  • Part 3 of the 3 part series rebuilding a Coleman Camp stove that can be used for any 2 or 3 burner Coleman gas camping stove models ranging from the 1940's to present. In this episode, Frank reassembles the 426B stove and cooks burgers on the stove. Get Frank's mouthwatering burger recipe too!!

I’m restoring my family’s 425B, bought new soon after my parents marriage in 1960. It accompanied us on our annual family vacations throughout my childhood. Thank you so much for your lucid videos, Frank. It will make the restoration much easier once I get started.

Frank...you are doing such a service to the community. Your videos are perfect. You know all the tips and tricks to prevent problems that most if us would stumble into and become frustrated. Your wife's camera work is great. I like how we get to see the little bits up close. I wonder how much of this cleaning Coleman would do for the $55?! Not much I suspect.
One of the things that I love about the Coleman ethos is the simplicity, the lack of superfluous ornamentation, and the incredible durable and serviceability. It enrages me how most of us have come to accept shoddy quality products and juat throw things into the landfill because parts are not available two years later or it just can't be repaired. The stoves and lanterns represent the older ethos of designing and building things correctly with both economy AND durability in mind. I also love how all the products are date stamped in such a straightforward manner, rather than complicated date codes that require research.
The physical interaction with the stove or lantern, the modicum of knowledge and skill it takes to run them, the hiss, the warmth, the smell of the burnt fuel mixing with coffee, pancakes and bacon along with the pine trees and Off! The memories with family and friends... These are things that are so human in an increasingly inhuman world. I treasure these items and i really value your knowledge and your willingness to pass it all on to us so that we can continue to carry the torch......so to speak....hahaha.😅
Thanks again for all your good work. I owe you many drinks and some pancakes and bacon.😊

Wonderful series of videos. I have a leaking valve nut and am using your videos to confidently take off the knob and valve nut, to replace the graphite packing to see if I can fix. My 425F is in mint condition but over the last 25 years of lack of use, has developed the leaking problem, and it pains me that my problem can be fixed with some elbow-grease and likely a $3 part, but that I don't have the know-how. Watching you restore this old stove is a thing of beauty and inspiration. Thank you for sharing your know-how on here! Blessings!

Excellent presentation Frank. It's always great to watch a subject matter expert give a "hands on" demonstration. You are definitely a "pro." You speak clearly and with emphasis. Your points are always reinforced with your practical knowledge of use and you bring in those little pointers to do or avoid that make it "quaint." You kept the pace and captured my imagination. I was completely focused during all 3 parts of your rebuild video. Including the mundane task of just washing the case and top. I watched as you suds up a pile of suds, which I personally don't do cleaning w/ dish soap. Rather, using way too much, I put full concentration soap on a scrubbing pad to loosen the grease and what not. I do not make many suds, just get everything loosened up and rinse it off. But, that is not where I was going to go with my comment. FYI: I am a middle child of 9 brothers and sisters, and recall when I was about 5, maybe 1957, we went into the backwoods of upper Michigan to a one room cabin on a lake that was a hunting shack that my Dad and Uncles owned. In fact that's what we lovingly called it: "The Shack." My Mother was aghast when my Dad pulled out the old 2 burner Coleman camp stove that she was expected to cook on for the entire family. But that was the last I recall of the issue. I know I ate and so did all of my brothers so that stove was worth it's weight in 2023's Gold Price. Not too long after that we upgraded the "knob-and-tube" wiring in the cabin and got a 4 burner electric stove w/ oven. I do not know what ever happened to the old Coleman 2 burner camp stove. Maybe I should look in the deepest darkest corners and crevices of the that "Shack" since I am the only one who ever uses it anymore. I hope it's hiding somewhere near the old pitcher pump that was used to proof the hand driven well that I've have seen kicking around either in the added one room upstairs accessible by a hand built ladder nailed against the chimney or in the one room porch added on to the front. Thanks Frank. It was fun and you brought back some long lost memories. ben/ michigan

He recently helped me get my 424 running and I enjoyed seeking out his knowledge and receiving it. If you've not bought a stove yet, brand new or older, then I recommend them. Great pieces of kit. Watched all 3 video's. I was apprehensive about purchasing a 3-burner stove because most are in terrible shape. The best stoves are expensive. The thought of refurbishing a greasy stove with very mild rust doesn't seem so difficult. To the younger people, please understand I'm 70 with arthritis and after 5 decades restoring engines, cars, motorcycles, boats and military vehicles. I have little dexterity left for small parts. I will find a rebuildable one now and do what I can refurbishing while following this video. Thank you very much Sir.

Great video once again, Frank! Now the REAL BURNING question I've had for decades that's never been answered to my satisfaction is how TF are those wind screen retainers supposed to hold that lid when it's gusting? I LOVE the other design that you pinch into the slots in the stove but these SUCK! What am I missing? Haha! I use clothes pins to keep them from coming off. I've had minimual success extending one all the way up and the other all the way down putting the lid in a semi bind, but again, not acceptably. The first gust and doink!
The only reason the stove had so much yellow is from the flow test you did prior. Lots of liquid still in the generator. I bet you didn't have hardly any yellow when you started it back up.
As a standard shutdown procedure on this an other straight generator stoves is to set the lighting lever up and run on high until the flame leans out and starts to jump off the burner. This may or may not do anything but satisfy my desire to burn as much liquid out of the fuel path as possible. So sue me, I sleep better doing it....... Haha!
Thanks for the RTFM. So many folks try to baby the fuel valve when lighting, which just makes things worse. This part may not be in the manual, but as soon as it lights, I start pumping to keep the pressure and velocity/atomization to a maximum.
The other BURNING QUESTION I have is what do you use to put your towels on with the aluminum model? Which, btw has the good wind screen retainers. Haha!
Great tutorial, Frank! Keep em burning, Sir.

One of the cleanest stoves I have purchased was lined with aluminum foil. The bonus was an old roll of A&P aluminum foil was left in the stove. I call it my John Updike stove. If you want to make burgers without building up grease in your newly cleaned stove I would recommend an aluminum foil lining. I am getting ready to jewel the wind flaps on my 425B stove. When I have finished I will tag you on Facebook with a picture of the results.

Pump pressure is excellent but when I do your Vapour test as you have shown in the video, I only get air with no vapour at all. Could you point me in the right direction on how to fix? The inside of my case looked about the same as yours after de-greasing. I had some high temperature silver/ aluminum exhaust manifold paint that I used on the interior and baked it in in the kitchen oven. Vent-a-hood on high speed for the bake in, whew. A couple decades later and it is still resisting rust and the beating from the fuel tank/generator bouncing around in it on dirt roads.

Thanks for putting this series together. Very nicely done as usual.
I like that griddle! I should pick one of those up. I'm guessing
    It would fit a modern 2-burner 425?

Yes sir, it does. It is a Coleman griddle. I have the box for it, let me know if you'd like a part number.

The best camping combination is a Coleman stove and Lodge cast iron cook wear.

I just bought a 411A Canadian edition stove. It has a production date of 1966 under the tab of the tank, but no number can be found on the suitcase. I really don't need the exact owners manual, I would like to know what American version is close to my Canadian one. The Model number for the generator replacement is 412-262, I see that number on a lot of units while educating myself.

Please stop showing off the USFS lantern and the 220e Canadian red. Makes it difficult to watch your videos as I’m very envious.
