Definitely agree with this. You have to guard your wildcards. I don't pay any attention to titles and win rates as they are easy to inflate. Instead I watch creators who actively respond to comments and who talk honestly about how the deck performed at the end of the video. And I think it's also a good practice to get a decklist together and ask about it on some mtg forum to see if it's a consistent and strong deck before committing resources to it.

I agree with your 5 and have the same opinions about them mostly, but I'd add Sloth, Sonio and AshLizzle. Sloth is not afraid of owning up to mistakes. Sonio doesn't talk but his deck building and play choices are top notch and you can definitely infer to his thoughts. Ash is one of the best Best of 3 UA-camrs out there and really explains her plays and especially her sideboard choices.

Completely agree on NicolaiBolas. He improved his videos and plays a lot over the years. His draft guides each set are the best for a quick check on what to expect of the new set. He gives good explanations why he chooses cards while drafting. He doesn't always build the best deck, but he will say so if he does that fe to have fun or to try cards so "you dont have to."
Many comments mention Numot. He is definitely a very good player, but he doesn't explain anything of what he's doing and why.
Paul Cheon is the best explainer and player of the three. He will always try to build the best deck. The result is that he will often play the same (strongest) archtypes of a set over and over.

And mistakes he makes... Oopsies! He also lately got into the habit of using the same cards over and over - and to pursue the fastest wins possible at the cost of consistency. As someone who has been playing MTG since Alpha - I can tell you with absolute certainty (And I'm not going to name any names) that there are MTGA creators that DEFINITELY bought their way (Or were boosted in some fashion - I'm guessing they spent tons of money on the game and their cards Hard Carried them) into Mythic ranking. When you are watching them and they frequently (and I do mean frequently) don't understand interactions or are surprised by things working the way they do (Even by their own decks that they supposedly put together) there is something incredibly wrong. Especially when you tout yourself as a high-skill player. I can think of two right off the top of my head that stuck out like a sore thumb and I don't even typically watch too many channels.
Also. Thanks for being a real one.
Edit: Also, to anyone reading this - I also recommend Gaming Sloth. The best part about his gameplay is that he walks you through every decision he makes and why he is making them. (I personally watch because I like his personality; but if you're new (And to some degree even if you aren't) his gameplay could be incredibly helpful. He includes losses, talks about the shortcomings of his decks and even how he might change them going forward if he were to try and play them seriously.
    Just my two-cents!

    • @finnt4937
      @finnt4937 23 дні тому

@@muhammedhamdan9743 he builds a lot of decks. And he edits his videos. he never say "99999% winrate" or anything like it, or "this deck will get you to mythic in 2 seconds" . He is skilled, and builds a lot of fun and creative decks. BUT people assume, because he edits the videos and quite often he is winning, that these decks are all fkn insane. I read multiple comments like this, i rememeber the Werewolve deck in midnight hunt , he build one, it was just a fun tribal deck, it wasnt dogshit , but by no means a top tier deck. People bought it , and had like 45-50% winrate and were srsly mad in the comments. but again he NEVER says "these are sick top tier decks". I like Arstall, he goes trough the meta and describes very on point what every meta deck "wants to do" and what "generally beats it" , he is not a pro and he does not act like he is. But he is very easy to follow and if you are returning , like me , its very helpful to get a grasp on current meta AND he always gives data and legit winrates. I liked Day9 a lot, but he seems to have a big break from MTG right now. Arne Hushenbeth is very good, if you are into Bo3 and explorer , but he seems to be ona break aswell, he is a legit tournament player.

Just do your research and look for consistency. I find when I watch UA-camrs especially ones that are just starting I look for consistencies. If they are consistent and what they say and it matches up with other people's knowledge on the subject then it's more legit than if it doesn't. This isn't the know-how and there's other ways to test but it's just an example. But my dad always said, " do your research, challenge when necessary, come up with a conclusion based on evidence and research". I apply this to many aspects of my life 👍🏾

Qwazar77 (MTG Arena Original Decks) uses bitching, whining and complaining as part of his online persona. Most of the time it's heavily sarcastic, with a good deal of self-deprecating humor mixed in with self-aggrandizement. It's an unusual marketing strategy and has locked him out of getting invited to events and sponsorships by WotC, but it IS entertaining.

  • @danpearman270

Some good points and some good recommendations :) Personally, I quite like when content creators include some evidence for their win rate, but even then I tend to take it with a grain of salt - as you say it's a small sample size at best. I've heard CGB talk about winrates for videos and can see his point - ultimately he does have to pay attention to views and tailor to suit them. I really enjoy Swayze, but would tend not to craft his decks - not because there is anything wrong with them, but because I have found that I think too differently to him (and he is a far better player). I think sometimes that is something that viewers don't take into consideration; two different players with the same deck are likely to get different results.
Another couple of good channels I enjoy are Sloth (an entertaining mainly control player who tends to play in high mythic) and MegaMogwai, who has just returned to MTG after some years away and is coming up with some very interesting 'off the wall' decks.

I disagree about the negativity and rigging. It was recently shown that matchmaking is rigged and was discovered due to a bug and wotc admitted to manipulate starting hands it's very naive to think that they would be transparent about such things and would not do such things. To be fair I think every online game does that for profit not only wotc. Positivity creates this environment where such things then get put under the rug which I dislike a lot.
I really like your approach about learning something new. I have a tendency to pick such videos but I never thought too much about it but it's great to put it into words and doing it more actively. I also agree about the winrate being misleading and I like the people who include the longer term performance from a deck tracker or such for ranked.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  2 місяці тому +7

The existence of brawl matchmaking values and the hand smoothing algorithm have been public knowledge for years. The people making videos on them making them seem like big scandals are the ones I'm alluding to here. WotC are much more transparent than many people want you to think.
When I talk about positivity I don't mean ignoring facts, I mean discussing them in ways that doesn't make everything sound like a huge deal when it isn't. If there was a huge breaking news story, I wouldn't avoid it either.
      Thanks for commenting :)

@@gameschooldadMTG Oh that clears it up I think reporting on such things is important but that can be obviously more neutral or positive.
I come from some experiences with early access games that sometimes are in a very bad spot and the people there seem overly about being positive because it would hurt the game even if the game is a train wreck.
For example the monetization aspect on mtga some people will tell you everything is worth it because look you get an extra avatar. I like your more balanced approach where some offers are just not good and don't need a positive spin. Keep up the great work :)

When I am watching MTG content on YT for new deck ideas I like to consider if the games shown are 1) always on the play 2) never need a mulligan or 3) against non-meta decks. So many hyped-up decks I see in videos need the opponent to do so little that you're practically goldfishing. Can the content creator show the deck stabilizing after it's on the backfoot? If it's a BO3 list can they show which cards are in the flex spots, and how to use the sideboard to help the decks matchups? I find asking questions like this also force me to spend more time analyzing the deck rather than falling for the hype

I think this can extend to many other games. A huge thing i notice is that once someone is a youtuber or streamer for a game, they'll have kinda stop being a normal player. Its kinda natural as they spend the most time in the game, and there can be some added stress with the game bring a job. This can cause a huge amount of negatively being spread and pushing perspectives that the average player may never experience. I mostly use mtg youtube for fun deck ideas. If your goal is to climb, then there are tons of resources backed by deta to show what the best decks are. Even taking youtubers in good faith, you may still have many variables that can cause you to have different games than they do.

i would put at least part of the blame on WotC. If they didnt manipulate opening hands and more importantly deck matchups, good players would naturally sift to the top and you'd have a much better grasp on what decks are actually good. Furthermore if they utilized SBMM rather than EOMM, you would also have a more realistic view of how a deck performs. Anyone whos played long enough knows you can play one deck and run into nothing but mono red or boros, and the moment you switch to a deck built to beat those, you immediately stop seeing them. WotC have done some things that inherently make Arena anti fun and it makes it much easier for some youtubers to scam players

If you don't want the hand smoothing algorithm, there's BO3 games. If you don't want deck-weighted matchmaking, don't play casual. Good players do naturally sift to the top. Which good players do you think are somehow struggling? The matchmaking and hand smoothing algorithms are literally there to increase player enjoyment and reduce frustration. Not sure how you think they are trying to achieve the opposite?

@@gameschooldadMTG they don't achieve any of that. Artificially screwing with the game is not going to help anything. And you're way too smart to actually believe deck based matchmaking doesn't affect ranked play. The scenario I described happens far too often with far too many players in ranked for it to not. WotC denied the brawl mm fixing until the leak came out, can you honestly tell me you think that was the only thing they were bullshitting about?
I'm not saying the algorithms in place outright prevent good players from succeeding, but what they do is make it far more frustrating. When I play paper and I lose, I KNOW it was because I played badly or built my deck badly. When I lose in arena there's a more than fair shot that the algorithm decided I needed to be closer to a 50% win rate dude to the EOMM based MM rather than SBMM

On the rigging, anyone that plays Arena with any frequency knows the shuffler is busted. Ive been playing Magic since Beta and never have been screwed on mana one way or the other so many times. Drawing all 3 of a card in a row, etc. The only times I see synthesizer decks is when im playing monoblack, on and on. There is some goofy bs going on behind the scenes 1000%. I dont think being positive is a prerequisite either. Again playing enough Arena and getting shovel fed losses in a row is going to dampen anyones spirits so Id rather have someone be honest about than edit it out and pretend it never happened.

But given the fact I've played in paper for almost 30 years and MtGO for a long time and don't recall the land screw EVER being as common in either as it is on Arena is interesting. If we're saying it's truly random then I should have about equal times where I've just had perfect curve and gas every draw but that's just not the case. Now that we know the brawl queue is weighted it only seems logical that there is some kind of systems in place for other things going on in the background. I've seen some smaller UA-camrs test around with different decks and it certainly seems that way. Or there is also the claim that if you concede a bunch of games in a row it seems like you get pretty favorable matchups for a while after that. Now if it's malicious in nature I don't know, that's impossible to tell from our side obviously. But after interacting with this company for most of my life I no longer give them the benefit of the doubt.

@@Vonderbraffle the brawl deck weighting isn't new information, that's how they have always told us casual matchmaking works. Conceding repeatedly artificially lowers your MMR and should give you easier matches, it's also cheating the system and is pretty sad that people would actually need to stoop to that level to have a chance of winning. None of that would explain why on earth Wizards would want to intentionally program inflated mana problems into the game, whether that was aimed at certain people or randomly picking people. The hand smoothing algorithm is designed to literally reduce the instances of mana problems for the average player, but you think they put something else in place to make it worse?

All I ask is honesty and transparency but it seems transparency almost never happens.
Gaming in general is in a real bad place because 99% of UA-camrs and games is that they are doing it because they are being paid to promote said game.
FYI I do NOT watch MtBeast nor do I care about him at all.
I stopped playing MTG about 4 months ago the greed and speed of releasing new cards for sale was too much.So my return to the game lasted only about 4-5 months.
When comes to Covert Blue I care about him the same I care about Mr.beast IDC at all imo he is a bit of a cry baby.I got sick n tired of hearing him complain about mono red in literally every video.
SO I will use a hearthstone player a former MTG champion to give an example on how to make a good channel. What he does is make his own decks and changes it up everyday so he plays to have fun rather than try hard mode playing the best top rated tier decks in the game.

I don't know where you get the idea that almost all gaming UA-camrs are being paid directly to promote the game. Game companies don't randomly reach out to people and offer them money, people play the game and get paid by UA-cam for ads or have a paid membership.
And I think you might have misunderstood CGB. When he complains about mono red it's just because he enjoys games where decision making is important, not just dumping your hand in order every game, and he only exaggerates it because it's a funny persona.
