My TOP New Cards from Karlov Manor for Meta, Budget & Fun New Decks | MTG Arena Set Guide
I've played arena is Hearthstone a lot when it was still a new game and crushed it, was able to build a very big collection of cards by being pretty much f2p. However, as more and more extensions emerged that played the draft for you (ranking cards etc) I stopped playing it as I felt I was playing against these programs not players. Although I could still be infinite since I had the experience to still draft good decks, I felt kinda cheated. Now as a pretty new MTG player (played for a month a year ago getting to diamond with my own deck, but that's it) I'm really curious but afraid to start playing drafts because I feel like I'll get crushed by people who draft very good decks consistently using 3rd party software. Are my fears unfounded? Should I be preparing extensively by reading up on drafts/meta before trying? I'm not going to pay money to enter these so I'll have to scavange 10k gold first, which will take a week or so, so I don't want to throw away that gold. Thanks.
Mono white weenie with raise the past is garbage on arena. After working hard to get set up the game draws because game so slow on game triggers.
Good tips, but try to be more concise. Not necessary to repeat points several times
Interesting video. I do find it a little weird as a newcomer to MTG as while the decks might be starters you often don’t end up being matched against starters so it’s pretty unforgiving. It doesn’t leave me with much desire to play on arena tbh. Just my 2 cents of the last few weeks

@@LxLore-j5b thanks for sharing some unrelated corporate layoff news on a video about MTG Arena store offers...
@@gameschooldadMTG These cuts are going to continue here into 2025 and beyond, Magic is the only thing that makes Hasbro any Money. Now that we have had 6 years of this Arena staged trash the company is ripe for buy out. ELON
@@gameschooldadMTG See what happens here is WOTC can't have you playing like 1 or 2 decks, they have to have you sinking big Money into building 5-6-7-10 decks to try to run from the Dota 2 MMR specifically designed with hyper aggressive coding to keep those forced loses 45-55% win rate. This becomes painful reality less than 15 hours into ur magic career. Hasbro will continue to layoff, they will continue to suffer. Which I have to say is yummy good for me and Elon... Get mad love you miss you Hasbro XOXOXOXO
Here we are going into 2025 with a severely broken product as usual. I don't know how many people still play Arena, but I know how many of them know it's hyper rigged. All of them... Hasbro lays more off for Christmas good, the way it should be... 🤭
@@LxLore-j5b many people play arena because they don't have such trust issues.
Another thing. The game higly benefits aggro decks, whenever i face one, 80% of the times they play first. And do not get me started on combo decks. If they need 4 cards for a turn 1 combo, like phoenix or sorin/vein ripper in timeless, you opponent might even get to mulligan to 3, rest assured they'll find the 4 piece of the combo on their 1st draw.
One thing i do to avoid the rigged match making is to cancel the match search if it goes beyond 8 seconds. Whenever it takes a long time for the game to find someone for you, you always get fucked no matter how well you play.
If the matchmaking takes longer than a certain amount of time it means the game is not finding an opponent within the usual matchmaking range or rank. It will increase the parameters until it finds an opponent for you. This can mean that the difference in MMR between opponents could be larger. This could be either in your favour or in your opponent's favour.
I know this is an old topic but the way you're saying things in the video are outside of the actual complaint we're not saying they're choosing who wins or loses we're saying they keep the win loss ratio at 50% to push people to spend money to get better cards to try to outperform that 50% ratio. If you play enough it's easy to see the patterns and I play every single day when I win I destroy when I lose I get destroyed there's very little gray area because that's how they want it to be. Matching based on rank absolutely makes perfect sense, matching based on the exact cards I have in my hand is outright cheating and no one can convince me otherwise 🤷🏼♂️ If the algorithm knows what cards both decks have in their entirety then the algorithm can easily predict the outcome So the way I see it is they don't choose who wins or loses they just make sure you don't win enough
The matchmaking in this game is 100% broken nobody will ever convince me otherwise I play every single day and have been playing non-stop for the past 2 years I consider myself a power player the patterns are clear and easy to see to test my theory I decided to try to build a deck using a mechanic I had not seen in well over a year and that was a zero creature deck meaning no creature hit the field at any time during the match so I decided to build a deck with no creatures in it, what do you know second match in not a single creature hits the field on either side out of the 50 games that I tracked I faced 7 enemies with no monsters in their decks GTFOH HADN'T SEEN IT ONE TIME IN ABOUT A YEAR AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER the minute I start doing it 7 times in the next 50 games 🤷🏼♂️
Why would facing creatureless decks mean the game is rigged in any way at all?
@gameschooldadMTG first of all I didn't say rigged I said broken but that's neither here nor there because this has already been confirmed by the company itself if you match me based on the cards that are in my deck that is cheating plain and simple they call it deck weight I call it game fixing (by the way I don't mean fixed to help one person win and one person lose that's ridiculous, I mean fixed to keep people at 50% win ratios to incentivize spending money to get better cards to try to beat that 50% win ratio) deck weight matching to make the game more enjoyable to newcomers in play mode would be one thing but in a ranked match is absolute fucking insanity. My point with the creatureless deck since I do know that people actually run the strategy is that I being a power player hadn't seen it in a very long time where no one had really played a creature so the second that I built a creatureless deck to test the theory seven of the next 50 opponents that I played ran creatureless decks. I also use arena tutor which gives me loads of information stats and tracking When I win I destroy when I lose I get destroyed there's no gray area or I should say minimal gray area. last season the very decks that took me to mythic can't even get me out of platinum tier 4 🤦🏼♂️ it's a rocking chair it's absurd win one lose one win one lose one rinse and repeat unrealistic and doesn't happen in paper
Thank you so much. I looked every where after a video that shows how you beat this dragon. thank you so much
You're welcome
Just downloaded the game and I want to understand it so bad lol

@ I finished the color challenge but it still says “resume” as if there’s more to do. The two color deck challenge is difficult. I keep getting wrecked. Should I try all decks or are there specific ones?
Hey GSD, I just bought a few packs, as they were on sale for 10% cheaper, so i bought all the current standard ones, for 900 gold. And they all contributed to my golden pack progress, very happy with that change! I did that before seeing this video, so I thought I'd update you! "SOMETIMES " it happens over and over again. Contradicting yourself in the same sentence
@@KYxDiSASTER606 that literally isn't a contradiction. Sometimes a thing can happen repeatedly, and sometimes it doesn't 🤦♂️
urborg scav doesnt get the ward ability
It seems clear to me WotC wants to give better draws to players that spend a lot of money to keep them spending, at least at rotation or they want to give bad draws to free people so they think they have to spend money or even more money if already paying. Also... I believe the poll at the end seems misleading where the only 2 choices are: 1-The shuffler is to blame for not only losses but both wins & losses, suggesting the players don't earn wins or... 2-Only the player is responsible for wins. If we cannot see the opponents hand most of the time, we cannot tell how often the rigging is happening to both players.
@@mrcatchingup that's one theory, but it's one that has literally no evidence to back it up and is completely blown out by the fact that free to play players can do perfectly fine, and some paying players can often complain about the shuffler the most.
About 50 to 70 euros for a digital card deck? What the hell is this nonsense? I bought a pretty good bloowburrow commander deck with foil Mabel IRL for 45 euros from card kingdom. Like I've got several real life pioneer decks, cheapest one being around 40 euros, and most expensive one being around 70 euros, all of which have multiple legendary cards in there. Meanwhile Magic arena asks comparable prices for digital decks full of..commons and a few rares? I went out of my way to buy 17 full art bloomburrow mountain and 17 full art bloomburrow plains for that commander deck I mentioned earlier because I ended up liking it so much, and even with 32 full art land cards, that deck still costs less than 65 euros, which is still comparable to a digital Standard Toxic deck where none of the digital cards even have special art. If you were to buy that Standard Dinosaurs deck from Card Kingdom, it would cost like 20 euros, but here, in digital format, it's 50.
I'm a Hearthstone player that wants to dabble in Magic so I understand some basic strategy, but I'm not even that good at Hearthstone. This just seems quite a bit overwhelming. It seems to me like understanding how a certain color plays? Like you said, Red is pretty aggressive while Blue plays a lot of spells. I want to get into this but ugh not sure if I'm just wasting my time. I know players are freakishly good at this game and I feel like it might take me years to really get it.
I just wanted to let people on here know that if you play blue, you deserve to be on a registry of some kind and there needs to be an app to find out exactly where these people live for obvious reasons. That includes board wipers as well. Oh. And the game is rigged. Big time.
@@jaypage4737 rigged how? And evidence?
I've never got more than one win. Seems like I get consistently fucked on draws/matchups every single time I enter an event. Playing against p2p ungodly decks that are way out of my level for just starting
Just fyi I'm platinum 1 and like 2 weeks in. The shuffle and match up rigged coding is a real thing
If you're entering constructed events with a bad deck, you're not going to get more than 1 win. Not because the game is rigged, but because you're using a bad deck. Why would you enter events with a bad deck?
Can we get this video but updated every video I watch talks about easy daily’s I have one easy daily that changes and the other 2 are 15 wins per day and 15 wins per weeks the rewards seem nerfed from those videos too
You get one new daily quest each day, but you have up to 3 slots for them if you happen to not complete them each day. The daily wins and weekly wins are extra reward structures. The rewards also haven't changed at all since this video was made, so I'd be interested if you could tell me in detail what you think has been nerfed?
@@gameschooldadMTG I think I got confused because I play everyday and I’ve never seen the daily’s build up thank you for responding
This month I went from bronze 4 to mythic 95% in 7 days in constructed. I have won at least the 15 wins per day win at a roughly 90% win rate win a cheap mono-red aggro explorer deck. I'm a fully free-to-play player that just came back to arena after a two year break. So it's not actually impossible...
It's already proven that it's rigged and the reason why this makes playing online not fun. It's because it's only going to work for you if you play with the deck. The algorithm approves of
@@markdd4281 I love when people say it's been proven and forget to include the proof...
I believe it true the Shuffler is Rigged how ever I Honestly dont think its done intentionally ,I think the dam Randomization simply Glitch at the worst times Depending on the un natural number of cards in a deck , like decks have to be 50 cards some one builds a deck with 67 card and for what ever odd reason or another in that mess they put 29 Lands or something strange combination of this nature . also the randomnes can not and dose not account for multi color decks the more colors the worse the shuffle .
@@RoamingRamble the word rigging specifically implies intent, so you can't rig something unintentionally. I wonder why you think decks with different card counts would somehow confuse a random shuffling algorithm. An algorithm like that doesn't actually know what the card is and it doesn't matter at all for the randomness. Also what do you mean that the randomness doesn't account for multi coloured decks?
@@gameschooldadMTG The claim that the shuffle program is rigged hinges on how it manages deck versions, which can feel inconsistent and difficult to decipher. The real issue seems to be the delay in addressing problems when they're identified, leading to speculation about intentional design flaws. However, I see little incentive for Wizards of the Coast to rig a free-to-play game. If you play consistently, you can eventually earn most of the cards available for purchase through gameplay rewards like Gold. While it might feel frustrating if your current deck struggles to win, the system is designed to reward perseverance and strategy. Of course, not every player will stick it out-some will concede matches out of frustration. But the broader system encourages growth, as even losses can teach valuable lessons. Ultimately, the game's mechanics are geared towards engagement and progression rather than unfair manipulation. . .
Hey I just tried recording a playthrough after about a year, and no matter what I do, my playthrough won't record the sound. Did MTG copyright the sound? Are you also having this issue and if so, how do you get around it? Thank you ❤
It probably depends on your recording software. I use OBS Studio and as long as I've chosen to record my desktop sound and I have the sound turned up on MTG, it works. Copyrighting sounds doesn't have anything to do with your recording software being able to record it.
That's weird that they use the word "unpredictable". Cause I'm pretty sure that I can almost always predict that I'm getting mana screwed if I've won 2 games in a row in ranked.
I'd love to see video evidence of that, considering it's not unusual to get much more than 2 wins in a row in ranked. I'd bet it's either a deckbuilding issue or confirmation bias. I'm also open to being proved wrong with video evidence.
I think one of the reasons the shuffler is perceived as rigged is bc of the man's system in magic. Passive mana just isn't inconsistent. Also I think people forget what consistent deck building looks like. I am playing digital card games for a long time now and I will always have more tutors, diggers or substitutes for my convos. So m actual deck size is closer to 50 than 60. I also build in a way to exploit the shuffler even for my midrange decks. 3 free mulligans even tho you can only look for the ratio is huge. Building in a way that leaves you with almost no dead hands practicallyy no matter what you draw in your opener is key. Also the vlosest reason rdw is so prevalent. Those decks have very flexible and simple 1-2-pinch combos that rely on a few pieces. So they are inherently more consistent.
I agree, but I wouldn't use the phrase 'exploiting the shuffler', I'd probably say something else like 'build a good deck'. I don't know where you're getting 3 free mulligans though, please tell!
@@gameschooldadMTG I was talking about the hand smoothing. Iirc (tho i might be misremembering) it mulligans 3 times and takes looking for a land allocation in your hand that is closer to your deck average (so 3-4 cards with 24 lands in a 60 card deck or 2 in a deck with 17 cards).
One of the things I think is funny that people are just bad at RNG. The shuffler isn't rigged but irl shuffling isnt really random or rather less random. This is why a lot of devs have made algorithms in other games to rig the game in the gamers favor. But nobody will care people just wanna believe that wotc rigged the stack
Many people intentionally stack their decks in physical games, and they call the shuffler 'not random enough' because they can't do the same in a digital game, which leads to natural random variance.
Thank you!!!!!
You're welcome!
For some reason I really enjoyed this mode so I've played it a lot, and UG have provided the best results, no cap
Hey dude, is this still relevant info for a new player?
@@lukebarker547 the general outline is still the same. There are some new steps in the new player experience that I cover in a more up to date video, but they can still change anything at any time, so even that won't be exactly the same. If you come up against anything that isn't clear in the game, let me know and I can make an updated video explaining it 👍

These decks were constructed for Bo3. Their Bo1 stats are not representative.
@@PaulRGauthier yes I do mention that.
Just came here to rant. I played my Izzet League counter deck in Historical, and out of 60 cards, I have like 23 lands... I just played a game after a great win, where I drew NINE. LANDS. IN. A. ROW.... NINE. The odds of that are so astronautically out there that I just sat there stunned. I think I'm putting the game down.
@@atomickrispies yeah the odds are extremely low, I don't think I've ever seen that happen and you probably (hopefully) won't again for a long time.
Awesome video and I love the points made. Wanted to know more about the gems after playing MTG Arena for about two months now. I've only been playing gold for events and I love drafting. Extremely helpful and thank you for sharing. Keep on tapping out!! 🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂
@@noblockstapoutplease glad it was helpful
Can we expect for Foundations-based decks in near future? 😊
Should be coming next week! :)
Paying 200 gems for packs is a better option if you're farming for the collection, but I don't want to get 40 "useless" rares. I only need specific top-tier cards. I already have 90-95% of the cards from the decks, so buying packs is still an easy choice for me. It's easier to farm gems than wildcards, and the ability to buy rare cards I need is great. I can always use my wildcards for future cards.
watching this while getting served half an hour of garbage matches
Everytime i saw those decks on shop I wonder If it is worth to buy or craft the deck at all. As a beginner I waited and hoped you ll make a video of this. And I am glad you did.
I'd like to add my 2 cents here. A lot of your videos focus strictly on how much value you get for the gems (i.e. how many rares and/or mythics you can get for the same amount of gems). While this is great for players who want to homebrew + maximize their resources + focus on building a collection, it doesnt apply to a segment of the audience who may not care about getting a large collection of mostly meta irrelevant cards. I started playing arena last month, coming from a whole breadth of other TCGs and CCGs. I routinely hit Master in Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel and Legend in Hearthstone so these types of games are not new to me. I know that I'm the type of player who do not care for homebrews - what I want to get out of Arena is to learn about and play meta relevant decks in the Standard format. I also would not want to just sit around playing a deck I can afford with the new account resources (essentially only mono colored decks) and slowly open packs until i can build a deck I actually want to play. Doing so would actually cost me more money in the long run to get to the same point. These types of packages, while not great in terms of value for your money, are incredibly helpful for players like me who want a no hassle way of getting a top tier deck to climb with. You get exactly what you need without all the fluff. When i started playing last month, I climbed with Mono-Black Discard because it was the only deck i could afford that seemed interesting. I didnt particularly enjoy the deck all too much as it usually devolved into a top decking war with both players having no cards in hand - granted that youll usually have a Liliana of the Veil on board to push that advantage, but i just didnt enjoy that playstyle as much as I would have thought. I got to Platinum with that deck but started seeing my win rate go down a bit. When these decks were added to the store, I immediately bought the Golgari Midrange deck. It suited my playstyle way more and I was able to get to Mythic with a 70% win rate. Buying this deck had the added benefit of providing solid Golgari core to work with. Since you now have the mana base, you can rather inexpensively can go into various other directions with the deck using the wildcards you earn. All that being said, great video for a certain type of player! I appreciate what you do. I'm just hoping that more people see this comment as I think it provides another viewpoint into how other peope play the game.
For people like me who already have 146 decks saved (vs the 100 deck limit 😂 ) then crafting down to the 10 gem level then paying the 10 gems means I can add one more lovely slot to the collection. It’s very annoying that other sets don’t seem to count if they used Mixed up art (because the deck builder did it in the event) but it does make the above trick more likely to work if you wanted the slots My choice - Dimir Demons - needs two or three Blasphemous Edict and then it just melts through the BO1 meta (cut 1 duress and one GftThroat) the low percentage is that any good player is tweaking this deck, and the less good (ahem) are just playing it unchanged with their fingers crossed (The win rate stats also show how many people are playing the vanilla lists via the games played and those are pretty low for the more exciting but easily tweaked decks)
Before seeing the video I would say no.
Suggest Three Tree City in the Hare Apparent deck.
Birthday present to myself even though I hate witchcraft..... I do love games, cards and drafting.... So Planeswalker one time deal for me.and they will never get a dime after lol
They match based on cards too, I go months without facing certain cards. The one time I pick a deck I have with those cards I suddenly get matched against people who have those cards. The matching should be completely random. They should only have power categories they put you in, then it’s random
Lately I saw some cool combo deck on internet, so I made it (had almost all cards anyway so no big deal, I didnt lose kindney to buy wildcards). My results- 0 wins in like 10 games. But dude on internet had like 7 wins a row. Power of editing loses out, lmao. Idea of deck was really cool, but chances of it working irl really slim. So yea I watch these matches more for entertaining value, than actually good advice. If I want really strong deck- I go to some MTG site and check top5 decks- these one you need to win a lot. The rest may be interesting (like dragons, rats and whatnot) but dont expect to win often.
I just bought the daily deal MKM pack for 900gold, and it didn't increase the golden pack progress. Not sure if it's a bug or it's intended to work this way, still, I'm pretty disappointed now.
The store page will say which packs increase your golden pack progress. It's currently just the latest standard and alchemy releases, but will soon include other standard packs. That's one of the new changes covered in this video.
@@gameschooldadMTG Hey dad! All standard legal packs already grant you golden pack progress since Foundation introduction. However, there was a bug preventing golden pack progress from packs bought via dealy deal. That bug has been fixed yesterday and today I received the in-game mail notifying that they granted me back the lost progress (1 tick of golden pack progress).
@Gaggio23 that's good to know, glad they sorted it out!
Another combo with Nine-Lives Familiar is to get Twitching Doll under Soul Cauldron, put a 1+1+ counter on Nine-Lives Familiar, and sac it for a ton of tokens every turn. This only gets crazier with Doubling Season which doubles all the tokens and revival counters, I'm running it with All Will Be One & Insidious Roots for more craziness :)
I haven't used Twitching Doll much, but I see it now. Good combo!
I found out the hard way, that you can't have two copies of a legendary creature on the battlefield at the same time... Still won that game luckily, but didn't deserve it :D
