In my experience they run better on pump gas if you use a smaller mantle. I actually cut mine down and use a single strand of thin copper wire as a tie-off. Worked amazing. Still threw lots of light but you didnt have so much flame and smoke when lighting. Cool video, ive yet to have to clean the generator or do your little needle twirl thing tho.

Nice Vid. You're holding the Channel Lock pliers backwards. If you turn an adjustable wrench or this channel-lock the other way, it will tighten the jaw clamping pressure as you put force on it.

May I suggest a diagnostics video. Knowing what parts need to be replaced would preclude.taking apart the assemblies that are functioning correctly, and the risks of destruction ever present disassembly of old, frozen, and rusted parts. I hate to mess up parts fixing something that was not broken to start with. Also, I use a large old muffin tray for parts. The holes are numbered, and the parts from each sequential step go into sequential holes, making reassembly more obvious. An egg carton also works, but is very easy to upset. Thanks for a good video. P.S. You are not the only one to hunt for a piece you are already holding.

Frank. Great video series and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and insights. I have a Coleman 421B made by Coleman Canada. I’m having issues getting it to light. Pump pressure is excellent but when I do your Vapour test as you have shown in the video, I only get air with no vapour at all. Could you point me in the right direction on how to fix? Is this a check valve failure? Thanks for your help.

I am over 80 years old. I have been using auto gasoline for over 60 years. Long ago Amoco Hi-Test was the only unleaded fuel you could buy at the pump. I used Coleman fuel back when it was $3.00 a gallon. Last time I was in Walmart, the off brand camp fuel cost the same as Coleman brand, $18.99 a gallon. I have been burning gasoline a long time. I do ventilate the space well, but I do that with Coleman fuel too. It seems a tiny bit less bright, but I prefer a single mantle lamp, and a bit less light is no big thing. Where I live I can still pick up an old lantern for $10:00 or so. I keep a couple of gallons of gas through hurricane season, and put it in my car when it gets a little old. For 20 bucks I have plenty of light and stove, even if the power is off for a month. If I use the gear right, I never have any problems. There are still a lot of stoves around, from when there was no electricity in rural areas. I like a Coleman stove better than an electric one. The Coleman brings back memories of a lifetime of camping every time I light it, and the stove and a percolator have brought a lot of new friends to my camps. It is good to see younger guys preserving these beautiful old Coleman products. thanks for a great video.

Thank you so much for all the pointers. I have been working on these lanterns since i was in the Boy Scouts in the early 70's . When one malfunctioned i would bring it home and my dad and i would fix it. He could fix anything and i picked up that Gene. Bought 3 at a yard sale not long ago but here is the jewel. 1965 220F which i kept for myself. Followed your directions and i have a brand new lantern. I fixed the other 2 and gave them to a good friend that helps me all the time.

I recently got a Coleman 502 and noticed it dose not pressurize when I pump it up. What could be causing that the check valve or the pump leather?

I've got a ? My 2 burner manual says to fill with 13oz of fuel. But it holds more. I've been using pint liquor bottles. And I use a 750 ml bottle for storage/ transport of fuel. My tank took an entire 750 ml. Now, I know about the void, and never overflow since using my system. Just how much fuel is correct? I get about an hour out of 375 ml, but just curious.

Thank you for the good learning video. I would like to make you a suggestion. Among numerous lantern manufacturers, Coleman is the only one that maintains a lantern mass production system. Thanks to this, it is still possible to purchase new lanterns at a low price. I have owned NorthStar Gasoline in the past, We are currently using Premium Dual Fuel (285A), Powerhouse Dual Fuel (295A), Single Mantle (286A), and Kerosene (639C) lanterns. I live in Korea. In Korea, Japan, and China, 285A, 286A, 295A, 639C, and NortStar can still be purchased as new models at low prices. Please tell people who are still buying new lanterns how to maintain these lanterns. You could teach beginners how to maintain a lantern in an easy-to-understand way. That video will become a steady-selling video for a long time and will be viewed by many people. Some of those people will naturally grow up to be old Coleman lantern enthusiasts. And you will earn money from UA-cam.

This is great, thanks, I will be making one of these devices over the next few days. Question: is the 1/4" tubing an outside diameter measure or an inside diameter measure? (Guessing outer, but maybe it is inner diameter and then the goal is just to really snugly push 3/8" of the outer diameter through the cork so it is super pressure-tight?)
