The Portuguese planted their cross in their conquistadors to africa, middle east and india - before the conquistadors of spain to the americas. Either way both cruel and massively important in changing history
French, as magnanimous warriors Let us strike or hold back our blows! Let's spare these sad victims, With regret, arming himself against us! Do you know another national anthem which ask to spare the life of invaders? Those who say the french anthem is violent never read all the lyrics.
After the disaster at Poltava (1709) in front of Peter I, Tsar of Russia, Charles XII, the emblematic king of the Swedes, was unable to return to Sweden and received asylum in the Ottoman Empire (today's Turkey) and was given a residence in the fortress of Bender in Moldavia occupied by the Turks. After a few years, the international political situation changed and the Turks sent Charles XII home. He refused, leading to fighting between the Livgarde and Turkish soldiers. The clip shown shows an attack by the Janissaries on the residence of the Swedish king.
I visited Northern France some years ago and one place stood out for me, it was the Thiepval War Memorial on which there are 78,000 names of those that fell on the Somme. You first see the memorial with its white stone facades which initially look smooth, but as you get closer, you see the names carved into the stone. This for me was quite a powerful moment when you realise that so many fell in service of this country and to defend France. Blackadders last episode for me was equally as powerfull as the image fades to the poppy fields, it brings home the catastrophic truth about how many died over the course of WW1 on both sides. Lest We Forget!
the noise generated by 18,000 pairs of such wings rushing downhill can be compared to the launch of Saturn V 🔥😈... maybe even greater
With Captain Darling sharing the same situation Blackadder drops the hostility. Blackadder shows us who he really is at the last moment when he says: "...who would have noticed another madman around 'ere?" He drops the 'H' from "here" indicating he's working class like Baldrick. It also explains why Captain Darling often took the brunt of his sarcasm; Darling is a middle class gentleman trained as an officer. Blackadder worked his way up the ranks to Captain and has been faking his upper class persona all along.
Dude, you are massively overanalyzing this... Which to this English person is also extremely funny. It's actually pretty lowbrow comedy, about as far from Monty Python or the alternative scene of the 1980s as is possible and more a parody of the war films and TV series we had from the 1950s to 1970s. Basically everyone is an idiot apart from René. Just wait until the Italian arrives... I can't go into a French supermarket without saying to myself "It is I, LeClerc"
I'll take eyebrows-hit-ceiling for 0:28, Alex.
I adore Allo Allo. My French Teacher in secondary school would put episodes on whenever we were ahead & we were always beside ourselves whenever Crabtree came on, my favourite character was Lieutenant Gruber. I think it's brilliant to convey the different languages through accents, best seen in Michelle of the Resistance who switches from a French accent to stereotypical plum British accent when talking to the British Airmen
🇬🇧 vs 🇫🇷? ;) xxx
I miss you :( ❤
❤️
Frenchy, you're very understanding. I never really got into allo allo, but in retrospect, it's not a bad thing to make fun of war. I once attended a meeting with a French Swiss Engineer who spoke like the French policeman. I looked around the attendees to see if he was taking the piss. Apparently, no-one else saw the humour. I had to leave the room, because I was about to explode.
One of the factors resulting in the decommissioning of the Ontos was that the recoilless rifles that were used had also been removed from use in the U.S. arsenal, meaning that maintaining the weapon system in the future would require re-engineering it to use either use another type of recoilless rifle, or retired recoilless rifles would have to be acquired to function as a spare parts stockpile. As an additional factor, the conduct and practices of the Vietnam War left a lasting mark on American military doctrine, resulting in at least a 15 year period before the next major ground forces engagement, which was the 1991 Gulf War, comprised of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The Vietnam War was fought against an enemy that had not directly attacked American forces, major proportions of their combat forces were not in uniform, and the objectives were either static, or subject to the constantly varying whims of politicians. There had been no actual clearly identifiable and achievable victory condition in Vietnam. It was not until after the 9/11 attacks that the U.S. military was forced to once again engage in large-scale deployment against an enemy that was not clearly identifiable, since the terrorists did not wear either uniforms or a consistent identifying device, and engaged by preference by means of ambush, traps, snipers, and other aspects of asymmetric warfare against the more numerous, better equipped American and allied forces.
Nice reaction sir.
"Shortened our king". 😅😂 Dark humour is great.
Extra Credits has a really good series on the Haitian Revolution. You might find it interesting. Salut de Canada.
Massachusetts loves good fight
At least us French are in touch with our femininity 😂. Bollocks too that😂just explained the biggest difference in British and French in that sentence 😂

The Polish hussars were one of the best cavalry in the history of the world. In 1683, the Polish hussars saved Europe from the threat of the Ottoman Empire by going to the aid and saving besieged Vienna. Austria thanked us for this 100 years later. Austria expressed its gratitude in such a way that together with Prussia and Russia they dismantled the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and for 123 years Poland ceased to exist. Today, Europe is once again threatened by the invasion of Muslim immigrants and there are no longer any hussars to defend it.
Hey, haven't seen an upload from you for a bit. Hope all is well.
Love the context you add to the descontextualised display of what epic history is doing. Generally speaking, on each episode.
USS Enterprise was also in the movie Top Gun (1986) if I’m not mistaken.
Part of it also had a lot to do with watching the Iroquois Confederacy have a form of governance deemed preferable to British rule. They weren't trying to shift blame in any way.
3:35 Russian wood is cap for ships on this time period. Don't buy wood for that purpouse
Have you bought his book
Millet joining the Canadian army in order to fight in ww2 isn’t unusual as I believe tens of thousands of americans went to Canada because they wanted to fight.
One of the better reactions I’ve seen! Some knowledgeable reactors try and compete with the video for some reason, but instead you improved it with so many interesting related additions. Bravo!
Finally! someone noticed the wrong king number!! <3
Yessir !
Frency McFrenchface gets it and i love it. Thank you for understanding the insane loss of life, thrown into battle for, basically, nothing. Respect from Un Grand Danois (probably wrong, but i chose German as a third language :-P) Edited because i just remembered: Never forget just how many french died in WW1. They fought so damned hard, with such heavy losses, that most countries cannot even imagine the loss of life and the shear brass balls it required to even hold ground in the face of that volume of artillery. Again. Sooooo much respect my French brothers. o7.
If you watch the scene before this, Melchett sends Darling to the front line against Darling's will.
Interesting that you caught the blink of an eye which labeled Louis XVI incorrectly. I had watched the video a zillion times and simply recognized Louis and Marie by sight. If you had not stopped at that instant, I would NEVER have noticed. Thanks. :)
A Very interesting video, sir. I learned something totally new. I was wondering if you could you do one on my favorite French Military Song Chanson de l'Oignon. I first learned it in my High School French Class over a quarter century ago and can still sing some of the verses. I can also sing La Marseillaise by memory even today(we had to memorize that song as one of our tests).
I wrote with Sabaton because I loved the song and Video but was horrified for the Instruments and Equipment. They answered 'Yeah, they were a bit soggy afterwards'.😂
Its crazy how the last major german offensive in ww1 with so much preparation still failed even with hundreds of thousands of reinforcements after winning the eastern front against russia. Shows how the trench warfare aspect of the war really did play a part in the front lines not changing much overall. Friggin meat grinder.
Yes, the "rolling barrage" did work but it didn't start until late in the war. It was part of what allowed the Allies to win, ultimately. But at the time that they are attacking here, the rolling barrage clearly isn't invented yet, because the British guns have stopped before the troops are nearing the enemy.
This is a killer track!
If you don't FA you won't FO.

The funny thing about the German rocket program is that post war, the German scientists admitted that almost all of their work was based of an American rocket scientist named Robert Goddard. They literally copied American patents and used that as a starting point in the late 30s
These brave women were the 1st pilots to use stealth style tactics! #GirlPower
"Good morning my neighbors!!" " Yes! yes! fck you too!!" lmfao isnt that from that movie "coming to america" or something
How right you are Frenchie about him loosing his physical integrity cos a ywear later or so, he lost his right arm in a failed attack at Spain too
But that didn't deter him. 😂
sure history is better than fiction but it has an unfair advantage, fiction needs to be beleivable.
