Generally I agree with the idea that giant swords are more for slaying beasts. And intimidation. It's very much more for brutality than effectiveness

I will always say that the energy sword from halo is surprisingly functional for humans but drawbacks are always gonna make sense since they're designed for something that isn't human (iirc the species that makes up elites have symmetrical hands)

In a progression fantasy book series called Path of the Berserker the giant sword is called a "Glaive" and is described as using glaive, aka polearm, techniques to be wielded effectively. I think that is a fair assessment of the "role" of big fantasy swords they are used in much the same way as one would use a halberd or glaive.

I think comfort merits a 10/10 because it's a cane. Meaning, if you actually needed a cane to walk around, having this weapon is more comfortable than simply not having it.

Thinking about it, I wonder how much a bronze version would weigh. Bronze work-hardens with every impact, as fast as I'm aware. Over time, those nicks will eventually create a spot where the blade is likely to break. Eventually. But with a material that work hardens, the number of impacts it would take to get deep into the edge might just be high enough that the edge hardens up before it happens. I just don't know how bronze compares to steel, weight wise.

I'd put giant sword to C tier Because while it's a legit weapon, with all it's drawbacks I don't think it's as usable as the other ones. Even carrying it around looks extremely inconvenient.

I don't know if you could actually make it, but would you consider rating the chain sword monstrosity from The Brotherhood of the Wolf? It looked to have an automatic retract function and was much larger than Ivy's version.

Sad face. My energy sword skills are useless now. To be fair if we could make it out of encased plasma it would definitely be a dangerous thing to handle. One wrong move and there goes an arm or a leg.

i would put Riddick's knifes higherm because if you are trained in hand to hand combat and not with swords it's better to get something you are relatively used to than something u have never used, imagined a newby with a sword: movements, edge aligment problems etc; with knife: very basic stuff; but with something that you can even punch, and protects your hand, yes

Regarding the armor issue, I don't think it's a huge issue given the assassination context, since I'd expect most targets (and other assassins) to be wearing: 1. No armor, 2. Chainmail, which is light and knife-proof but the needles would easily get pass that, or 3. Bullet-proof body armor, which still leaves a lot of things (e.g. neck) open for a little stabby stabby. Also, given Yor's strength and the pin-point damage nature of the weapon, getting through (most) solid armor may not even be very difficult for her.

That throwing weapon, would it ever have been used in a similar manner to the Teda throwing knife which is used mainly for hunting but can also be used against the enemy [description of this in the novel Flyaway by Desmond Bagley] though it is mainly designed for bringing down animals

Those assassin's needles, there's a good reason knitting needles aren't allowed on flights any longer. I'd have put them between A and S simply because for their intended purpose they are perfect [I mentioned in the video featuring them I'd read a novel years ago where knitting needle was used as the weapon of choice, and the story was inspired by a REAL life crime from back in the 1930s some time. And the ones you made could easily pass for ordinary knitting needles meaning you can literally carry them in plain sight. Hair pins are another weapon I've seen mentioned as well from a law book written some time back around the 900s and your needles - if a bit shorter - could easily pass as hair pins for keeping long hair up. Definitely items used successfully in the real world and for over a 1000 years as well. Great video, must find the first one in this series.

Given that this is aluminum, you could technically put that profile edge on with a wood cutting blade in a track saw, or a fixtured circular saw. And for the same reason, you could add linear features with wood router bits. Something like a chamfer bit for the bevels. A bowl cutting bit would make a nice fuller, maybe help stiffen up the blade.

Not sure if this counts as "lore reason" but i wouldnt match up the giant swords like the dragonslayer against other long range melee weapons, like spears and polearms, but against big, beefy monsters with thick hides, like dragons, and for those enemies, the extra mass and cutting ratio compared to a spear might actually be very beneficial.

No in-lore reasoning.... .... .... except in regard to vampires.

Giant sword may have one important quality irl - intimidation. I would be a bit scared seeing someone waving a ~6kg of sharpened steel.

Series suggestion, A comparison between fictional weapons against what their based on/inspired by/closest to whatever previously mentioned.

I don't know if commenting on lore is necessarily a criticism of you. Since you don't cover the subject, fans might just want to share why things are a certain way in the story, in case people don't know. But since you bring it up, I do often find myself confused by what "real world design" is supposed to mean. Like if you shrink a weapon design to make it work, then it seems like that means the original design doesn't work & you're testing a different design. Or making things out of aluminum that I'm positive are canonically steel. Surely that's a huge effect.

The most effective way to use the whip-sword as an offensive weapon is to give it to your opponent. I think a D-tier ranking is overly generous.
