Yet another lunchtime treat for me! This was really interesting, I so much appreciate the way you kept us looking at this through the lens of the time, that's very important. I'm waiting for new episodes this fall, many shows are going to cover the knights templar, I got hooked last year😊, Americans are currently soaking it up, and I love it! Thank you again for keeping us in our lane and focused on the time. Always appreciate the work you put into the video and thoughtful commentary
I enjoyed your taking this guy apart. Simon Whistler is a master of click bait. His videos are usually filled with information from Wikipedia delivered with a heavy dose of presentism and self-satisfaction.
I think he meant "rich" relatively speaking. Trained horses, armor, swords, etcetera, cost quite a bit. So one had to have a bit of money to be able to be equipped and trained before becoming pledged to a noble who would take care of them then.
I'm an anthropologist. I appreciate very much, both professionally & personally, the work of historians, esp. those reaching out to non-historians. It has been a joy to find your reaction channel. Miigwetch (thank you in Odawa, the language of my in-laws).
04:20 Why did Saladdin have all the Knights Templar killed after the Battle of Hattin? Simple: he considered them too good warriors to let them go, even for ransom. Saladdin bought the captured Templars from his own soldiers and beheaded them all. At Agincourt the situation was similar and the English took too many prisoners to release them. A month later they would fight again. It was a military decision, not an economic one. 19:20 The knight oak from the film Kingdom of heaven. Watch it :)
Yes! I was exactly thinking about this moment with the slap, it's an amazing movie! Also for killing prisoners another reason is very pragmatic: these are mouths to feed, and you need to dedicate resources in order to watch them. Thank you for your comment!
The sad thing is, MANY of the old warrior groups we hold in high standards weren’t anywhere near as . . . chivalrous as we think. Unfortunately, human nature is a dangerous enemy
So they were Frat Boys from College...... Whistlers writers and researchers always get shit wrong, he doesn't care, he just reads it and never corrects it. I've heard from a couple of people who "know" him and say he's a nice guy, but if they get things wrong, big deal...most of it is true. I don't like that attitude. Nice guy or not.
I've also heard that he's a nice guy, but every time I've listened to him talk about the history of my country it hasn't always been pleasant. He tries to do a bit too much to sound sarcastic for my taste
All of the various channels that Simon and Daven (sp?) run are what I'd refer to as popcorn history. It's not as shoddy as channels like Watch Mojo, but is of the same ilk and certainly fall far short of accurate and thorough. Sadly, the vast majority of history available here (YT) is of the popcorn variety. Sensationalism and title bait. Thankfully, Frenchy is more knowledgeable and level-headed than most and I always enjoy his videos.
He should of talked about the knights in monty python, the black night,is my favourite,''tis but a scratch had me rolling with laughter. Thanks my friend, have you thought of covering, red indians,Waite Native Americans, there culture is based on fighting,i.e. You had to fight your rivals to become a man,an they have this thing about going into battle an touching an enemy with a stick an escaping,I think it called counting coo, sounds French.
Thanks for your own views on the subject…..but, lazy Frenchman….surely not. I lived in Gascony for 10yrs, lots of farmers, never saw anyone doing much at all, but everything seemed to “work” perfectly well.
No fact can be more horrifying than than this host trying to vocalize in English. I don't dare call this speech cause that way I see it, even in a swine's sounds are words easier to distinguish than in this gurgling. This was so appalling for the whole 7 seconds that I was listening, wow!
I hope you enjoyed 😀

Knights Templar have a fascinating story! Maybe a nice topic for a forthcoming video on my channel :) Thank you very much!

Thank you, yes I was a bit "surprised" by his tone

Yes, it is an oversimplification thanks
My guess, we may see a reemergence of knight-like groups when we develop power armor or super soldiers

Yes, exactly. Human nature is complicated
There are at least 37 knights in my family. So they are my ancestors.
Incredible, do you know if they were involved in famous battles?
Would react to a oversimplified video on Prohibition
Great idea!

I think your commentary was probably a bit more accurate than Mr Whistler`s.
Thank you 😀
I have an idea why don’t you do a video on William The Bastard
Excellent idea!

ahaha exactly! I've always dreamed of making a video about Geronimo, indeed!
Crazy horse an sitting bull,as well, there amazing.

Haha thank you, farmers are beasts
It's funny to see Whistler without facial hair and not living in a Communist country.
Where did he use to live?
Seems like the TopTenz guy is very anti-knight and biased against them. Great video explaining things further
I don't know, I think he is sarcastic / provocative on purpose to entertain its audience. Thank you!
Simon tends to be pretty clickbaity with his videos being a top tens styled channel.
Well I also think I do clickbait if I'm honest, it's just the YT game, but I was indeed expecting a bit more...
I can't respect an historian using modern ways of thinking to explain the motives of a medieval society. What is the point of this narrative?

Sorry, what was that?

Perhaps, because it's not his first language ?
