5 Day Camping & Gold Prospecting Trip | Goldfields WA
Join me on a short 5 day camping and gold prospecting trip, southeast of Mount Magnet, about 560kms north of Perth WA.
Time constraints only allowed me to be away for 5 days, but getting out in the bush and swinging my detector is something I'm always keen to do.
The weather was quite hot, reaching mid 30C each day, and the flies were their normal annoying selves....a fly net is a must.
Coming home without any yellow rocks is always a possibility, but doing our research helps to put us in the right locations for find gold.
I'm already planning my next trip, so look out for that one....as well as a couple of other videos in the pipeline, relating to modifications to the Navara.
If you're interested in the 'Gazza Pig', don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll forward your details to my friend Gary, who makes them.

Welcome to Part 7 of my Goodbye Camper, Hello Caravan series. In this video, I'll be installing the solar panels on the roof of the caravan, to complete the off-grid electrical system. Thanks to my twin brother Rusty from Rusty's Metal Cut Signs & Designs for the use of his plasma cutting table to make the solar panel mounting hole template. In this video, I'll be replacing the 2 AGM 100Ah deep cycle batteries in my canopy, with a slimline 160Ah lithium battery. Not only is there a weight saving of 26kg but I also get back some vital storage capacity that has been 'dead space', located above the existing AGM batteries. With this battery upgrade, we can run all the lights & fridges when camping, as well as having more than enough 12...

Come along with me as I head out to some live tenements outside Leonora, in WA's goldfields. I gained permission to be on these tenements and spent 12 days camping and gold prospecting, hoping to find my share of yellow rocks. This is the final video in this series of Goodbye Camper, Hello Caravan. The caravan is now licensed and I'll also give you a quick rundown on the work that I did to it, to get to this point. There are still a couple of things left to do, like installing the solar panels on the roof of the van, along with installing the grey water tank to catch the sink waste. • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 13 днів тому

      Hi Mark, from my understanding, the oil cooler bolts to the block and has water in and water out hose connections on the outside of the cooler. To delete the oil cooler, some sort of blanking plate would be needed to bolt to the block, but deleting it could be an option, but not one I'd even considered.

      If you go with a standard length axle, it will save problems down the track, should you need to replace it. You might have to look for rims with an offset to suit your installation...something else to consider when upgrading the axle, springs, etc.

    That's a pretty good camping setup you have there Rusty. I like the carrier for the quad on the drawbar on the caravan. The gold is pretty elusive at times eh. What you should carry, but don't, and everyone else seems to not carry either, is firewood. You could easily have bought enough for a five day trip from a firewood supplier. The reason why this is an issue for me, is the wood on the ground is part of the ecology/environment. It provides homes and shelter for small creatures, and when degrading it provides nutrients to plants. Collecting and burning wood is destructive. I hate seeing people with these massive bonfires that waste so much wood. Eventually, there will be a scarcity of wood with everyone collecting it. People go camping to enjoy it, but you are destroying what you came for.

We are buying a ute, we want it fitted with bullbar and front and rear racks, but they wont fit a front rack to the bull bar because something to do with the airbags sensor. So I am going to get a friend to fit me one, but I wanted to ask, how do you determine what weight the racks can handle? And is there some govt regulations regarding weights that can be loaded on to racks? Cheers

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures Місяць тому

      Hey Dingo, I'm pretty sure the roof racks on the Navara are rated at 80kg, so I figured the front rack is really only 'supporting' the 80kg, rather than having to take the whole weight. I built it for what I thought would be strong enough for this role, which I'm sure it is, but haven't looked into any govt regulations that relate to such a front rack.

    I heard to carry emu air horn, solar, works is like a reverse led light. They have diodes. Some times the diode breaks down. Carbon. There two diodes. One a bypass for series panel connection panels. The second inline for reverse protection. Because at night the panel becomes a led light in a spectrum you can not see. If need to replace, buy big power diodes

    Try scotch fillet and, in the end, very strong cheader cheese. I think plate split with heat in the middle and cold outside. Also, i watched doug stone rake area over the detected in WA. Have you seen the victoria gold hunters.

      Scotch fillet for special occasions, for sure. I've heard of prospecting raking the ground where nuggets have been found. I've watched a few episodes of Aussie Gold Hunters.

    Another question if you need to use your PLB in case of an emergency. Do you need to pay for the police rescue or plane or helicopter in the gold fields as I have had a heart attack in the past but feel I am a lot healthier now but you never knowwhat might happen. Car. Snake. Broken bone.ect . At 59yo i am no longer young but i would be going out alone. Cheers Andy hopeland perth.

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures Місяць тому

      As far as I'm aware, you're not required to pay for the cost of search and rescue efforts, if you set off your PLB. Much better to be found at the location of your PLB, should you get into trouble and need rescuing, than need help and not have any way of contacting someone, only for a full scale search be launched if nobody has heard from you for a while and nobody knowing exactly where you are.

      Hi Andrew, I'm using the Minelab GPX5000 detector with the 17" x 13" Nugget Finder Evolution coil. I also have the Minelab coils that come standard with this detector, as well as a 14" x 9" Nugget Finder Advantage and a 12" x 8" Nugget Finder Evolution coil. I'm not familiar with the ATPro or the AT Max detector but a quick google search suggests they're used for coin hunting, relics and even gold nuggets.

Yes i would love the minelab but unfortunately the ex got the house and I live off a Disability pension so its from pay to pay. But one day I hope to upgrade my detector to a proper gold detector. Good to also learn about all the safety tips thats appriciated too. I look forwatd to following your adventures and watching you find some big gold nuggets. I like to think positive. Its what gets me through my bad painful days. Cheers Andy. .

    Will your solar cable interfere with the annexe

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 2 місяці тому

      Hi Joe, you raise an interesting question. I don't have an annexe attached to the caravan, as I carry a 3m x 3m gazebo, so I don't have any issues with the cable. If I did add an annexe, I'd have to route the cables differently....either into the van on the other side, or space the annexe off the pop top roof, to clear the cables on that side of the van.

    When i bolt through tubing i weld in a sleeve (tube) to run the bolt through so it doesn't crush the tube ( a crush sleeve) I see this video was three years ago so maybe you already have this done. Roger USA

    Solid video Rusty very informative. Have you tested the battery to see how long it will run your 2 engels without charging it?

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 2 місяці тому

      Hi Jackson and thankyou for your kind words. No, I haven't tried to run the battery down to see how long it lasts, but with both Engels only drawing just over 5 amps when both are running, I imagine the battery would last several days. At present, I'm only running the 45L unit as a freezer and overnight, the battery is only dropping from 100% to about 91%, so maybe in a full day it would get down to 80%.

    Great work did you need to change your gas struts to accommodate the new panels

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 2 місяці тому

      Hi Armon, yes, the gas struts were buggered, so in replacing them, I went for the next stronger rated size, and they work a treat. I've not got my Starlink dish on a bracket attached to the cross arms, so I'm grateful for the stronger gas struts.

    hey what did you prime and paint your drawbar with? looks great, i need to redo mine, do you recommend a method to remove any surface rust thanks

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 2 місяці тому

      I used Fiddly Bits aerosol spray paint...Grey Primer, followed by Gloss Aluminium. For cleaning the surface of dirt and rust, etc. a wire cupped wheel on a grinder, or a flappy disc on a grinder will get your metal clean and ready for paint.

    The ENGEL MT-45 I purchased here in the U.S.A. in 2009 uses the Sawafuji Electric Co swingmotor compressor. Thanks for your video. Using two Engels makes perfect sense! when one wants both a fridge and a freezer at the same time. I was ponderin' the same thing; keeping my current fridge in the small caravan/trailer galley and the newer freezer (when I might buy one) inside the right rear door of the four-door truck. Safe travels to you!

    • @RustysOutbackAdventures
      @RustysOutbackAdventures 2 місяці тому

      Thankyou for your comments. I found the dual zone unit I had previously, struggled to maintain the fridge and freezer at their correct temperatures, when operating in hot conditions....hence the switch to 2 separate units. And I couldn't be happier with my decision. Safe travels to you, too.
