with Mark? I seem to be able to get a faster rate using Sharpcap at the same settings ie: gain, exposure and ROI.
I think I am getting 50 fps with Saturn ie 20millisec exposures. I normally go for 10ms on Jupiter but it is so much brighter. Interesting that you get faster data through Sharpcap as I would expect the two software tools to give equal performance (all things being equal). I will have to try this out next time.
