I did not receive any sponsorship or endorsement from PointCTRL for this video. This is my honest, unbiased review. I posted a comment on a Kiowa driver's page, too. Can't tell you how thankful we were to have support from above while in Baghdad (2003 and 2005). On Route Tampa in 2003, we used to hook 'six shooter' elements for fire support, normally we'd find you guys monitoring the sheriffs net. Thanks. We did help recover one of your crews that went down on Tampa, and once they got the KBR chowhall built at BIAP, we would ad hoc pow wow with you guys. Saved our asses more than once.

      Keep practicing! You’ll get it. Just remember to reduce power and apply at cyclic. Then as the helicopter slows down, as soon as you notice any sort of descent rate beginning, add power aggressively to arrest the descent. Eventually it will become second nature. Good luck!

    One thing people fail to realize is how heavy these headsets that we put on our faces actually are! I think the real weight of the Crystal Light (as weighed by VooDooDE who actually weighs the units with his own scale) is about 925 grams. Now that sounds heavy... unless you are using a Meta Quest 3 with a head strap that holds a battery pack (Bobo VR being the most popular and the one I own) which I weighed and it came in at basically the same weight (I couldn't get it to sit completely on my tiny scale so I had to balance it lightly or let go and try to get a reading before it fell over!). I have also heard that the balance on the Crystal Light actually makes it MORE comfortable than the Quest 3 - I'll see in a month or so when I receive mine! PS - I couldn't find how much the G2 ACTUALLY weighs since I am sure that 550 is an underestimate - I would be curious if someone could actually weigh one though!

    • @schoolio64D
      @schoolio64D 6 місяців тому

      They definitely have weight, and it does take getting used to. However, for comparison, an HGU-56 helmet with NVGs and counterweights is generally around 2 kg. The old Apache IHADSS helmet weighed up to 2.5 kg depending on size.

    Hey man, i have a beginner level question When flying irl how do you operate the instruments? Ive thought about this in DCS, I dont have trim settings and hover and things like it down yet so taking my had off the stick at any point will just send the bird spiraling. The only natural thing feels like doing everything with the left hand but since id have to use my non-dominant hand for the mouse it becomes pretty awkward. Id imagine that in a stable hover you can do it but is it more of an "never take your hand of the controls" kinda thing? cheers

    • @schoolio64D
      @schoolio64D 7 місяців тому

      IRL you use your left hand. You put enough friction on the collective so that it doesn’t move and you reach up with your left hand. The whole mouse thing is why I really love PointCTRL. I can just use my left hand and leave my right hand on the cyclic, and I don’t have to try to use the mouse with my left or take my hand off of the cyclic.

    Just watched your video “why you keep crashing your Apache!” It gave me a real perspective on how challenging their flying conditions were in Afghanistan. We had two that supported us on the majority of our jobs, they just slowly hovered around our battle ground. They were so switched on that we didn’t even need to communicate with them, whatever we fired upon with our small arms or javelins, they immediately honed in on the area and just obliterated the target with their ordnance. Such legends, but I didn’t even know or appreciate it at the time.

    If I got a grid of a Shilka (or anything not moving lets say) in a middle of nowhere with no JTAC or any support. Can I hide behind something using that Grid to make waypoint T01 and set ACQ to T01 using Hellfire L. Can I shot it without targeting it using the TADS or even seeing it? I think I get close to doing it but there is a step I'm missing somewhere. Is it a "LINK" function that is missing still on early release?

    • @schoolio64D

      I’m going to say no, simply because that target info isn’t getting passed to the missile. There are the ways to pass target info to the missile - laser target handover, ownship FCR, or FCR data from another FCR aircraft.

    Hey Schoolio, Great informative video and demo. The 6 Aux buttons can be mapped just like any other controller in the DCS controls page. You will see a column for PointCTRL. Most guys use them for things like NVGs, Salute, visor, escape, label, etc. Reference using F10 menu when the right FCU is active (not timed out) and you are using the the mouse. You can just look up slightly so the FCU is not in the FOV of the sensor, or cover the sensor with your other hand for a few seconds until the FCU times out. I use the FCUs to point and select items on the F10 menu. Just look straight ahead when interacting with it. If you look up and to right at it, you will end like a cat chasing it's tail and will have to raise your FCU way up and to the right to select items. I also set my message font size to 1.5. You can also use the FCU closer to your headset when interacting with the F10 menu so you don't have to raise it so high. Again, great video, and thanks for explaining things much better then I can. Hey @school64D, really enjoyed your vid (as I do all of your content). Just thought I'd point out that the top buttons (the ones that sit on the headset) are actually auxiliary buttons as opposed to the controllers. Those are the little suckers known as FCU's (Finger Control Units) that you put on each index finger. The FCU's give you the mouse functions, whereas the aux buttons on the headset aren't required as such but if you order them, they give you 6 extra mappable buttons you can assign to things like 'salute', 'NVG's on/off/adjust and, well anything you like really, as they are just seen as other mappable devices.
