Hello friends! Today I’m playing with my new Caran D’Ache colored pencil set! My goal was to use as many colors as possible, but I think I’ve only used about half the box, if even! This box has sooooooo many colors and they were a dream to work with! I’d like to mention that this is not a sponsored video. My husband bought this set for me for my birthday. I just really love them 🙂 So I hope you...

Testing of the Paul Rubens Art Watercolors Continued on Textured Paper

Hello all! I’m continuing my testing with the new Paul Rubens Art set today, using the front side of the Baohong paper this time, because I wanted to see how it would granulate on rougher paper. I really like it, but as always, the rough surface just does a number on my pens. I don’t mind it, but it’s something I want to point out, in case you want to try it out for yourself. Hot pressed paper is much more difficult to use. The surface is pretty different from the NOT. If I want to distribute a wash evenly on this paper I do it wet on wet. And no fiddling, this is the reason for the streaks. Although the paint might sitting on top of the paper it dries much quicker. And if you fiddle with this area there will be no even wash left. I began my watercolor adventure on this kind of paper and man what was I frustrated, because it was so difficult to use. If you are used to NOT paper stick with it. It is much easier and much more forgiving. ❤❤❤

I have so many arches papers and had never such an issue. Return it. I do really think that there is something wrong with this specific one. But I think you will never be friends again with arches. Nevertheless there is no reason to keep a obviously damaged or somekind wrong paper. I wished you would have made my experience with this wonderful papers. But honestly, everything is just a matter of taste and that is everyone’s own cup of tea. ❤

If you squeeze a little air out of the bottle before putting your bead of paint on the opening and then let the air in again, would it pull the paint into the bottle better?

What did you decide is your favorite paper to use. I’ve been using arches cold press & haven’t noticed a smell. So perhaps something to do with it being cold press❓. So far the only thing I dislike about the Arches is that it warps & is difficult to get it flat again.

My all time favorite is the Bee paper, but so far I have only found it in one size. Granted, I haven't looked very hard either😆 My second favorite would have to be the Baohong, but I like to work on the smoother back side. This one can take loads of water, which works well for me. Both of these are cold pressed. The Hahnemühle and the stinky Arches are the first hit pressed ones I've used so far. I'll keep exploring, but I probably won't be buying any more Arches, sadly.

OMG the 2 year old painting is soooooo gorgeous❣️❣️. But then, I think everything you do is. Can’t wait to see how the present one comes out. I’m relatively new to your channel, a matter of months, not years. Wish I had discovered this type of art long before I did. It appeals to my logical side with all the précise lines & doodles. But then it’s so beautiful too with the colors you choose.

Welcome to my little art corner then! I'm really happy you found me 🫶🏻 I'm about to send off the painting I did for the winner of my giveaway and then I will wait until she gets it, before I will post the video 😊 so probably about two more weeks or so. I was 52 when I rediscovered art, and it took me a good year to find what I like. I feel the same about wishing I had found my art style sooner, but everything happens for a reason. Now, I have the time to truly dive in and explore, which I wouldn't have had back then, so I guess it all worked out 😊 I hope you get to make the most of the time you can allow yourself to dedicate to play around, and I'm happy my videos will be there to keep you company 💕❤️

It's an old, raggedy brush from Artist Loft (Michaels brand). I think I actually used two different kinds, but what's important, is to use one that has stiff bristles (usually an old one will do great, you can even cut some bristles out, to make it more shaggy), and to use fairly dry paint. I found it doesn't work well with wetter paint, esp if the brush is soft. I hope this helps.

  • @kathyarrr

Try prepping your paper with a water wash before using it. It will soften the fibres and remove some of the sizing which will allow the paint to penetrate the paper more, this may resolve some of the streaking issues. I tape the paper to a surface, you don’t have to but it does control the curling, then apply a very generous coat of clear water across the entire surface with a brush, checking in the light to make sure there are no dry areas. Let that water soak into the paper until there is no visible water on the surface, it just looks damp. I then apply another mopping of water and leave it to dry completely. When I come back to the dried paper it accepts that paint much more readily without having to use as much water. I do this for all of my paper including watercolour sketchbooks I just find that little bit of prep pays off. I always enjoy your videos and have liked watching your style evolve over time.

My lines are pretty shaky sometimes….You are an amazing artist. Too bad about the smelly paper….but glad that you found the hot press would work so well with yr pencils. I love Miss Betsi too! Interestingly I found you first, fell in love with your doodle style, then found Betsi. Now, I try to incorporate both of your styles when I'm doodling. I think they are both so unique and fascinating. I will say I prefer your "looser" style of laying down the background color. I've tried doing that too but just seem to end up with mud! I'll just have to keep trying. Anyway, thanks for the video. It's always a pleasure to watch you. Take care.

I love hot press paper, but it isn’t the easiest paper to use. Arches is one of my favorites. Looks like you’re using Cotman watercolors? I find the better water color paints may give you a better result. Also, by letting the paints dry naturally is best. I’ll now finish watching the painting process. ClaudiaSJI

    • @_bettina_fernandez_

@@_bettina_fernandez_ best of luck with the papers! For me the smell is off putting but I try and keep going. After the initial water application you will find that the smell is less. I paint with a fair amount of water and actually LIKE that it doesn’t immediately sink into the paper. This allows me to take the paint off or modify the colors a bit more. We all have our own”style” and likes and dislikes so it’s fine that you’re not an Arches fan. What you do is super cool and I’m enjoying watching you a lot. For me the surface you use is THE most important thing. You can apply paint with anything, and many things will provide a color or tone, but the surfaces you use will make or break many art pieces! Thanks for sharing your art process with us all! ClaudiaSJI

Lol! I bought a pack of Arches Hot last summer and did not have this experience. It's gelatin, not a big deal. For quality paper hot pressed paper ingredients such as animal gelatin offers the high quality Arches is. The shine in the paper and cohesivness. Wearing a mask is ridiculous. Just put the pad out side. FYI, Vegan is a made up word by crazies. I guess you are against Tallow as well? Our animals provide us all that we need to survive. I love Arches, absolutely beautiful paper. You are quite the complainer, of COURSE hot press absorbs paint differently! It also makes paint look rich. How do you cook? I hope you are not married, driving your husband nuts with your complaining. I am unsubing.

    • @_bettina_fernandez_
      @_bettina_fernandez_ 3 дні тому

Wow. I think your comment is a bit aggressive as far as the vegan part goes. I'm not vegetarian nor vegan. I'm not against anything. I pointed out the gelatin ingredient, because if you've ever worked with gelatin, you know how nasty it smells. I should have made the connection before I bought it, that is all. I think it's fair of me to mention the smell and that my experience with Arches hasn't been the best. I also said that it was MY experience and that I know others love Arches. Don't make assumptions about people.

Thank you 💕 I'm not worried about it too much. I'm sure I can find other uses for it. If not, I'll just donate it 😊

Lovely video with lovely art. <3 Well... watercolour and hot pressed paper... is a thing. XD It does tend to streak almost regardless of brand. A not very wet paint on dry paper works the best, and large areas are hard to avoid streaks on. It is not you who do anything wrong. :) It is just hard for most people to get a larger flat wash onto hot press. If you find the secret let me know! I have tried to soak the paper totally before adding paint, and yea that didn't go all that well either. It makes drying rims and back washes and what not. For abstracts I do not mind the streaks and back washes and what other things the paint might do when left to do what it does. Personally I think it adds to the visual interest. For flat on HP paper, -gouache is better. Either traditional or acrylic. But that on the other hand can be hard on the pens. :/

Thank you for all the great tips! I appreciate it. I can definitely see it working better with different mediums. It was my first time working with it, so I was expecting a learning curve 😊 I will continue experimenting as I really do love the smooth texture of it. Doodling and coloring with my pencils was a dream!

I have the same 2 struggles with color in this set as you do. Ginger Mecelfresh has a series on abstract using different combos from the art nouveau set. Your piece came out really nice! Thanks for sharing.
