I've said this on a video on Skall's channel regarding this blade, but I'm gonna toss this out here as well. The design of the energy sword in the Halo lore comes from the fact that the two blades absolutely CANNOT touch one another. The way they are projected causes both blades to have opposing charges, meaning that if they come into contact then they instantly short out with an electrical explosion. Which is why they are a one-shot kill in the game and they have an energy limit. Every time you stab an opponent a circuit is completed between the two blades, causing said electrical explosion to go off inside the target and deplete the weapon's battery.
@@Naptosis It sounds more like he's referring to the handle shape not being made for human hands there because he's talking about it being hard to hold, not the blade shape.
@@powerfist1340 You can walk away from a stab wound as long as it doesn't hit something vital directly or go too deep. Too be fair the elites also had metal ones so anyone complaining about that the blade isn't made of energy or being lore accurate dont have a leg to stand on. But regardless both are ceremonial weapons from an extremely religious alien species not a weapon designed for war. So the fact that it performed as well as it does in human hands is impressive.
I once heard an interesting theory for the gap in the blade. With the concept being that the energy sword functions as an incomplete circuit so that when you stab something with it completes the circuit and sends a huge burst of energy through the target
Functionally one of the biggest factors is the handle design. Saying it's made for an alien is understanding the real issue. It's' designed and scaled for an alien that's larger and most importantly has two thumbs on each hand. If humans had a second thumb instead of a pinky it would significantly increase grip strength and support that handle design for both slashing and stabbing.
Something to note is that Elites have 2 hearts so the reason for their sword design could be because its meant to primary be a thrusting weapon designed to be used against their own species by penetrating both hearts at once. We dont see them do it much in games likely because once they got the energy upgrade thrusting didnt matter all that much anymore when it can practically cut through anything regardless of how you choose to attack.

I would like to add a small, ultimately inconsequential caveat to the lore dump of the energy sword, particularly the existence of steel bladed versions. Before the boost in technology that the Elites gained from joining the covenant, the energy sword was a physical weapon, not an energy based one. The steel versions existed as a proto-sword variant for centuries on Sanghelios before the adoption of the Type 1 energy variant, and Elite recruits still train with physical blades before being permitted to ever wield a true energy sword in combat.

It's sorta just a big fat normal sword from the looks of it. Unfortunately it doesn't have any info aside from Haka being massive enough to use it like a normal sized sword
I read somewhere that it was designed to catch regular swords in the gap between blades back on the elites home planet before they were made of plasma.
Halo was the reason I switched from PS to Xbox, and I have never regretted the decision. If you ever make a "real" weapon version, I suggest using a metal rod running up the inside portion of each blade. That will give the blades a lot more rigidity and should solve a lot of problems.
I feel like because people talk a lot of crap about stainless steel for swords the people think the metal itself is no good. But it is good metal for what it's for, it's just not for swords for the most part.
Its kind of like those “equal stats” discussions, obviously the fact that its way lighter when made of energy and the fact you don’t need to apply force to ensure a cut is kind of something that makes it more viable in universe.
If you want to find the "real" Energy Sword, look up a "Curveblade". _That_ should make you a bit happier. As for the split in the middle, it is literally intended for Elite Blademasters to catch and lock an opponent's Energy Sword mid-swing; needless to say, do not try this at home.
After looking back at the original graphical effects for the swords in Halo:CE, I can't shake the suspicion that they were initially intended to function as singular broad blades.

You might find it interesting to know that there actually is a metal version in the lore. From the Halo Legends anime shorts (like the Animatrix but for Halo), one short takes place in the ancient past of the Covenant and we see an Elite using a metal sword that is in roughly the same shape as the energy sword. Double pronged blades with that gap in the middle, but this one looks more comfortable to hold at least since it doesn't have that protrusion in the middle of the grip the energy sword has.

Why don't you sit down with Shad and do a human design of this weapon on that software that he uses to draw concepts? Would be cool to see what you can come up with. Maybe even make one as well and do some testing?
I'd mention the gauntlet sword for a real world comparison. Which immediately makes me think of some likely issues. Like edge alignment, comfort of using it, and the less sturdy wrist position - without the reinforcement of the gauntlet.
@@ScreenTested Alright thanks, I'll take your word for it. Would be cool if you or Shad could get a hold of something like a functional pata, and show off how they work.
I'd like to see you do an episode on Gamora's sword from Guardians of the Galaxy, as it has a similar split-blade design, albeit with some support structures mid-blade and has a handle meant for human hands.
At one point I was looking at the design and thinking "well what if you put a regular hilt on it, merged the blades together, and made it out of carbon steel? But then I realized you'd basically be designing a new sword.
That weapon needs to spring steel. it does have a look. Just get rid of the points by the wrist. maybe put a rubber or hilt wrap around the lowest part of the blade by the hand? I would not want to extend my arm out far while using it.
I would like to see some redesigns of that weapon for humans and being out of proper spring steel. The handle would need a drastic redesign and getting rid of the gap between the two blades to make it one blade would be ideal
How would a carbon steel version of this work? I also wonder if you could use this design for a carbon fiber sword, and put steel edges on the blades, possibly both inside and outside edges of each. Those points are probably too narrow though? Nah, that would be a pain. It's just that the overall width of the weapon reminded me of the huge carbon fiber sword you were working on.
Isn't it essentially structured like a katar but with longer blade(s)? So with exception of the most likely uncomfortable handle and questionable structural integrity of the design if it's made with non-scifi material, it should function similarly to a larger punch dagger/katar.
Just while I remember, which character is the boxed red and black DC figure behind your right shoulder on the shelf that looks like an Iron Man suit but can't be? Please let me know as it's been driving me nuts wanting to know since you started this channel! LOL, thank you!
Just a thought, what about draw cuts? I know they aren't great, but it should be better on your arm and it's easy to transition into from a failed thrust to at least get in a little damage

Would cutting the middle nub on the handle off fix the comfort? And maybe the wrist jab because your hand would be further? I mean, if it was tailored for human hands, why would there be a nub there
Fun review. I had always wondered how effective it would Actually be to someone who uses swords lol. I think you should still make one tho with your suggestions at the end and see if your idea still holds up. Would cutting the middle nub on the handle off fix the comfort? And maybe the wrist jab because your hand would be further?
I mean, if it was tailored for human hands, why would there be a nub there
You should really need to try forging and use the Vitrica from Warframe.
You should do the Final Fantasy 8 gunblades. How effective they are as swords.
Fun review. I had always wondered how effective it would Actually be to someone who uses swords lol. I think you should still make one tho with your suggestions at the end and see if your idea still holds up. Would it make that much of a difference if any, where you would be more likely to pick it up to use against an Elite? lol😄😄🤓😁
"My Neck is pretected from my Gambeson" Really? Your gambeson is not even closed and when you swing it is anything but closed. So no, you have "Forged in Fire" protection. Stay safe
