@@OldTownColeman I have no Idea but is so interesting to meet someone with such a similar last name. Your one of the main reasons I got into collecting and repairing old Coleman fuel stoves and lanterns.
Frank, I love your work! You have contributed so much to this hobby. Could you work on making your into and outro volumes a little lower? They are just so much louder than the main body of your video. Thanks again from one Marine to another, Oorah!
Hello Frank I enjoy watching you rebuild your stoves and lanterns. Thankyou for passing on your knoloege. I have had a few follow me home, but most need to be gone through. I am attempting my first 502. I did well I believe, but am having issues at the end. Re assembled, I get a bubbling noise of fuel in the bunson below the burner.. I replaced the generator. I realized tonight that the generator did not come with the cardboard packing. Is this possably my issue? So, do all coleman generators have a packing? Do lanterns use the same length as a 502 stove? Thanks for your support in a hobby that you helped me get into!
I got a 502 for $15. i went over it by watching your video, thank you. Mine was left for years with fuel in tank. I spun valve off and got small stones that fit that hole... shook and rinsed till clean with water. On first light... it hissed air for long time and would not light. I had followed the 1/4 turn instructions on red knob valve. After turning this valve 3 turns open... stove worked perfectly. I did not tear this valve and clean like you did. Is this normal, or should I tear into this valve more? seemed like all air and no liquid. I don't know how that air/liquid mix system works.
Your videos are by far the most informative about these old gassies. I wish I could find similar vids on my other projects. Top notch on info and details. Thank you sir.
Yes great videos and many thanks for all the information that you've provided on these amazing creations. I have what appears to be a fuel leak at the valve assembly on my newly acquired 502. When I pump to a high pressure, there is helped flame present on the valve block. I have tried tightening the fittings but there's still flame with high pressure. Any suggestions? Thank you!
It'll info for you buddy Rust-Oleum makes a substance called evapo rusto it's expensive but it takes rust off of parts. AKA basically it is citric acid. This is one of the two acids which will passivate material. Basically it will start a chemical reaction which will take the rust off and also go after the Steal. It will leave a brown coating that can be washed off on steel on carburetors it will turn it a dark gray. That coating that it leaves will help prevent it from ever-croating again which is great for carburetors. Perhaps you'd like to try it and see how it works for you. Also there's a substance from Amway called Chrome & glass cleaner. It will take the discoloration like from chrome headers and bring it right back to shiny. It's truly remarkable stuff if you wanted to take the time to try it. Keep up the good work
I found a 502 that someone threw away. I watched your videos and others to learn how to make it work because it wasn't when I got it. The inner bowl is hard to get off like you said.I don't have that kind of vise to help me so I don't bend it. I like fixing things and I enjoy backyard camping and bushcraft so I do have lots of ministoves.
Great video Frank,, it took me a little longer before I got to watch this video, because I had a disagreement with a few skunks that lasted a few days . They won the first battle with my dog .. BUT I won the war thank you Frank from montana. Good video Man !
I like the blue look. Have you noticed any difference in the longevity of bluing vs refinishing? And… patients is key sir. I’m still working on that key!
Love the series. I recently found a 502 with the aluminum case/pot and just today found a boxed heat drum from the same era. Sadly the paint is 90% gone on the 502 but it works perfectly. Your videos will be a great help for when I am ready to disassemble the tank for painting
do you worry that you might change the temper of the spring in the generator by doing the heat and quench method? I may be wrong, but I believe the "pink" coloring you are seeing after the vinegar is a thin layer of copper where the zinc or other alloy burnt off/out of the brass. Fresh copper looks pink like that.
Very educational video, thank you! I'm wanting to buy my first stove (a new 533) but the generator isn't a straight tube, would you consider this model easy to clean? I plan on only using unleaded in it and have heard they can get clogged easier/faster by doing this
I enjoy your videos. You might want to get a media blast cabinet and some mildly abrasive media for the cleaning steps. It works great and leaves the parts looking new.
Great videos. Evaporust or equivalent works great for rusty areas you don’t want to take a brush to. It’s a little expensive but is reusable and worth it.
Excellent, as always! Thanks for the advice of CARB cleaner - NOT BRAKE cleaner! Also the reference to bluing. What flew out of the Bunsen when you blew it out? (@31:58 or so)
John, yes sir, carb not brake. Brake cleaner (I have found) melts paint fast. I'm not sure what came out as I didn't see it when we were filming, only while editing. However, is a good lesson considering that the stove was pretty clean but the Bunsen still had critter nests in it.
I'm sorry, I did not quite understand about the pink gel. what is it and how is it called? I don't always understand English by ear. thank you in advance.
The pink jelly is called “Navel Jelly” it is a rust remover. I’m from Canada and wasn’t able to find it here in Canada so I’m not sure if it’s only sold in the USA. I live in a border town so I was able to go into Buffalo NY and get some. It cost me less than $10.00 for a small bottle that will last me for years of cleaning Coleman lanterns and burners.
Frank-have you ever attempted to remove a packing from a valve nut by "unscrewing" it with a screw extractor or other tool? Just wondering if that might work.
Frank. I have a font with some rust and debris inside that needs to be cleaned. I was thinking about a handful squirting some carb cleaner and and tossing a handful of 1/4-20 nuts inside and shaking it around for a while. Any better suggestions for cleaning the inside of the tank? Thanks in advance. Love watching these videos. So far my son and I have rescued an old 502 lantern and 528 stove that my son and I use for camping.
Louis the quarter-twenty nuts will break apart the heavy rust but I'm not sure the carb cleaner will do much for you. You can pour some CLR or vinegar in and both will act on rust. I am going to be doing some testing for a video on this subject--one product I have not tried yet, but will, is called Metal Rescue by the PB Blaster folks. I have been told it is the bomb... Best of luck and and I'm sure happy to see a father-son team working on Coleman!
@@OldTownColeman Thanks Frank. An update for you. The gunk was so thick in the tank that some of the nuts and screws actually got stuck! It took about 4 rounds of cleaning. The carb cleaner made a good first pass to loosen things up. Once I ran out of that I used uncut purple cleaner and a handful of pea gravel. About 2 tanks of gravel and purple cleaner (and a whole lot of shaking) finally did the trick. If you find something that works better I would love to know but hope I never have the problem again. Enjoy the videos. Thanks for everything.
I need some help ..i have a coleman no.530 and I've been trying to clean because it not. Burning like it use too..but I can seem to break the main valve that runs into the propane holding tank everyone shows to put it advice upside down and turn the tank I'm having a problem that it will not and I'm afraid to break the valve that's connected to the tank any suggestions

Hello. My question is a bit off topic but you seem to be the man to ask. Does mantel size in my lanterns really matter? I picked up a 295-700 and a 288. As you probably know...they are both double mantel. I have no documentation on them and have been using #21 mantels. Is this ok?
LIKE THE DINING ROOM LAMP LIGHTING ! TOO COOL
Great instructions. I just picked a 1968 502 that need rebuilding and paint.....good winter project.
Excellent content. This channel is definitely one of my favorites.

No I haven't, and based on how they disintegrate, the extractor would probably destroy it also... If you try it, let me know how it goes!
